2. Update on Laser Eye Surgery at Stony Brook
The response to the establishment of a LASER REFRACTIVE SURGERY
service at Stony Brook Ophthalmology continues to be strong.
Two weeks ago, a new phone number ((631) 444-4996) dedicated
solely to refractive surgery was created.
Our refractive surgery evaluations typically are scheduled on
Friday afternoons. In an effort to further 'stream-line' the
evaluation process, and to accommodate our patients' busy
schedules, we have now added additional time for consultations on
Tuesday afternoons.
As always, a special discounted rate will be extended to all
Stony Brook students, faculty, staff, and their immediate family
members.
If you would like to learn more about laser eye surgery or to
schedule a FREE & INFORMATIVE consultation with our laser vision
specialists, call (631) 444-4996.

4. Help Build the Habitat for Humanity Stony Brook House
Homelessness is on the rise on Long Island, but you can help
break the cycle of poverty for a deserving family. Join our
campus community and Habitat for Humanity as we work
together to make a North Bellport family's dream of home
ownership come true.
It costs roughly $60,000 in materials and services to build a
house on Long Island. Stony Brook has committed to raising
$40,000; the balance is funded through Habitat for Humanity.
Every department on campus and a variety of student groups are
making plans to raise funds for their designated part of the
house.
So, take the Habitat Challenge calling for communities to
eliminate substandard housing in their area within this
generation. Support the Stony Brook House fundraising events
and help us reach our goal. For more information, contact your
department coordinator, or visit our web site on the YOCL page
at www.stonybrook.edu.

'lunch & learn' seminar, which will be held on Friday April 12th
(place & time to be determined).

setting. Most importantly, you will have an opportunity to

LASIK treatment itself as it 'shadows' one of our patients
through the 'LASIK experience' at Stony Brook.
We want to accommodate as many people as possible who would like
to have lunch with us and learn about laser eye surgery.
Therefore, we ask that if you are interested, please RSVP with

27. Living World Public Lecture Series
Sponsored by Ecology and Evolution Department
Professor Douglas J. Futuyma, Distinguished SUNY Professor, will
speak on "Why We Need to Teach Evolution".
When: Friday, March 15, 2002
Where: Earth & Space Sciences Lecture Hall 001
Time: 7:30 PM
Even though evolution has been considered a fact by most
biologists for over a century, it is considered controversial by
a large fraction of the American public. Partly on this acount,
the subject is often neglected or avoided in educational
curricula. However, evolution is as thoroughly supported as any
principle in science. Moreover, it is an essential framework for
understanding almost all of biology, and plays increasingly
important roles in health sciences, food production, pest
management, and many other applications. Professor Futuyma will
describe some of the support for evolution, illustrate its
importance in human affairs, and argue that a scientifically
literate society must understand the principles and applications
of evolution.
