1. Volunteers for Salute to Stony Brook
On Thursday, September 19, 2002 between 4:00 p.m. and dusk, the President's Office is hosting Salute to Stony Brook. The Academic Mall will be transformed into a vibrant street fair with student, faculty and staff performances, contests, delicious food, music and a grand finale, complete with fireworks.
In order to ensure the success of the Salute, the help of many volunteers is needed. We hope that you are available on September 19th to give an hour and a half of your time. By choosing one of the following two time slots, you will still be able to join in the afternoon's festivities:
Volunteer time slot 1: 4:00 - 5:30 p.m.
Volunteer time slot 2: 5:30 - 7:00 p.m.

3. Adjunct Information Night-Wednesday, August 21st, 2002 @ 6pm Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, Melville Library Room E1337
The Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, in conjunction with Instructional Computing, is sponsoring an evening of discussion and hands-on computer training for new and returning adjunct faculty.
Representatives from both areas, as well as University Libraries, the School of Professional Development's Electronic Extension Program, and the University Bookstore, will demonstrate educational resources available to you, as well as general discussions about who can help you when you have a question.
From the mundane (where do I get a parking permit?) to the technical (Blackboard training), this orientation session will address your unique needs.

5. Parking Lot And Garage Work During The Week Of August 19Th!!!
Minor repair work will commence in the administration garage on monday 8/19 after 4pm for 7-10 days.
Landscaping work will be done in the stadium/infirmary lot during the same time period.
Please follow direction from staff on hand and be aware of parking space changes as indicated by sign, cones/tape and other safety devices.

6. Ombuds Office Has A New Home
The University Ombuds Office has moved to Room W0505 in the Melville Library. The office is located alongside the zebra path, next door to the Alliance Room, with an external entrance on the southwest corner of the library.

7. Step into Something New... Get Ready for SAC, Phase II
On Sept. 4th, starting at 12:30p.m., the excitement will start with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony & tours of the fabulous, new wing in the Student Activities Center, which boasts a wonderful, student lounge, beautiful new multi-purpose spaces, somewhat similar to the current SAC auditorium, additional wellness center with showers, a new art gallery and.... To showcase these spaces, there will be freebies, food and events galore, i.e. concerts, spell-binding hypnotist, student dance parties, step show, super movie, scooping out success ice cream party and lots more! So, the Student Activities Center is the place you'll want to be. Mark you calendars for Sept. 4th. Join the fun. Everyone is welcome. Stay tuned for more info. Hope to see you there!

8. Stadium Opening Now Inside A Month; Fireworks To Follow Opening Game September 14
Just 26 days remain until Stony Brook University opens its brand-new, 8500-seat outdoor stadium on September 14. With the press box and VIP suites fully enclosed, the attention will now center on putting the finishing touches on Sufflok County's largest outdoor facility.
The Stony Brook football team will christen the stadium on Saturday, September 14 when they tackle Long Island rival St. John's at 6:00 p.m.
The all-weather field surface, lights, bleachers and chairbacks are fully installed. The 40-foot by 50-foot scoredboard, complete with a jumbo screen, will be installed in the first week of August.

10. Waivers applications for international student health insurance
Students who carry F or J visas are automatically charged for the mandatory international student health insurance plan. Waivers are considered only for those who are currently enrolled in a comparable insurance plan, and file the required form by 9/20/02. Waiver information and forms are available at the Student Health Insurance Office in the West Campus Infirmary. New students must attend the insurance orientation on either 8/20 (grad students) or 8/28 (undergrads). International graduate students on F-1 visas with academic teaching or research appointments must also attend a separate orientation on 8/22. These students will not need to complete a waiver, but must enroll in the special insurance plan for graduate student employees. For information call 632.6054 or 632.6144, Monday-Friday, 9am-4:00pm.

11. Fall Fashion Festival
FALL FASHION FESTIVAL to be held Thursday, 10/17 at the Meadow Club in Port Jefferson from 6:30-10:30 PM. Proceeds benefit the women's cancer programs of the LI Cancer Center. Cocktail hour, with cash bar, full course dinner, Chinese Auction, door prizes, and a fabulous fashion show, featuring our own "celebrity" models, such as Drs. 13. Stony Brook Choral Auditions in Early September
Auditions for the two Stony Brook choirs - the Chorale and the Camerata Singers - will be held early September. The Chorale auditions will be held Monday, September 9, 7:15 pm,room 0113, Staller Center. No appointment necessary for Chorale audition. Bring a prepared solo song in any style. Auditions for the more advanced Camerata Singers are by appointment only. The ability to read music is required and excellent sight-reading is necessary for Camerata Singers. Repertoire for both choirs includes Berlioz's "Lelio", the exciting dramatic sequel to the "Symphonie fantastique", and a special Christmas program of Magnificats by Raminsh and D. Scarlatti. 14. USB Pre-College Music Program Auditions on September 7
Now in its seventh year, the USB Pre-College and Community Music Programs will hold auditions for 2002-03 on Saturday, September 7, beginning at 10:00 a.m. New chamber music groups will be forming for musicians 11-18 years old in strings, woodwinds, flute choir, brass, piano, and for voice. Groups perform classical and jazz music. The Pre-College program meets on Saturdays on the Stony Brook campus throughout the school year. Also on Sept. 7, there will be a placement test for Music Theory Classes, which cover theory, musicianship, and analysis. Other classes available include Computer Music Composition and Composition for traditional instruments. Auditions are by appointment only. 15. Auditions for USB Adult Chamber Music Program, Saturday, September 7
The USB Pre-College and Community Music Programs announce the first Adult Chamber Music Workshop for 2002-2003. Adult musicians of all levels of ability and experience are invited to participate in the workshops. Ensembles for strings, woodwinds, brass, piano, and voice will be formed based on performance level and the best possible instrumentation. Pre-existing groups are also welcome. Ensembles will be coached by well-known and experienced musicians who bring years of chamber music coaching to the program. The 90-minute workshops will meet for four weeks during September and October and will culminate in a recital in the Staller Center Recital Hall on October 18. Auditions for the workshop will be held on Saturday, September 7, beginning at 1:00 p.m. For more information or to schedule an audition, call Edith Auner at (631) 632-7328.

The USB Cat Network works to humanely trap, neuter, vaccinate, and care for the many feral cats that live on campus. 17. Meet the Oncology Nurse from The Stony Brook Hospital's Cancer Helpline
The Oncology Nurse from Stony Brook University Hospital's Cancer Helpline will be available in person to answer cancer questions at the Health Resource Center - located in the main entrance of the hospital on August 21,2002 from 12 Noon - 2:00 PM and/ at The Community Resource Center - located in the Stony Brook Village on August 22,2002 from 12 Noon - 2:00 PM. Wave Hill is a country estate located in the Hills of Riverdale, overlooking the Hudson River and Pallisades. It has 28 acres of gardens and greenhouses as well as two historic mansions formally inhabited by Teddy Roosevelt and Mark Twain.
The Cloisters are located on 4 acres overlooking the Hudson River in northern Manhattan's Fort Tryon Park. The building incorporates elements from 5 medieval French cloisters and the gardens are planted according to medieval treatises, poems and works of art. The Cloisters are renowned for their architectural sculpture, illuminated manuscripts, stained glass, metal work, enamels, ivories and tapestries.

If you are a post-menopausal woman, not taking medications for osteoporosis, The School of Dental Medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook is conducting a clinical research project on a medication that may improve your gum disease and your osteopenia. If you are a woman with mild to moderate periodontal disease, early signs of osteoporosis and are between the ages of 45 and 70 you may qualify for this study. 24. Integrative Asthma Care and Prevention
The Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of Family Medicine will be conducting a three-part series on Integrative Asthma Care and Prevention.
This series will be available to asthma patients twelve years and older. Participants will be examined and evaluated individually in order to assess asthma severity and to determine whether their current treatment is optimal.
The group discussions will review state-of-the-art medical management, asthma triggers, prevention, proper use of inhalers, spacers and peak flow meters. The discussions will also integrate nutrition with whole foods, the value and safety of nutritional supplements and herbs, breathing exercises, yoga, stress management, massage, self-hypnosis, meditation and guided imagery
The series will be on Wednesday, September 4, 11, and 18 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at 33 Research Way in Stony Brook Technology Park. Most insurance plans accepted with appropriate co-pay at each visit. To register, please call 631.444.9815.
