1. Volunteers for Salute to Stony Brook
On Thursday, September 19, 2002 between 4:00 p.m. and dusk, the President's Office is Salute to Stony Brook.
The Academic Mall will be transformed into a vibrant street fair with student, faculty and staff performances, contests, delicious food, music and a grand finale, complete with fireworks.
In order to ensure the success of the Salute, the help of many volunteers is needed. We hope that you are available on September 19th to give an hour and a half of your time. By choosing one of the following two time slots, you will still be able to join in the afternoon's festivities:
Volunteer time slot 1: 4:00 - 5:30 p.m.
Volunteer time slot 2: 5:30 - 7:00 p.m.

2. Karaoke singers wanted for Salute to Stony Brook celebration
Students, faculty and staff are invited to take part in a Karaoke contest during Salute to Stony Brook, Thursday, September 19th from 4:30 - 7:00 pm. Prizes for best performers. 3. Salute To Stony Brook - Adopt a Rubber Duck
Salute to Stony Brook will be held on Thursday, September 19, 2002. One of the festivities planned is Rubber Duck Races down the brook located next to the Administration Building. We have 500 Rubber Ducks ready for Adoption, if interested in adopting a duck e-mail: campusrecreation@notes.cc.sunysb.edu
Please include your campus address in the e-mail so we may mail you your adoption papers. Once the races are finished you can pick-up your duck at the Campus Recreation Duck Race Tent or later that week.
All events are Free and open to all students, faculty and staff.

4. Still Needed: Opening of School Volunteers
It's not too late to sign up as an Opening of School Volunteer!
Meet & Greet our new students, serve as campus guides, ushers, and information givers! We are seeking volunteers for various tasks throughout Opening Weekend, Sunday, 9/1 and Monday, 9/2, including New Student Sign-In, Convocation, Academic Orientation, First-Year Reading Colloquia and Community Rights/Responsibilities programs. Opening Weekend Volunteers receive free meals and t-shirts!
Also looking for volunteers to staff the Information Tables and other Major Activities/Events throughout the first week of classes.

6. Empire Plan/Long Island Hospitals Negotiations Update
We received notification that Empire Blue Cross/Blue Shield and the Long Island Health Network hospitals have not reached an agreement. As of 12:01 Wednesday, August 21, 2002, the hospitals will no longer be participating providers with Empire Blue Cross/Blue Shield. Empire does anticipate that negotiations will continue, however, no additional provisions have been made to extend the hospitals network participation at this time. 8. 2002 Annual Update for New York STATE M/C Employees Enrolled in the Group Life Insurance Plan
Please be sure to review your personal information contained in the 2002 Update of the M/C Group Life Insurance Plan that you recently received from the Department of Civil Service. There will be a general increase in the personal life insurance premium, as well as any other changes applicable to each enrollee's status, effective September 1, 2002. If you have any changes that you wish to make effective this year, please submit a written request to Sandy White, HRS/Benefits, Room 390, Administration Building, by September 27, 2002.

9. NY STATE Flexible Spending Account (FSA) - 2003 Open Enrollment
The NY STATE FSA 2003 Open Enrollment period is September 16, 2002, to November 15, 2002. This program helps STATE employees save money when paying for health or dependent care expenses. For 2003, a new paperless enrollment will make it easy for employees to apply online or through a toll-free number. Employees may obtain enrollment information or request an enrollment book online at

10. Faculty & Staff Needed for Fall 2002 New Student Convocation - FREE CAP & GOWN!!!
Faculty and Staff holding academic ranking are invited to assist in the welcoming of our new students at the New Student Convocation with Formal Processional on Sunday, 9/1, 9:00-10:00am. This 30-minute event helps our new students to visualize where their journey at Stony Brook will successfully end -- graduation.
A Breakfast Robing Reception is held in your honor as you don your academic regalia to process into the New Student Convocation. Faculty & Staff are encouraged to bring their own alma mater-specific regalia, however a Cap & Gown will be provided free for use at this event.

11. Project Liberty provides free support services to persons affected by the events of September 11th.
Project Liberty offers free supportive counseling and outreach services to persons, families, and groups affected by the events of September 11th. Support groups are available for anyone needing help as a result of the attacks and the aftermath. 12. Walk-A-Thon To Support Habitat For Humanity
Homelessness is on the rise on Long Island, but you can help break the cycle of poverty for a deserving family. Join our campus community and Habitat for Humanity as we work together to make a family's dream of home ownership come true by participating in a Walk-a-Thon for affordable housing on Sunday, September 29 at Heckscher State Park. 13. Fall Fashion Festival
FALL FASHION FESTIVAL to be held Thursday, 10/17 at the Meadow Club in Port Jefferson from 6:30-10:30 PM. Proceeds benefit the women's cancer programs of the LI Cancer Center. Cocktail hour, with cash bar, full course dinner, Chinese Auction, door prizes, and a fabulous fashion show, featuring our own "celebrity" models, such as Drs. Brathwaite, O'Hea, Meek, Dacosta, Yen and Reavis (to name a few). Female models include Lynette LeePack NP, Cristal Jimenez MSW, Jean Callaghan RN, Laurie Rafkin Admin and many more.

17. Adorable kittens need good homes!
The USB Cat Network works to humanely trap, neuter, vaccinate, and care for the many feral cats that live on campus. The Part-Time Job Expo, on Wednesday, September 4, 2002, 11am - 2pm (Sports Complex Arena) links students with on-campus and off campus job opportunities. University departments seek students for work-study and student assistant employment positions. 22. The Adult Literacy Center at Stony Brook - Needs you!
The Adult Literacy Center at Stony Brook University is a partnership between the Literacy Volunteers of America-Suffolk County, Inc.and Stony Brook University. The Center is designed to serve the employees, students, their families, stakeholders, and other constituents.
The Adult Literacy Center focuses on the university primary missions of teaching, research, and service. Services include basic literacy tutoring for the low-level reader (below 6th grade) and for those in need of conversational English skills.
The Adult Literacy Center at Stony Brook University is in need of volunteers to help individuals within our community learn to read and write and/or speak conversational English. Tutor Training Workshops will be offered at libraries throughout the county starting in September 2002 and on campus Spring, 2003. Do your gums bleed when you brush? Have you been told you have gum disease?
Would you like to earn $500
If you are a post-menopausal woman, not taking medications for osteoporosis, The School of Dental Medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook is conducting a clinical research project on a medication that may improve your gum disease and your osteopenia. If you are a woman with mild to moderate periodontal disease, early signs of osteoporosis and are between the ages of 45 and 70 you may qualify for this study. 28. Diabetes and Periodontitis
Are you a Type 1 Insulin-Dependent Diabetic? Do you have Periodontal (Gum) Disease?
Periodontal (gum) disease has been shown to make it more difficult to control diabetes.
We are conducting a study to determine whether Periodontal Treatment can reduce specific markers of infection/inflammation that may make it more difficult for you and your physician to control diabetes. Study participants will receive a free periodontal cleaning and payment up to $300.00.

30. Integrative Asthma Care and Prevention
The Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of Family Medicine will be conducting a three-part series on Integrative Asthma Care and Prevention.
This series will be available to asthma patients twelve years and older. Participants will be examined and evaluated individually in order to assess asthma severity and to determine whether their current treatment is optimal.
The group discussions will review state-of-the-art medical management, asthma triggers, prevention, proper use of inhalers, spacers and peak flow meters. The discussions will also integrate nutrition with whole foods, the value and safety of nutritional supplements and herbs, breathing exercises, yoga, stress management, massage, self-hypnosis, meditation and guided imagery
The series will be on Wednesday, September 4, 11, and 18 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at 33 Research Way in Stony Brook Technology Park. Most insurance plans accepted with appropriate co-pay at each visit.
