1. New York State NYPERL (Long-Term Care Insurance) Open Enrollment Deadline Extended to June 14
The open enrollment period for NYPERL (Long-Term Care Insurance), which was scheduled to end May 31, has been extended to June 14, 2002. Applications submitted under open enrollment to the insurance carrier, MedAmerica, must be dated and postmarked no later than June 14, 2002. 2. Study of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
If you are 18-60 years of age and have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), you are invited to participate in a study funded by the National Institute of Health to learn about the relationships between activity, fatigue, and stress in CFS. Medical evaluation is free of charge. Participants will be paid. For further information, please call Fred Friedberg, PhD (631) 632-8252.

3. Blood Drive In June - For Students, Faculty And Staff
*Stony Brook Cares* It's time for blood drive again. We urge the Stony Brook University community to make a difference by donating blood drive at our upcoming Blood Drive on June 10 and 17. Blood drive is like a parachute. If it's not there when you need it, you probably wont need it again. The blood you donate will directly aid our hospitals, including our own University Hospital. Please come and donate.

4. Women's Heart Health Series
The Stony Brook Heart Center is presenting a lunchtime symposium focusing on heart disease in women. The symposium, which is free of charge, begins on Thursday June 13th from12:00pm to 1:00pm HSC level 3, lecture hall 6. Lunch will be provided and pre-registration is required. The series will continue on Thursday July 11th and Thursday August 15. To register or find out more information call 444-7415.

Beginning the week of June 3rd. 12:00P.M. Monday's Body Sculpting Class 12:00P.M. Wednesday's and Friday's Step Aerobics For the 12:00P.M. classes you can purchase a punch card. Cards are available for as lows as $15.00 for 9 classes, $25.00 for 18 classes, $40.00 for 27 classes and $50.00 for 35 classes. 6. Nominations Now Being Accepted for the Distinguished Alumni Awards
Know an alum who deserves to be recognized for his or her outstanding achievements? Nominate them for the Distinguished Alumni Awards! A form can be accessed at www.alumni.sunysb.edu. Categories include Public Service, University Service, and overall achievement. The Awards Dinner will be held on November 21st at The Vanderbilt in Plainview. 7. Issues of Voice and Discourse in the Teaching of Writing....a One-Day Conference - October 5, 2002
"Issues of Voice and Discourse in Teaching College Writing" will be the theme of a one-day conference sponsored by the Program in Writing and Rhetoric at Stony Brook University, to be held Saturday, October 5, 2002, 9 AM to 5 PM. The keynote speaker will be Peter Elbow. Respondents will be Sondra Perl, Louise Wetherbee Phelps, and Ira Shor.
We invite proposals for panel presentations, individual presentations, or interactive workshops. Suggested topics include the issue of student development of his/her voice in college writing, the challenge of managing competing voices in the researched essay, the use of alternative discourses in representing intellectual work, and the impact of technology on students' texts. The deadline for proposals is June 28, 2002.

8. Wellness Center presents Free Seminar in Kung Fu
The Wellness Center is offering a FREE seminar on Kung Fu. Come to the Exercise Room in the Sports Complex on Wednesday, June 12th at 5:15pm to learn more about Choy-Li-Fut a traditional style of Kung Fu. Sifu Chang from the Chinese Martial Arts and Health Center located in Miller Place will present on Southern China's most complete and popular style of Kung Foo. Choy-Li-Fut is a southern martial art that combines movements for upper and lower body. He will discuss the physical and psychological benefits of practicing Choy-Li-Fut. 9. Summer Sessions Office is Moving
to Room 104 Administration Bldg.(between the Admissions Office reception area and the Campus Card Office) during the week of June 17 and will offer only limited services that week. It will be open for business as usual on Monday, June 24. Office hours are M-F,9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The telephone number will remain 632-7790.

10. Looking For A Positive And Convenient Summer Experience For Your Kindergarten, 1st Or 2nd Grader? SBCCSI's On Campus Program.
Stony Brook Child Care Services (SBCCSI) is offering a summer program for children who have completed kindergarten, first and second grade. The lead teacher is a certified NYS elementary school teacher and will offer a balance of individual / group, indoor/ outdoor, active / quiet play, art, music, science, language, math activities and field trips celebrating summer.
The program runs Monday thru Friday from 8 am - 6pm. Parents can sign up for 6,7,8,9 or 10 weeks. The choice of which weeks is up to parents. Priority and a 10% discount is given to University, Hospital and HSC families. For more information call 632 6930.

The Summer Camp at Stony Brook is back for its third exciting year. The Camp combines a unique twist of educational activities and athletics for children between the ages of 5 -12. 13. Ergonomics for Therapists Workshop
Ergonomics for Therapists Workshop with Karen Jacobs. June 20, 2002
Karen Jacobs, EDd, OTR/L, CPE, FAOTA, Clinical Associate Professor, is an internationally recognized occupational therapist and certified professional ergonomist, well known for her work in ergonomics and health care marketing. She is currently teaching in the Occupational Therapy program, Boston University. She is the past President and Vice President of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) and founding editor of the inter-disciplinary and international journal WORK. A Journal of Prevention, Assessment and Rehabilitation. Her current projects include: violence prevention in the schools, ergonomic computing for children, and grant-funded research on safety and health for dentists. She also hosts a weekly Cable TV show, Life Style by Design.

14. Hillel Laboratory School Enrollment Open For 2002-03
The Hillel Foundation's Jewish Laboratory School is now taking applications from faculty and staff families for the 2002-2003 school year. The Lab School is a Sunday morning Jewish enrichment program that teaches Hebrew, Bible, Jewish holidays, customs, history, and culture to children ages 6 and up. The school has a professional staff of experienced teachers and also involves parents and families in fun and interesting ways through the Stony Brook Havurah. 15. Meet the Oncology Nurse from The Stony Brook Hospital's Cancer Helpline
The Oncology Nurse from Stony Brook University Hospital's Cancer Helpline will be available in person to answer cancer questions at The Community Resource Center - located in the Stony Brook Village on 6/12/02 from 12:00 noon till 2:00-PM. This is an opportunity to have cancer questions answered and to obtain cancer related information.

16. Laser Eye Sugery Seminar at Stony Brook
Stony Brook Ophthalmology will be offering two free educational seminars regarding laser vision correction. These sessions will be held at Tech Park on June 18th & June 26th starting at 7PM.
Dr. Marc Dinowitz, who is the cornea and refractive eye surgeon in the Dept of Ophthalmology, will be conducting these informal seminars.
