1. "Stony Brook Remembers 9/11: Celebrating America's Freedoms" at University Art Gallery in Staller Center

Drop-in workshop from Sept. 3 - 26, allows visitors to create works that will be the focal point of this workshop project. Visitors will be able to draw, paint, sculpt and write. This project was made possible by grants from Wal-Mart Foundation and the Friends of the Staller Center. Additional support received from Greatland Target, Island School and Art Supply, and Goldberg & Rodler Landscape Designs.

3. New Full-Time And Adjunct Faculty Information Night Tuesday,9/10/02 @ 5pm In Celt, Melville Library Rm E1337

The Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, in conjunction with Instructional Computing, is sponsoring an evening of discussion and hands-on computer training for new and returning adjunct faculty.
Representatives from both areas, as well as University Libraries, the School of Professional Development's Electronic Extension Program, and the University Bookstore, will demonstrate educational resources available to you, as well as general discussions about who can help you when you have a question.
From the mundane (where do I get a parking permit?) to the technical (Blackboard training), this orientation session will address your unique needs.

4. Salute To Stony Brook - Adopt a Rubber Duck

Salute to Stony Brook will be held on Thursday, September 19, 2002. One of the festivities planned is Rubber Duck Races down the brook located next to the Administration Building. Project Liberty provides free supportive counseling services to persons, families, and groups affected by the events of September 11th. Individual counseling and support groups are available for anyone affected by the attacks and the aftermath. 10. The Adult Literacy Center at Stony Brook - Needs you!

The Adult Literacy Center at Stony Brook University is a partnership between the Literacy Volunteers of America-Suffolk County, Inc.and Stony Brook University. The Center is designed to serve the employees, students, their families, stakeholders, and other constituents.
The Adult Literacy Center focuses on the university primary missions of teaching, research, and service. Services include basic literacy tutoring for the low-level reader (below 6th grade) and for those in need of conversational English skills.
The Adult Literacy Center at Stony Brook University is in need of volunteers to help individuals within our community learn to read and write and/or speak conversational English. Tutor Training Workshops will be offered at libraries throughout the county starting in September 2002 and on campus Spring, 2003. 11. Employee Assistance Program Lunchtime Learning - LUNCH PROVIDED

HEALTHY BOUNDARIES BETWEEN PARENTS AND TEENS
Having healthy boundaries means we are able to connect, in positive ways, what we want as a parent with what the teenager wants. In doing so, we build mutual consideration and respect. 12. A special event to support children with cancer

"Little Miracles-For Children with Cancer" will be a unique fashion show, featuring children who have survived cancer modeling the latest adorable styles in children's clothing. Beyond raising money to help our children and their care givers fight cancer, the event gives children and their parents the opportunity to celebrate their recoveries and to be recognized for their extrodinary courage. The event will be held on September 19, 2002 at Villa Lombardi's in Holbrrok from 6:00 - 10:00 PM. 15. Airline Tickets Purchased Outside of the OGS Air Travel Service Contract

New terms and conditions, for tickets purchased outside of the OGS Air Travel Service Contract:
 Non-refundable tickets must be used for the specifically ticketed flight; these tickets will have no value once the flight has departed. It is imperative to notify Austin prior to the scheduled departure date that a non-refundable ticket will not be used, Austin has the ability to make changes to non-refundable itineraries before scheduled departure, subject to certain restrictions and fees.
 Customers ticketed by Airlines that qualify for an e-ticket and request a paper ticket will be charged an additional charge per ticket.
 US Airway customers with non-refundable tickets will not be allowed to stand-by for alternate flights. American Airline customers will be allowed to stand-by for alternate flights for a $100 fee.
Tickets purchased through the OGS contract contain the full protection of the contract terms and conditions.

21. Web Theater - September 12, 13 and 14th

Web Theater explores the tenuous relationship between nature and technology. The piece will be a spectacle in English and Spanish with English subtitles. This is a collaboration of work between the Chilean performers Pamela Diaz Lobos and Sidhartha Corvalan. It will take place at the Fanny Brice Theatre on campus at 8:00 p.m.
The author is Agustin Letelier (Chilean director with residence in Paris).

25. AKI MATSURI (Japanese Autumn Festival) Sunday September 15th.

On September 15th, the Asian American Faculty Staff Association is hosting an Aki Matsuri (Japanese Autumn Festival). Cultural activities and demonstrations are followed by exciting performances by the Japanese dance and vocal group "Hanayui" (part o the famous KODO taiko group) and drumming by New York's premier taiko group "Soh Daiko".

Live festival performances will dazzle the audience with youthful energy, drums and excitement.

31. Diabetes and Periodontitis

Are you a Type 1 Insulin-Dependent Diabetic? Do you have Periodontal (Gum) Disease?
Periodontal (gum) disease has been shown to make it more difficult to control diabetes.
We are conducting a study to determine whether Periodontal Treatment can reduce specific markers of infection/inflammation that may make it more difficult for you and your physician to control diabetes.

32. Integrative Asthma Care and Prevention

The Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of Family Medicine will be conducting a three-part series on Integrative Asthma Care and Prevention.
This series will be available to asthma patients twelve years and older. Participants will be examined and evaluated individually in order to assess asthma severity and to determine whether their current treatment is optimal.
The group discussions will review state-of-the-art medical management, asthma triggers, prevention, proper use of inhalers, spacers and peak flow meters. The discussions will also integrate nutrition with whole foods, the value and safety of nutritional supplements and herbs, breathing exercises, yoga, stress management, massage, self-hypnosis, meditation and guided imagery
The series will be on Wednesday, September 4, 11, and 18 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at 33 Research Way in Stony Brook Technology Park. Most insurance plans accepted with appropriate co-pay at each visit.

33. Clinical trial for females

34. Study of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Do you have chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)?
Participants are needed for the CFS Research Project funded by the National Institutes of Health. The project involves the study of daily patterns of activity, energy, fatigue, and stress in people with CFS. Also, a two year follow-up assessment will be done to determine how the illness changes over time.
Participation would involve (1) two phone screenings; (2) a psychological interview; (3) completion of questionnaires; (4) medical evaluation; (5) three weeks of daily ratings of energy, fatigue, and stress using an electronic diary and activity measurement with a belt-mounted activity monitor; and (6) a follow-up two years after the initial assessment involving steps 3 and 5.
Participants will be paid for their efforts and the medical evaluation is free of charge. Participants will receive feedback about their behavioral patterns and medical status. For further information, please contact Dr. Fred Friedberg at 2-8252.

35. A Study to Treat Osteopenia and Periodontal Disease

Is it possible that you have osteopenia? Do your gums bleed when you brush? Have you been told you have gum disease?
Would you like to earn $500
If you are a post-menopausal woman, not taking medications for osteoporosis, The School of Dental Medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook is conducting a clinical research project on a medication that may improve your gum disease and your osteopenia. If you are a woman with mild to moderate periodontal disease, early signs of osteoporosis and are between the ages of 45 and 70 you may qualify for this study. 36. Volunteers Needed For Research Study

The Department of Preventive Medicine at Stony Brook is seeking volunteers to participate in a study funded by NIH to learn more about how melatonin levels may be related to women with and without breast cancer. Participants will be asked to provide urine samples over a 24-hour period and complete several questionnaires.
You may be eligible to participate if: you have NO personal history of cancer, are between the ages of 50 - 75, are postmenopausal, and are NOT taking melatonin supplements, sleep aides, or certain other medications.
Participants will receive $50 for completing the study. If you are interested in learning more, please call Ms. Sheila Camacho at 631-444-7789. Volunteers must live within 20 miles of Stony Brook.

37. Osteoporosis Prevention And Management

The Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of Family Medicine is offering a series of three group visits for the prevention and management of osteoporosis.
The groups will also discuss osteoporosis in an integrative, holistic fashion with focus on measures that may be added to conventional treatment such as nutrition with whole foods, supplements, yoga, and exercises to improve hip and spine bone density. Conventional monitoring techniques and medical intervention with hormone replacement therapy and drugs will be covered as well. The series of three, two-hour sessions will be conducted on consecutive Wednesdays, October 2nd, 9th and 16th between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. at 33 Research Way, Stony Brook Technology Park.
