3. University Police Department Award Ceremony

The University Police Department will hold an Award Ceremony to recognize the men and women who serve and protect the Stony Brook Campus Community on Wednesday, December 17, 2003. 5. The Stony Brook University Student Health Service is offering the FluMist Vaccine FREE to Students, Faculty and Staff.

It's not too late to get your vaccine against influenza. While supplies last, the Student Health Service will be giving out FluMist Vaccine FREE to students, faculty and staff members of Stony Brook University. 1. Notice to Hospital and LISVH State Employees regarding the Health Insurance Option Transfer Period - Please Share this Notice.

The 2004 NYS Health Insurance rates have been approved and were mailed to enrollees' home mid-November. The deadline is December 12, 2003 to change from one health insurance plan to another, change to individual coverage, or cancel your coverage if you were not able to do so during the year due to the pre-tax program. A copy of the rates, the PS-404 form and the Choices Booklet, which describes the health insurance plans for 2004, can be obtained from the display rack outside the Benefits Office, Room 122, Level 3, HSC. To make a change you need to complete a Health Insurance Transaction form PS-404 and return it to your Benefits Office. For more information contact your Benefits Office or visit the website for the health insurance program

Resilience is the ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change. Complete the Resiliency Self-Assessment Questionnaire and find out where you score on the road to resiliency. 3. USA Track & Field - Long Island 2003-04 Indoor Schedule

USA Track & Field - Long Island has scheduled 3 events for the 2003-04 Indoor Track & Field Season. Held on 12/14, 1/2 & 2/8, they will all take place at Suffolk CC in Brentwood and are open to everyone of every ability. The first two contests (12/14 & 1/2) are all-comers meets and the last meet (2/8) is the Long Island Championship for Youth, Open & Masters individuals and teams. The level of competition available ranges from beginners and recreational athletes up to and including Olympians and World Record holders. 7. Free Concert On December 8, 2003, Melville Library Galleria, Noon

There is music in the air - a short concert of madrigals is to be presented. These choral pieces will be from the Elizabethan time period. The group of 8 singers (students, faculty & staff from Stony Brook and members of the community) will be conducted by Julia Zavadsky, a SB doctoral student and an adjunct faculty member at Temple University in Philadelphia.

1. Colds And Flu Workshop

The Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of Family Medicine is conducting a one and one-half hour lecture on Thursday, December 11th between 5:00 and 6:30 p.m. at their office located at 33 Research Way, East Setauket.
The lecture will focus on how to prevent colds and flu this winter and how to diminish their severity.
The use of vaccines and antiviral medications for the flu is discussed. Lifestyle practices, including nutrition, that promote health and shorten the duration of colds is also addressed.
With patients facing an overabundance of supplements and herbs marketed to treat and prevent colds and flu, the workshop offers research-based evaluations to assess safety and efficacy of the most common supplements and herbs.
The cost is $25.00 per person payable upon registration.

2. Osteoporosis: An Integrative Approach To Prevention And Management

A series of three group visits concentrates on the prevention and management of osteoporosis.
Participants are examined and evaluated individually to assess their risk of fracture and to determine if the bone loss management is optimal. The group visits review osteoporosis in an integrative, holistic fashion with focus on measures that may be added to conventional treatment such as nutrition with whole foods, supplements, yoga and exercise to improve hip and spine bone density. Conventional monitoring techniques and medical interventions with hormone replacement therapy and drugs are thoroughly reviewed and discussed
The three-part series will be held at 33 Research Way in Stony Brook Technology Park on Wednesdays, December 3, 10, 17 between 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. Most insurance plans accepted with appropriate co-payment for each visit.

1. Long Island Database Project - Volunteers Needed

The Long Island Cancer Center is creating a database of blood samples and clinical information to help researchers better understand why some individuals develop breast and prostate cancer while others do not.
Women and men are eligible to participate if they were diagnosed with breast or prostate cancer OR have never been diagnosed with cancer, are 18 years of age or older, are a current Long Island resident and have lived on Long Island for at least 5 years.

2. Looking for individuals with depression for non-treatment research study

HAVE YOU BEEN FEELING DEPRESSED?
While brief periods of feeling "blue" in reaction to stress are common, major depression includes several of the symptoms below, nearly every day for more than two weeks.
- Difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or sleeping too much
- Fatigue or lack of energy
- Loss of interest or pleasure in activities
- Feeling down, sad, or hopeless
- Feeling like you were letting yourself or family down
- Trouble concentrating
If you feel that you may have major depression, you may be eligible for a new non-treatment study being conducted at Stony Brook University that's looking at the relation between brain activity and emotion.
Participants must be between the ages of 25 and 75 and be right handed.
The study is harmless and qualified participants will receive $150.00.

3. Are You Depressed? We Can Help!

The Department of Psychology at Stony Brook University is conducting up to a 6 month clinical trial involving medication with all participants and the addition of psychotherapy with some. Must be willing to travel up to two times a week for up to 3 months to the site and be available late afternoons/early evenings. If you have been feeling depressed (sad, down) most of the time for at least two years, you may be eligible to participate. All evaluations and treatments will be provided free of charge. Child Care on the campus of Stony Brook University has evolved, grown and moved several times since the small parent co-ops of the 1960?s. 3. Summer Sessions Course Preview Now Available Online

To view a list of the courses scheduled for Summer 2004, visit the Summer Sessions Website at www.stonybrook.edu/summer. The final schedule will be posted in January 2004. Almost 500 undergraduate and graduate courses are scheduled in Summer 2004, most on campus but a number of courses at Stony Brook Manhattan. Both day and evening classes are scheduled on campus in Sessions I and II.

4. Summer 2004 Undergraduate Research Internship Program

The Center for Biotechnology is accepting applications for Summer 2004 Undergraduate Research Internship Program. Internships will be established within the local biotechnology industry. Students will spend their summers, at a company, learning laboratory techniques and contributing to specific research projects. Students interested in careers in the biotechnology industry would be optimal candidates for selection as trainees under this program. Applicants will be selected from students beginning their junior or senior year who are majoring in any biology or chemistry department. Students in other life sciences departments, with equivalent but not exact qualifications as outlined in the application guidelines, are encouraged to contact Angeline Judex to discuss candidate eligibility.
