1. Distinguished Teaching and Service Professorship Nominations Due September 27

REMINDER: If you intend to file a nomination for a colleague for either the SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor or SUNY Distinguished Service Professor title by the November 18th deadline, you need to submit only the SINGLE PAGE NOMINATION FORM by SEPTEMBER 27 to Regina Funaro, Provost's Office, 407 Administration Building, Z=1401. Ms. Funaro can be reached at ex. 2-7016.This will enable the Provost's office to better facilitate the nomination process. Subsequently, the full nomination file with supporting documentation is due November 18, 2002. The form and the entire nomination booklet is only available on the web at www.sunysb.edu/pres. No hard copy booklets or forms will be mailed for this year's award nominations.

2. Salute To Stony Brook - Adopt a Rubber Duck

Salute to Stony Brook will be held on Thursday, September 19, 2002. One of the festivities planned is Rubber Duck Races down the brook located next to the Administration Building. We have 500 Rubber Ducks ready for Adoption, if interested in adopting a duck e-mail: campusrecreation@notes.cc.sunysb.edu
Please include your campus address in the e-mail so we may mail you your adoption papers. Once the races are finished you can pick-up your duck at the Campus Recreation Duck Race Tent or later that week.

Homelessness is on the rise on Long Island, but you can help break the cycle of poverty for a deserving family. 17. The Adult Literacy Center at Stony Brook - Needs you!

The Adult Literacy Center at Stony Brook University is a partnership between the Literacy Volunteers of America-Suffolk County, Inc.and Stony Brook University. The Center is designed to serve the employees, students, their families, stakeholders, and other constituents.
The Adult Literacy Center focuses on the university primary missions of teaching, research, and service. Services include basic literacy tutoring for the low-level reader (below 6th grade) and for those in need of conversational English skills.
The Adult Literacy Center at Stony Brook University is in need of volunteers to help individuals within our community learn to read and write and/or speak conversational English. Tutor Training Workshops will be offered at libraries throughout the county starting in September 2002 and on campus Spring, 2003. 18. Employee Assistance Program Lunchtime Learning - LUNCH PROVIDED

HEALTHY BOUNDARIES BETWEEN PARENTS AND TEENS
Having healthy boundaries means we are able to connect, in positive ways, what we want as a parent with what the teenager wants. In doing so, we build mutual consideration and respect. This workshop will cover when to use boundaries, the characteristics of healthy boundaries, tips and strategies to build a solid relationship with your teenager. Project Liberty provides free supportive counseling services to persons, families, and groups affected by the events of September 11th. Individual counseling and support groups are available for anyone affected by the attacks and the aftermath. 20. Workshop on Inner Leadership for Personal and Corporate lives.

Russel J. von Frank II of TEC (Dedicated to Enhancing the Lives of CEO's) will be speaking on Inner Leadership at the next Business Friends of Hillel meeting on September 24th at 6:30 PM in Melville. 21. Free concert at University Art Gallery

The contemporary music ensemble "NeitherMusic" will perform at the University Art Gallery in the Staller Center on Monday, Sept. 23, from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. The concert will feature world and NY premieres, recently composed works, and a piece by American composer Frederic Rzewski. The concert will be performed during the drop-in workshop "Stony Brook Remembers 9/11: Celebrating America's Freedoms." Visitors may create works of art while listening to the NeitherMusic ensemble.
The ensemble consists of Suzanne Farrin, Jason Trueting, Lawson White, and Sebastian Zubieta. The group was founded in 2001 as a collective dedicated to the creation and performance of new works.

22. "Stony Brook Remembers 9/11: Celebrating America's Freedoms" at University Art Gallery in Staller Center

Drop-in workshop from Sept. 3 - 26, allows visitors to create works that will be the focal point of this workshop project. Visitors will be able to draw, paint, sculpt and write. This project was made possible by grants from Wal-Mart Foundation and the Friends of the Staller Center. Additional support received from Greatland Target, Island School and Art Supply, and Goldberg & Rodler Landscape Designs.

24. Department of Campus Recreation Tennis Tournament

On Saturday, Sept. 28 the Department of Campus Recreation will be organizing a Tennis Tournament (Single's Only) from 12:00pm - 3:00pm on the Physical Education Tennis Courts located near the Stadium parking lot. The tournament will be broken down into beginner, intermediate and advance levels with separate divisions for men and women. 31. Of Interest to Quilters

The current drop-in project (Stony Brook Remembers 9/11: Celebrating America's Freedoms) at the University Art Gallery in the Staller Center includes an area for quilting. Fabrics and tools are provided. After this project ends on Sept. 26, the quilts made during the project will be donated to an organization in Bellport that delivers quilts to the University Hospital Child Life Program as well as to a women's shelter.

34. Colloquium of Department of Physics and Astronomy by Chen Ning Yang

On Tuesday, Sept. 17, 4:15 PM, Stony Brook's Einstein Professor Emeritus and Nobelist, Chen Ning Yang, will present the Colloquium of the Department of Physics and Astronomy. His subject will be "Thematic Melodies of 20th Century Theoretical Physics: Quantization, Symmetry and Phase Factor". This talk, which will be accessible to a broad audience, will discuss the past century's landmarks in the development of physics.
The location will be Ballroom A of the Student Activities Center. This is not the usual room, due to the nonstandard schedule of classes on Sept. 17.

Industrial pollution made the river run red, purple, and other noxious colors. Thanks to economic change and an aggressive environmental movement, the Hudson is alive and well. Here is the story of the pollution and cleanup of the most metal-polluted cove in the world and the environmental turnaround that followed.

37. Little Angel Fund Annual Golf Outing -- Golfers And Volunteers Needed

The Little Angel Fund is sponsoring its ANNUAL GOLF OUTING on Monday, September 23, 2002 at Cherry Creek Golf Links in Riverhead. Registration at 11:00, BBQ lunch at 11:30, Putting Contest at 12:00, Shot Gun at 1:00, Beverage Cart & Snacks, Coctail Hour at 6:30, Buffet Dinner with beer, wine and soda at 7:30. The Little Angel Fund is a tax-exempt, non-profit organization. Our goal is to make life a little easier for the premature and/or seriously ill infants while in the NICU and to offer help and support for the bereaved. 39. CSEA Worker Training Classes

The School of Health Technology and Management is pleased to announce it's new Fall Course offerings to CSEA members.
During the week of September 16, we will offer Introduction to Communication, Introduction to Computing II,Risk Factors and Intervention Part II, and Stress Management Part I, If you are interested in attending and have not received a registration form, please call 4-2252. If you are a post-menopausal woman, not taking medications for osteoporosis, The School of Dental Medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook is conducting a clinical research project on a medication that may improve your gum disease and your osteopenia. If you are a woman with mild to moderate periodontal disease, early signs of osteoporosis and are between the ages of 45 and 70 you may qualify for this study. 48. Osteoporosis Prevention And Management

The Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of Family Medicine is offering a series of three group visits for the prevention and management of osteoporosis. Participants will be evaluated individually in order to assess osteoporosis severity.
The groups will also discuss osteoporosis in an integrative, holistic fashion with focus on measures that may be added to conventional treatment such as nutrition with whole foods, supplements, yoga, and exercises to improve hip and spine bone density. Conventional monitoring techniques and medical intervention with hormone replacement therapy and drugs will be covered as well.
The series of three, two-hour sessions will be conducted on consecutive Wednesdays, October 2nd, 9th and 16th between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. at 33 Research Way, Stony Brook Technology Park.

50. Diabetes and Periodontitis

Are you a Type 1 Insulin-Dependent Diabetic? Do you have Periodontal (Gum) Disease?
Periodontal (gum) disease has been shown to make it more difficult to control diabetes. We are conducting a study to determine whether Periodontal Treatment can reduce specific markers of infection/inflammation that may make it more difficult for you and your physician to control diabetes. Study participants will receive a free periodontal cleaning and payment of up to $300.00.
