2. New York State Employees' Retirement System Information

The New York State Employees' Retirement, (ERS), announces their new Call Center toll-free telephone number, 1-866-805-0990. This toll- free number is great news for employees who may have important retirement-related questions but don't want to incur long-distance charges. When you use this number, you will connect to their interactive voice response (IVR) system which will answer a variety of important questions. For more information on the kinds of questions IVR answers, you may visit their website at http://www.osc.state.ny.us/retire/news/tollfree.htm. For information that cannot be accessed through IVR, customer service representatives are available every business day from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. by calling (518) 484-7736.

3. Old Library Catalog Is Retired

Beginning December 20, the Library's old STARS catalog (the telnet version with the black screen) will no longer be available. Bookmarks to this site will not function.
All catalog users will now use the new web-based catalog that debuted in the spring, and is available from the Library Home Page (www.stonybrook.edu/library/). The new STARS can be viewed with Windows 95 (or higher) using the Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 (or higher) or Netscape 4.7 (or higher) browser.

4. Computer Training Introduction to Windows

NCE 300.2 - 3 sessions - Fee: $180
This foundation course is required for all computer courses. This hands-on introduction is a computer "must" for the small business owner, job seeker or anyone interested in learning about the latest personal computer technology for home or business. Topics covered in this foundational class are an introduction to the Windows icon-based program including the use of the mouse, manipulating Windows, Explorer, file manager and applications. No prior computer knowledge is required. This course is a prerequisite for all computer courses.

This course, along with the other advanced Excel modules listed, focus on specific functions available in the program and is particularly useful for accountants and budget managers. Connections is a skill-building program that highlights the importance of customer service and positive communication skills in a campus setting.

9. Defensive Driving Program offered for UUP employees and their immediate family members.

A NYSUT sponsored Defensive Driving program is being offered on Monday and Tuesday, January 27 & 28, 2003 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM in the SAC Room 304, for all UUP employees and their immediate family members. (Attendance at both classes is required.)
Cost is $25 per person. Checks should be made payable to "NYSUT Benefit Trust" and delivered to the UUP office, 104 Old Chemistry, Z=3475. Office hours are Monday thru Friday, 9 am to 3 pm.

16. Call For Programs SBU Conference For Success

The Division of Campus Residences and Academic Advising are hosting a Conference for Success on January 20, 2003. We would like to request your assistance in putting together a variety of workshops that could benefit Stony Brook students who have not achieved their academic goals. Examples of great program ideas are: Navigating Academia, Balancing Academic and Personal Life, Critical Thinking, Goal Setting, Motivating Success, Note Taking or Writing an A paper.

17. Project Liberty provides free support services to persons affected by the events of September 11th.

Project Liberty provides free supportive counseling services to persons, families, and groups affected by the events of September 11, 2001. Individual counseling and support groups are available for anyone affected by the attacks or the aftermath. Presentations are available to departments or groups on post-traumatic stress, loss, or coping with loss during the holidays. 21. First Stony Brook Blood Drive of the New Year 2003

The first Stony Brook Blood Drive of the New Year 2003 is going to be held on January 8, 2003 from 7:00am to 6:00pm on the 3rd floor of the University Medical Center. Last year we were able to collect 150 pints of blood at the University Medical Center, beating the total number of 118 pints collected the previous year. With your consistent altruistic support, we would like to continue our trend of improving the total number of pints collected as the New Year starts. Donate Blood to help the local hospitals to fulfill their needs and above all to help save Lives!!

22. 5th Annual Institute for Medicine in Contemporary Society Writing Contest Guest Judge: David Watts, MD - Physician and Poet

All members of the SUNY community are welcome to enter, including students, faculty and staff from all departments on both sides of campus, and employees, staff, patients and families of patients of University Hospital.
Entries may take the form of poetry, short stories, or personal essays. Poetry entries should be no longer than fifty lines, and prose no more than 2000 words. There is no limit to the number of entries any one person may submit. Submissions may NOT have been previously published in print or electronic format and must NOT be under consideration for publication anywhere else.
There will be two first prizes of $500 - one for best poetry entry and one for best prose entry.

Adobe Illustrator is the preferred program of designers, graphic artists, technical illustrators and business professionals around the world. 27. Lipid Program Group Visits

Stony Brook University Hospital's Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of Family Medicine will be conducting four, two-hour group visits for patients with elevated lipids and cholesterol.
After an individual clinical evaluation, group visits will review the factors that contribute to increasing levels of lipids and insulin and how they can be decreased with whole foods. Evidence-based information on supplements, genetic influences and indications for anti-lipid medications and their side effects will be reviewed. The role of exercise and stress reduction will also be covered.
The series of four, two-hour sessions will be conducted on consecutive Wednesdays, January 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at 33 Research Way, Stony Brook Technology Park. Most insurance plans are accepted with appropriate co-pay for each visit. For those without coverage, the cost for the series is $150.00.

29. Men's Basketball Hosts Hartford Wednesday Night 7pm. Admission Just $1 If You Bring An Empty 20-oz Coke Product Bottle

The Stony Brook men's basketball team opens the home portion of America East play on Wednesday night, January 8 when they host Hartford at 7:00 p.m. inside the SBU Sports Complex.
Those wishing to attend the game can do so for just $1 when they present an empty 20-oz Coke product bottle (Coke, Diet, Sprite, Vanilla). That's a $5 value off the regular ticket price.

Summer Camp at Stony Brook June 30 - August 22, 2003
Stony Brook is pleased to present its fourth year of our fun-filled, action packed, computer savvy Summer Camp. The Camp combines a unique twist of educational activities and athletics for children between the ages of 5 -12. Tuition includes provision of a camp T-shirt, as well as a hot lunch and snack each day.

31. Diabetes and Periodontitis

Are you a Type 1 Insulin-Dependent Diabetic? Do you have Periodontal (Gum) Disease?
Periodontal (gum) disease has been shown to make it more difficult to control diabetes. We are conducting a study to determine whether Periodontal Treatment can reduce specific markers of infection/inflammation that may make it more difficult for you and your physician to control diabetes. Study participants will receive a free periodontal cleaning and payment of up to $300.00.

32. Free Treatment Available at Stony Brook for Those Who Lost A Family Member or Close Friend on Sept. 11, 2001

Are you or is someone you love having difficulty healing from the death of a loved one as a result of the September 11 Catastrophe?
If so, The Sudden Traumatic Loss Individual Treatment Program may be for you.
Who: Persons 18 years of age or older who have lost a spouse, partner, child, parent, sibling, or close friend or coworker as a result of 9/11.
What: * 20 one-to-one sessions. * Unique, state-of-the art treatment developed by experts in the fields of bereavement and trauma. This treatment is being researched and involves completing questionnaires.
Where: The State University of New York at Stony Brook, Pace University, and Columbia University.
Cost: The treatment will be offered free of charge for those who are accepted into the study.

33. Smoking and Periodontal (Gum) Disease

Are You a Smoker? Do you have Periodontal (Gum) Disease?
65 million people in the United States have some form of periodontal (gum) disease. Smoking is the greatest risk factor for periodontal disease, an often silent disease. Periodontal disease is a chronic, progressive inflammatory condition with no known cure. We are conducting a study to determine whether a tetracycline drug can reduce specific markers of inflammation, which can make it easier to control and treat periodontal disease.
People enrolled in the study will receive: Payment of up to $300.00. Free Dental Cleaning. Free Study Drug.

If you are a post-menopausal woman, not taking medications for osteoporosis, The School of Dental Medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook is conducting a clinical research project on a medication that may improve your gum disease and your osteopenia. If you are a woman with mild to moderate periodontal disease, early signs of osteoporosis and are between the ages of 45 and 70 you may qualify for this study. The Oral Biology and Pathology Department of the School of Dental Medicine, at Stony Brook University, is undertaking a study to evaluate a new toothpaste for effectiveness in reducing or eliminating the stain from your teeth.
Subjects should be at least 18 years old, in good health and should have basically good teeth, free from cavities and major restorations.

37. Summer 2003 Undergraduate Research Internship Program

The Center for Biotechnology is accepting applications for the Summer 2003 Undergraduate Research Internship Program. Internships will be established within the local biotechnology industry. Students will spend their summers, at a company, learning laboratory techniques and contributing to specific research projects. Students interested in careers in the biotechnology industry would be optimal candidates for selection as trainees under this program. Applicants will be selected from students beginning their junior or senior year who are majoring in any biology or chemistry department. Students in other life sciences departments, with equivalent but not exact qualifications as outlined in the application guidelines, are encouraged to contact Angeline Judex to discuss candidate eligibility.
