1. RF Hourly employee time sheets - early submission deadline due to July 4 holiday.
Due to the July 4 holiday, there is a shortened processing deadline for RF Hourly paid employees. For RF hourly time sheet reporting for the period of June 15 through June 28, please submit these time sheets to RF Payroll no later than Monday July 1. You can fax approved RF Hourly time sheets to 2-4384 or 2-6208. RF Payroll staff will process every hourly time sheet received by July 1 for payment on July 12. Thank you for your cooperation.

2. RF Classified Employee Time Sheets with Overtime - Early Submission Deadline Due To July 4 Holiday
Due to the July 4 holiday, there is a shortened processing deadline for RF Classified (non-exempt) employees where Overtime was worked. If Overtime was worked during the period of June 15 through June 28, please submit those time sheets to RF Payroll by July 1 so the Overtime will appear on the July 12 paycheck. For submission of Overtime time sheets after July 1, the Overtime payment will be made on July 26. Thank you for your cooperation.

Bol, from Leiden University in the Netherlands will be holding a seminar entitled, "A Molecular Switch at the 3'End of Alfamovirus RNAs Regulates Viral Translation and Replication" Hosted by Dr. Eckard Wimmer and Dr. Vitaly Citovsky.

6. FREE Cap & Gown rental for Faculty and Staff!
Faculty and Staff holding academic rank are invited to participate in the New Student Convocation formal Processional on September 1st in the Sports Complex Main Arena. All participants are invited to a special Breakfast Robing Reception at 9:00am in the Sports Complex Squash Lounge. The Procession begins promptly at 9:30 and the entire ceremony is expected to finish by 10:15am. Participants are expected to wear academic regalia appropriate to their alma mater, discipline and rank, and will be seated on the stage during the short ceremony. The Opening of School Organizing Committee will pay for rental orders for participants in the Fall 2002 New Student Convocation. Faculty and Staff that need to rent academic attire for this event must place their order with University Bookstore (2-6553) by July 10th.

7. "Voices of Summer" Concert - Wednesday, July 10, 8:00 pm at the Recital Hall - Free!
The Stony Brook "Voices of Summer", an all women's chorus, will perform at the Staller Center on Wednesday, July 10, in the Recital Hall at 8:00 p.m.. Admission is free. The choir will sing music written for treble voices from the Middle Ages through the present day. Timothy Mount, conductor, was once director of choral music at Mt. Holyoke College for Women. His master's thesis in choral music was written on the history of treble voices through the ages. Come hear this rich, varied, and exquisite repertoire.

10. Office for Human Research Protections(OHRP)Q&A Session Scheduled
To ALL Investigators and Study Coordinators involved in Human Subjects Research: As some of you already know, staff members from the Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) will be visiting Stony Brook on July 8th and 9th as part of their new Quality Assurance Program (full description available at

). As a thank you to us for having them on our campus, they are offering everyone involved in human subjects research an opportunity to come and chat with them, via an informal question and answer get-together.
This Q & A session with OHRP is currently scheduled for Tuesday July 9th, at 3:30pm, in Lecture Hall 5 of the HSC (final location will depend on # of attendees)

12. Issues of Voice and Discourse in the Teaching of Writing....a One-Day Conference - October 5, 2002
"Issues of Voice and Discourse in Teaching College Writing" will be the theme of a one-day conference sponsored by the Program in Writing and Rhetoric at Stony Brook University, to be held Saturday, October 5, 2002, 9 AM to 5 PM. The keynote speaker will be Peter Elbow. Respondents will be Sondra Perl, Louise Wetherbee Phelps, and Ira Shor.
We invite proposals for panel presentations, individual presentations, or interactive workshops. Suggested topics include the issue of student development of his/her voice in college writing, the challenge of managing competing voices in the researched essay, the use of alternative discourses in
representing intellectual work, and the impact of technology on students' texts. The deadline for proposals is June 28, 2002.

13. Science Exploration Camp
This program is for students entering 7th, 8th, or 9th grade in September of 2002. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis; we will accept a maximum of 24 students per session. The academic program will complement the students? science curriculum at school and challenge them to think, investigate, and experiment. Each program will be laboratory-based, but will involve reading, computer searching, writing and group work. Students participating in these programs should be interested in science, inquisitive, and willing to work hard to learn something new! Is it possible that you have osteopenia?
Do your gums bleed when you brush? Have you been told you have gum disease?
Would you like to earn $500
If you are a post-menopausal woman, not taking medications for osteoporosis, The School of Dental Medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook is conducting a clinical research project on a medication that may improve your gum disease and your osteopenia. If you are a woman with mild to moderate periodontal disease, early signs of osteoporosis and are between the ages of 45 and 70 you may qualify for this study. 16. Self-Management Course for teenagers with fibromyalgia
A six-session Fibromyalgia Self-Help Course for Teens is being offered, free of charge in Bayhsore. This course is being conducted as a research study for treatment of fibromyalgia in teens. It has been developed as a collaborative effort of the Arthritis Foundation, Schneider Children's Hospital and Stony Brook University. Participants will be instructed in how to reduce pain; how to pace, prioritize and plan for fatigue management; how a positive attitude affects fibromyalgia; how exercise plays a role in feeling better and how you can better communicate with others about fibromyalgia. SB Child Care School Age Summer Program now has part time/flexible enrollment options. You choose the days your child will attend, and pay a daily rate of $45.00.
