1. Snow Advisory - Garage Parking

To allow for quick and easy snow removal, roof tops of the garages will be blocked as space permits. Please respect the cones and park on the lower levels of the garage until the roof is clear. If you must park on the roof, please consider moving your car when space is available on the lower levels and you have a free moment.

2. STATE Health Benefit Option Transfer Period - EXTENSION

The 2002 transfer period began on November 1 and has been extended to end December 31. However, if you are making a change and wish to see it in your December 31 paycheck, West Campus & HSC employees should fill out form PS-404 and submit it to Deborah Giacopelli, 390 Admin Bldg, Z=0751, by December 17. If you select an HMO, you also need to fill out and submit an HMO enrollment form. Changes submitted after December 17 will not occur in the December 31 paycheck and will require retroactive adjustments. The Division of Employee Benefits in Albany just mailed new premium information directly to your home. Please look for it. If you do not want to make a change, no action is required. West Campus & HSC employees can e-mail Deborah.Giacopelli@stonybrook.edu if they have questions.

Hospital UUP and M/C negotiating unit 13 employees - The Sick Leave Exchange Program will be offered for 2003. The enrollment period to participate in 2003 began November 18, 2002 and ends December 13, 2002. Sick Leave Election forms and eligibility critieria are available at the Benefits Office, Room 122, Level 3, HSC. For your convenience you may also obtain this information from the UUP Union Office on Level 5 of the Hospital, Human Resources at Tech Park, and the LISVH Human Resources Office. 5. Notice to hospital and LISVH employees who are under the CSEA or PEF union regarding the Health Options Program (HOP).

Please share this notice with your department - The Health Options Program, which would have allowed CSEA and PEF employees to exchange 3 sick days for a credit to be applied towards the biweekly health insurance premium, was not renewed for the calendar year 2003. This means that PEF and CSEA employees will not be able to exchange 3 sick days for a credit to be applied towards their biweekly health insurance premium for the calendar year 2003, At this time, there is no word as to whether or not this program will be offered in the future.

PLEASE SHARE THIS INFORMATION WITH YOUR DEPARTMENT
The biweekly health insurance rates for 2003 have been approved. Watch your mailbox for the rate flyer which should be arriving at your home soon.
If you are enrolled in the New York State Health Insurance Program (NYSHIP) and wish to change your health insurance option, you have until December 31, 2002 to submit a completed New York State Health Insurance Transaction form PS-404 to the Benefits Office. This form may be obtained from the display rack outside the Benefits Office, (Room 122, Level 3, HSC), Human Resources (Bldg. 3, Tech Park), or Human Resources at the LISVH (Trailer #2).
Choices for 2003 booklets, which describe the health insurance plans available for 2003, can be obtained from the Benefits Office display rack. Questions regarding Option Transfer Period should be addressed to the Benefits Office.

7. Notice to CSEA employees enrolled in the New York State Health Insurance Program regarding Health Insurance Rates.

CSEA employees enrolled in the New York State Health Insurance Program will notice a significant change in the biweekly premium amount for the year 2003. The significant increase in the biweekly health insurance premium amount is due to the fact that CSEA employees will have to share in the cost of the prescription drug coverage that is part of the health insurance coverage. The videotape by author and stress management consultant Loretta LaRoche will be previewed. It is called Relax! You Only Live Once with Loretta LaRoche (60 minutes). Loretta LaRoche tells you how to relax and enjoy every-day life by listening to another authority; the one inside you. 11. CSEA Course Offerings

The School of Health Technology and Management is pleased to announce the continuation of it's new Fall Course offerings to CSEA members.
During the week of December 9, 2002 we will offer the following: Dealing with the Difficult Person Part I, Introduction to Internet Searching, and Ergonomic Case Studies Part II. This foundation course is required for all computer courses. This hands-on introduction is a computer "must" for the small business owner, job seeker or anyone interested in learning about the latest personal computer technology for home or business. Topics covered in this foundational class are an introduction to the Windows icon-based program including the use of the mouse, manipulating Windows, Explorer, file manager and applications. No prior computer knowledge is required. This course is a prerequisite for all computer courses.

17. Colds and Flu Workshop

The Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of Family Medicine is conducting a one and one-half hour lecture on Thursday, December 12th between noon and 1:30 p.m. at their office located at 33 Research Way, East Setauket. The lecture will focus on how to prevent colds and flu this winter and how to diminish their severity.
The use of vaccines and antiviral medications for the flu will be covered. We will also discuss lifestyle changes that promote health. There exist a plethora of supplements/herbs marketed to treat and prevent colds and flu. We will offer a research-based evaluation assessing safety and efficacy of these supplements and herbs.
The cost of this single session will be $25.00 per person payable upon registration.

19. "Remembering Ourselves" -An exciting opportunity to understand ourselves better through oral histories of our female elders. Call for participants.

Sponsored from the Presidential Diversity Grant- "Remembering Ourselves" is a project to improve understanding of ourselves and others by exploring the immigrant experiences of our female elders. If you are interested and have access to a female elder who is able to provide an oral history you are invited to apply to participate in this exciting journey. Time involvement will include interviewing elders, monthly group meetings to formulate, discuss and process interviews, and shared effort in compiling this work into a book or video. As slots are limited, selection will be based on diversity, realistic time availability, ability to reach elder to conduct interview, elder's ability to communicate and stated committment of individual to completing this project. Project Liberty provides free supportive counseling services to persons, families, and groups affected by the events of September 11, 2001. Individual counseling and support groups are available for anyone affected by the attacks or the aftermath. Presentations are available to departments or groups on post-traumatic stress, loss, or coping with loss during the holidays. 30. Exhibit Announcement: This is woman's hour...: The Life of Mary Baker Eddy.

Date: November 1, 2002 - December 31, 2002
Location: Library Galleria
The Special Collections Department is hosting the nationally acclaimed Mary Baker Eddy exhibit, "This is woman's hour...." from November 1 - December 31. Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910) was an influential American author, activist, and teacher, noted for her groundbreaking ideas about women's rights, spirituality, and health. In 1908 she launched The Christian Science Monitor, a leading international newspaper which has received seven Pulitzer Prizes.
The exhibit was designed by The Writings of Mary Baker Eddy in collaboration with the Women's Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls, New York (a National Park Service facility). This touring version has traveled to numerous states and has been seen by over 1.5 million visitors at public libraries, university libraries, and state capital buildings. The exhibit features videos, interactive listening stations, news clippings, and photographs.

The Stony Brook Big Band Jazz Ensembles, with guest conductor and soloist Pete Yellin, will perform in the Recital Hall of the Staller Center. The concert will feature the big band and a fusion combo. The big band will primarily feature modern arrangements of jazz standards such as "Stompin' at the Savoy," "I Love You," & "Early Autumn."
The featured soloist will be alto/soprano saxophonist Pete Yellin. Mr. Yellin is a native New Yorker who has toured and recorded with many seminal names in jazz, including Joe Henderson, Tito Puente, Buddy Rich, the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, Lionel Hampton, Eddie Palmieri, Machito, Mario Bausa, and Maynard Ferguson. Mr. Yellin also founded and continues to lead the program at LIU-Brooklyn as the Coordinator of Jazz Studies.

48. Smoking and Periodontal (Gum) Disease

65 million people in the United States have some form of periodontal (gum) disease. Smoking is the greatest risk factor for periodontal disease, an often silent disease. Periodontal disease is a chronic, progressive inflammatory condition with no known cure. We are conducting a study to determine whether a tetracycline drug can reduce specific markers of inflammation, which can make it easier to control and treat periodontal disease.

50. Participants Needed for Study on Weight Management

Eligible participants will be enrolled for a free 20-week research-based weight management program. Classes will meet weekly for 20 weeks on either Wednesday or Thursday afternoons (around lunch time) in the General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) conference room on 12 floor of the Hospital. The study includes baseline testing and follow-up testing for 1 year after the end of the 20-week program. Participants will be asked to do the following: attend the assigned 20 week weight management program, complete an outpatient physical in December or January, and stay overnight at the GCRC approximately 7 times during the study. During each overnight stay the following will be completed: 9 survey forms, resting metabolic rate study, body composition measurements, and blood chemistries. The first overnight stay will be in December or January. Participants must have a BMI > 30 (at least 20 lbs. overweight). Interested people should call Ms. Connolly at 444-8246.

The Center for Biotechnology is accepting applications for the Summer 2003 Undergraduate Research Internship Program. Internships will be established within the local biotechnology industry. Students will spend their summers, at a company, learning laboratory techniques and contributing to specific research projects. Students interested in careers in the biotechnology industry would be optimal candidates for selection as trainees under this program. Applicants will be selected from students beginning their junior or senior year who are majoring in any biology or chemistry department.
