2. Become an Adult Literacy Volunteer Tutor!

There are many adults in the Suffolk County area who need basic
reading, writing, and/or conversational English language skills.
Would you like to become a tutor and make a huge difference in
someone's quality of life. Knowledge of a foreign language is not
required. A high school diploma is required to become a
volunteer. Volunteer tutors develop their skills by attending a
24 hour workshop over the course of eight (8) weeks. The next
workshop begins January 30th on Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 9:00
p.m. at the Longwood Public Library (Middle Island, NY). For more

County) at (631) 286-1649 or www.suffolkliteracy.org. Tell them

8. THE LIBRARY'S NEW ONLINE CATALOG

The West Campus University Library and all its branches have
converted STARS, its online catalog, to a new, web-based system.
The online catalog has a completely different look, allows users
to search for items in new ways, and offers seamless hyperlinking
at many reference points to assist in sorting and storing
searches. Users can now renew or recall books online, search for
materials by language, location and format, and review their own
current library loan history. Many electronic databases found by
searching STARS will be linked directly to the catalog, though
off-campus access to those databases is restricted to users with
SUSB ID. Brochures and classes are available to introduce users
to the new catalog. Call Janet Clarke at 632-1217.
