2. Computer Training Introduction to Windows

NCE 300.2 - 3 sessions - Fee: $180
This foundation course is required for all computer courses. This hands-on introduction is a computer "must" for the small business owner, job seeker or anyone interested in learning about the latest personal computer technology for home or business. Topics covered in this foundational class are an introduction to the Windows icon-based program including the use of the mouse, manipulating Windows, Explorer, file manager and applications. No prior computer knowledge is required. This course is a prerequisite for all computer courses.

4. Computer Training Advanced Excel Module II

NCE 314.2 - 2 sessions - Fee: $105
This course, along with the other advanced Excel modules listed, focus on specific functions available in the program and is particularly useful for accountants and budget managers. This advanced topics course covers multiple file management, linking, consolidating, auto-filter, pivot table and macros.

This beginner's class is designed for anyone with little or no online experience. It offers a hands-on tour of the World Wide Web while providing an explanation of what the Internet is, how to get connected, and how to use it to find the information you need.

6. Blueprint Reading/Schematics Open to CSEA Members in the Operational Bargaining Unit, Grades 9-14 (Presented by NYS/CSEA Labor Management Committee)

In this 2-Day workshop, participants will learn how to read specifications on sets of plans and schematic drawings. They will also learn how a design is converted into a blueprint and how details are transferred, along with how to use scales, symbols, and isometric, oblique and orthographic projections. Participants will also gain an understanding of technical, architectural, electric, mechanical and hydraulic drawings.

7. Connections Customer Service Training (Human Resource Services, Training & Organizational Development)

Connections is a skill-building program that highlights the importance of customer service and positive communication skills in a campus setting.

9. Defensive Driving Program offered for UUP employees and their immediate family members.

A NYSUT sponsored Defensive Driving program is being offered on Monday and Tuesday, January 27 & 28, 2003 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM in the SAC Room 304, for all UUP employees and their immediate family members. (Attendance at both classes is required.)
Cost is $25 per person. Checks should be made payable to "NYSUT Benefit Trust" and delivered to the UUP office, 104 Old Chemistry, Z=3475. Office hours are Monday thru Friday, 9 am to 3 pm.

10. University Post Office At Sac Closing

The Sac Post Office will be closed for renovations from 12/23/02 until 01/13/03. Post Office will re-open on Tuesday, 1/14/03 from 10:00 A.M. - 2:00 P.M. for inter-session. Regular hours will resume on Wednesday, 01/22/03 from 9A.M. - 3:00 PM.

11. New York State TEACHERS' Retirement System - Pre-Retirement Planning Seminars

NYS TEACHERS' Retirement System has announced its next series of statewide pre-retirement planning seminars for winter/spring 2003. The seminars are open to active members age 45 and older. 12. Call For Programs SBU Conference For Success

The Division of Campus Residences and Academic Advising are hosting a Conference for Success on January 20, 2003. We would like to request your assistance in putting together a variety of workshops that could benefit Stony Brook students who have not achieved their academic goals. Examples of great program ideas are: Navigating Academia, Balancing Academic and Personal Life, Critical Thinking, Goal Setting, Motivating Success, Note Taking or Writing an A paper.

13. Project Liberty provides free support services to persons affected by the events of September 11th.

Project Liberty provides free supportive counseling services to persons, families, and groups affected by the events of September 11, 2001. Individual counseling and support groups are available for anyone affected by the attacks or the aftermath. Presentations are available to departments or groups on post-traumatic stress, loss, or coping with loss during the holidays. Project Liberty is funded by FEMA and the Center for Mental Health Services. All services are FREE and strictly confidential.

14. Adorable Kittens/Young Cats Available For Adoption!

The USB Cat Network works to humanely trap, neuter, vaccinate, and care for the many feral cats that live on campus. Currently, we have a small number of kittens/young cats caputured on campus that are friendly and available to good homes. Please contact Nancy Franklin (nancy.franklin@sunysb.edu).

15. Lipid Program Group Visits

Stony Brook University Hospital's Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of Family Medicine will be conducting four, two-hour group visits for patients with elevated lipids and cholesterol.
After an individual clinical evaluation, group visits will review the factors that contribute to increasing levels of lipids and insulin and how they can be decreased with whole foods. Evidence-based information on supplements, genetic influences and indications for anti-lipid medications and their side effects will be reviewed. The role of exercise and stress reduction will also be covered.
The series of four, two-hour sessions will be conducted on consecutive Wednesdays, January 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at 33 Research Way, Stony Brook Technology Park.
Most insurance plans are accepted with appropriate co-pay for each visit. For those without coverage, the cost for the series is $150.00.

16. Volunteers Needed for Scooping Out Sucess

Student Activities is looking for volunteers for the traditional Scooping Out Success Program. Volunteers will be scooping out ice cream and toppings to students. This program provides opportunities for students to socialize with faculty and staff outside of the classroom. 19. Exhibit Announcement: This is woman's hour...: The Life of Mary Baker Eddy.

Date: November 1, 2002 - December 31, 2002 Location: Library Galleria
The Special Collections Department is hosting the nationally acclaimed Mary Baker Eddy exhibit, "This is woman's hour...." from November 1 - December 31. Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910) was an influential American author, activist, and teacher, noted for her groundbreaking ideas about women's rights, spirituality, and health. In 1908 she launched The Christian Science Monitor, a leading international newspaper which has received seven Pulitzer Prizes.
The exhibit was designed by The Writings of Mary Baker Eddy in collaboration with the Women's Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls, New York (a National Park Service facility). This touring version has traveled to numerous states and has been seen by over 1.5 million visitors at public libraries, university libraries, and state capital buildings. The exhibit features videos, interactive listening stations, news clippings, and photographs.

27. Diabetes and Periodontitis

Are you a Type 1 Insulin-Dependent Diabetic? Do you have Periodontal (Gum) Disease?
Periodontal (gum) disease has been shown to make it more difficult to control diabetes. We are conducting a study to determine whether Periodontal Treatment can reduce specific markers of infection/inflammation that may make it more difficult for you and your physician to control diabetes. Study participants will receive a free periodontal cleaning and payment of up to $300.00.

28. Free Treatment Available at Stony Brook for Those Who Lost A Family Member or Close Friend on Sept. 11, 2001

Are you or is someone you love having difficulty healing from the death of a loved one as a result of the September 11 Catastrophe?
If so, The Sudden Traumatic Loss Individual Treatment Program may be for you.
Who: Persons 18 years of age or older who have lost a spouse, partner, child, parent, sibling, or close friend or coworker as a result of 9/11.
What: * 20 one-to-one sessions.
* Unique, state-of-the art treatment developed by experts in the fields of bereavement and trauma. This treatment is being researched and involves completing questionnaires.
Where: The State University of New York at Stony Brook, Pace University, and Columbia University.
Cost: The treatment will be offered free of charge for those who are accepted into the study.

29. Smoking and Periodontal (Gum) Disease

Are You a Smoker? Do you have Periodontal (Gum) Disease?
65 million people in the United States have some form of periodontal (gum) disease. Smoking is the greatest risk factor for periodontal disease, an often silent disease. Periodontal disease is a chronic, progressive inflammatory condition with no known cure. We are conducting a study to determine whether a tetracycline drug can reduce specific markers of inflammation, which can make it easier to control and treat periodontal disease.
People enrolled in the study will receive: Payment of up to $300.00. Free Dental Cleaning. Free Study Drug.

32. Summer 2003 Undergraduate Research Internship Program

The Center for Biotechnology is accepting applications for the Summer 2003 Undergraduate Research Internship Program. Internships will be established within the local biotechnology industry. Students will spend their summers, at a company, learning laboratory techniques and contributing to specific research projects. Students interested in careers in the biotechnology industry would be optimal candidates for selection as trainees under this program. Applicants will be selected from students beginning their junior or senior year who are majoring in any biology or chemistry department. Students in other life sciences departments, with equivalent but not exact qualifications as outlined in the application guidelines, are encouraged to contact Angeline Judex to discuss candidate eligibility.
