1. HRS Online Items Order System Launched
Human Resource Services announces a new online service for West Campus/HSC employees and administrative areas. The new HRS Items Order System enables individuals to order hard copy benefits, recruiting, and state appointments information that is not available electronically. Users will receive an e-mail verification of the request. Orders will be delivered via intercampus mail.

3. NY State Flexible Spending Account (FSA) - 2004 Open Enrollment
The NY STATE FSA 2004 Open Enrollment period is September 29, 2003, to November 12, 2003. This program helps STATE employees save money when paying for health or dependent care expenses. A paperless enrollment makes it easy for employees to apply online or through a toll-free number. Employees may obtain enrollment information or request an enrollment book online at

Employees currently enrolled in the FSA must re-enroll if they wish to continue their contributions in 2004. 5. Presidential Mini-Grants, President's Awards Programs -- Applications and Nominations Suspended for 2003-2004 Academic Year
In consideration of budget cuts levied in fiscal '02-'03, and in anticipation of possible cuts to come in fiscal '03-'04, the nomination and application processes for the Presidential Mini-Grant Programs for Departmental Diversity Initiatives and Innovative Teaching Projects, and the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Team Leadership, Diversity and Affirmative Action, and Classified Service are suspended for academic year '03-'04. It is hoped that these programs can be resumed, pending an improved budget outlook, for fiscal '04-'05.
However, all SUNY-based Chancellor's/President's Awards' application processes and the awarding of the Distinguished Professor titles will be continued for fiscal '03-'04, subject to SUNY approval.
Faculty/staff members seeking to collaborate with students on Diversity-related themes may inquire with the Office for Diversity and Affirmative Action (ex. 2-6280) regarding opportunities in the "Dialogues Across Differences" mini-grant competition for '03-'04.

3. The Essentials of Classification & Compensation (HTNW25)- Training for Hospital Employees in the HSC- 9/9/03 (9-11:30am) or 12/2/03 (2-4:30pm)
This workshop is designed to inform supervisors and managers of the various components of the Classification and Compensation unit within the Human Resources Department. Development of the comprehensive job/position descriptions, and the process used to classify positions based on the job/position description is examined. The steps involved in upgrading various positions due to increased responsibility are also reviewed as are the steps involving a market salary equity review. Dr. Ben Kirtman from the School of Computational Sciences, George Mason University, will present a seminar entitled, "The Interactive Ensemble Coupling Strategy" at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 3. The seminar will take place at the Marine Sciences Research Center, Endeavour Hall 120. Light refreshments will be served. 2. ACS Symposium: Synthetic Clean Fuels from Natural Gas and Coalbed Methane: 30 Years Since the First Oil Crisis.
The symposium, sponsored by the ACS Fuel and Petroleum Divisions, will be held during the 226th American Chemical Society Meeting in New York City from September 7-11, 2003. The symposium will cover synthesis of clean fuels and the future direction of the upcoming clean fuel synthesis technologies. The specific dates are: Tuesday, September 9 through September 11, 2003.

1. Bipolar Disorder in Youth: Cycling Through Childhood and Adolescence
The Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry will be sponsoring a conference on Bipolar Disorder in Youth. The conference will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2003 at the Wyndham Wind Watch Hotel in Hauppauge. Speakers will include: Gabrielle Carlson MD, Deborah Weisbrot MD, Kenneth Gadow PhD, David Miklowitz PhD and Melissa DelBello MD. Topics will include Bipolar Disorder and comorbidities ADHD, PDD, Tic Disorder, Family in Treatment and Neuropharmacological perspectives. The conference is designed for health professionals, school counselors, and social workers. The conference includes food and syllabus. CEU and CME credit will be offered. AA/EOE Compliant. 1. Golf Fund Raiser to Benefit Habitat for Humanity
A golf outing to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity will be held at the Mill Pond Golf Course in Medford on Wednesday, October 8th. 2. Stony Brook University Fall Blood Drive - 9/3
A blood drive is scheduled for Wednesday, September 3rd from 10:30am until 6:30pm in the Sports Complex (Small Pritchard Gym). All donors, attempted donors, and volunteers at the Drive will receive their choice of a short-sleeve Stony Brook Blood Drive T-shirt OR a Loew's movie ticket. Every summer there is a shortage of donors, this year the shortage is even greater due to the blackout of 2003. So bring a friend and come join us in this life-saving venture. The CSEA Local 1000 Women's Committee will be participating in the American Cancer Society's, "Making Strides" against Breast Cancer Walk. The walk will be held on Sunday, October 19, 2003 at Jones Beach State Park. You don't have to be a CSEA member to participate or to make a donation. 4. Seawolves Football Season Opener Just 19 Days Away! Howl Towl Giveaway and Fireworks Highlight September 13th Game
The Stony Brook football team opens the 2003 season on Saturday, September 13th when it hosts the Siena Saints at 6:00 p.m. inside Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. The first 5,00 fans receive a free Howl Towl and there will be a post game fireworks display to follow the game!

MusicBasics for Kids, Classes Forming for Kindergarten? 6th Graders
Experience music through rhythmic movement, ear-training, singing games, and improvisation. Taught by Dorothea Cook, a certified instructor of Dalcroze Eurhythmics, the class provides an excellent and joyful foundation for all aspects of a lifetime of music making. Three levels of classes meet on Saturday mornings in the Music Department starting on September 20 and running through June. The fee for the academic year is $600, payable quarterly.

The Empire Safety Council Accident Prevention Workshop emphasizing traffic safety awareness, which is proven to reduce both accidents and traffic citations. Learn to be a defensive driver and save 10% on your auto insurance (liability and collision) and reduce up to four points on your driving record. This is a two day class.

2. Are You Depressed? We Can Help!
The Department of Psychology at Stony Brook University is conducting up to a 6 month clinical trial involving medication with all participants and the addition of psychotherapy with some. Must be willing to travel up to two times a week for up to 3 months to the site and be available late afternoons/early evenings. If you have been feeling depressed (sad, down) most of the time for at least two years, you may be eligible to participate. All evaluations and treatments will be provided free of charge. 4. Select - Selenium And Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial.
SELECT is a research study being conducted to see if prostate cancer can be prevented.
Men who participate in this study will take two capsules a day. Some men will take only selenium or vitamin E and some will take both. Others will take a placebo (sugar capsule).
Participants will visit their local study site twice a year for at least seven years, and no more than twelve years. About 32,000 men will take part in this study.
Men free of prostate cancer who are age 55 or older may be able to take part in this study. African-American men may join at age 50 or older.
Taking part in SELECT may not help you directly. But we hope that the information learned from this study will benefit your sons, grandsons, and future generations.

6. Alzheimer's Disease Trial At SUNY Stony Brook
Study: A Trial of Simvastatin (Zocor) to Slow the Progression of Alzheimer's Disease Sponsored by: NIH through Alzheimer's Disease Cooperative Study

12. Opportunity To Participate In A Research Study On Autism At The GCRC, University Hospital. Free IQ Score And MRI Scan
The CODY Center is currently recruiting participants ages 6-18 with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder, who are not on medication, to participate in a neuroimaging study.
The children in the study will participate in three sessions, over a time frame of about three to six months, each session lasting about 60 minutes. During the first session and the third session, pictures of the brain will be taken using a device called MRI. There are no contrast or radioactive agents, sedation or other injections required for the study. During the second session the children in the study will meet with a neuropsychologist who will interview them and ask them to perform specific tasks, in order to evaluate their language and thinking process.

1. Division of Wellness & Chronic Illness - Integrative Asthma Care and Prevention
The Division of Wellness and Chronic will be conducting a three-part series on Integrative Asthma Care and Prevention for participants twelve years of age and older.
Participants are examined and evaluated individually to assess asthma severity and current treatment regimen.
Group discussions review state-of-the-art medical management; asthma triggers; prevention; and proper use of inhalers, spacers and peak flow meters. Participants receive information relating to how nutrition with whole foods can modify the symptoms of allergies and inflammation. Also discussed is the value and safety of some nutritional supplements and herbs used for allergies and asthma. Training in basic breathing exercises, yoga postures, self-hypnosis, meditation and guided imagery is included.
The series is scheduled for Wednesdays, September 10, 17, and 24 between 4:30 - 6:30 p.m., 33 Research Way, Stony Brook Technology Park. Most insurance plans accepted with appropriate co-payment for each visit.
