June 20, 2002, a TIAA-CREF Representative will be at Tech Park, Bldg. 31, Conference Room A to conduct individual counseling sessions from 8 am to 4 pm for Tech Park Employees. To schedule an appointment call TIAA-CREF at 1-800-842-8412.
Tech Park, LISVH, Coram Health Center and hospital employees may contact TIAA-CREF at 1-800-842-8412 to schedule an appointment for an individual counseling session on a different day.

2. Reminder - June Blood Drive For Faculty, Staff And Students
It's blood drive again. To make the June drive successful we urge the Stony Brook University community to make a difference at our upcoming Blood Drive this week. 3. American Express Procurement Card Security
American Express Procurement Card security falls under the guideline set forth by New York State. Please be aware that authorized use of the procurement card is limited to the person whose name appears on the face of the card. The procurement card should not be loaned to another person. The American Express account number should not be posted or left in a conspicuous place. Questions related to the procurement card should be directed to Maryann Dolan at 2-6017.

4. Networking Repairs at HSC Library -- June 23, 2002
On Sunday June 23, 2002 there will be East Campus networking upgrades that will affect operations of the HSC Library. Beginning at 6:00 AM, the HSC Library's online catalog and website will be inaccessible for approximately 8 hours. Upgrades will also affect computer and network usage within the physical library during this time period. We apologize for any inconvenience.

5. Summer Sessions Office is Moving
to Room 104 Administration Bldg.(between the Admissions Office reception area and the Campus Card Office) during the week of June 17 and will offer only limited services that week. It will be open for business as usual on Monday, June 24. Office hours are M-F,9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The telephone number will remain 632-7790.

6. Babies'& Children's Memorial Garden Fundraiser
Jewelry sale fundraisers (Terrie of Silver Creeations) to benefit the Babies' & Children's Memorial Garden will be held on Monday June 17th and again on Monday June 24th from 9:30 am - 5 pm in University Hospital on Level 5 between the cafeterias. Please stop by and support the garden.

7. An investigational study on a medication that may improve your gum disease and your osteopenia

Do your gums bleed when you brush? Have you been told you have gum disease?
Would you like to earn $500
If you are a post-menopausal woman, not taking medications for osteoporosis, The School of Dental Medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook is conducting a clinical research project on a medication that may improve your gum disease and your osteopenia. If you are a woman with mild to moderate periodontal disease, early signs of osteoporosis and are between the ages of 45 and 70 you may qualify for this study. 8. Meet the Oncology Nurse from The Stony Brook Hospital's Cancer Helpline
The Oncology Nurse from Stony Brook University Hospital's Cancer Helpline will be available in person to answer cancer questions at the Health Resource Center - located in the main entrance of the hospital on June 20,2002 from 12 Noon - 2:00 PM and/ at The Community Resource Center - located in the Stony Brook Village on June 21,2002. This is an opportunity to have cancer questions answered and to obtain cancer related information

10. CSEA Worker Training Courses
The School of Health Technology and Management will hold the end of the Spring course offerings for CSEA employees this week. Please note there is a time change for Job Interview Tips Part III. This will be held on Wednesday, June 19, 2002 10:30-12.
Dealing with the Difficult Person will be held on Wednesday, June 19, 2002 2:00 - 3:30. The time was incorrectly printed on the registration form.
Both classes will be held in the SHTM MILC Room #500, HSC, Level 2, behind the escalators.

11. Study of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
If you are 18-60 years of age and have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), you are invited to participate in a study funded by the National Institute of Health to learn about the relationships between activity, fatigue, and stress in CFS. 12. Laser Eye Sugery Seminar at Stony Brook
Stony Brook Ophthalmology will be offering two free educational seminars regarding laser vision correction. These sessions will be held at Tech Park on June 18th & June 26th starting at 7PM.
Dr. Marc Dinowitz, who is the cornea and refractive eye surgeon in the Dept of Ophthalmology, will be conducting these informal seminars.

13. Looking For A Positive And Convenient Summer Experience For Your Kindergarten, 1st Or 2nd Grader? SBCCSI's On Campus Program.
Stony Brook Child Care Services (SBCCSI) is offering a summer program for children who have completed kindergarten, first and second grade. The lead teacher is a certified NYS elementary school teacher and will offer a balance of individual / group, indoor/ outdoor, active / quiet play, art, music, science, language, math activities and field trips celebrating summer.
The program runs Monday thru Friday from 8 am - 6pm. Parents can sign up for 6,7,8,9 or 10 weeks. The choice of which weeks is up to parents. Priority and a 10% discount is given to University, Hospital and HSC families. For more information call 632 6930.

The Summer Camp at Stony Brook is back for its third exciting year. The Camp combines a unique twist of educational activities and athletics for children between the ages of 5 -12. 16. Issues of Voice and Discourse in the Teaching of Writing....a One-Day Conference - October 5, 2002
"Issues of Voice and Discourse in Teaching College Writing" will be the theme of a one-day conference sponsored by the Program in Writing and Rhetoric at Stony Brook University, to be held Saturday, October 5, 2002, 9 AM to 5 PM. The keynote speaker will be Peter Elbow. Respondents will be Sondra Perl, Louise Wetherbee Phelps, and Ira Shor.
We invite proposals for panel presentations, individual presentations, or interactive workshops. Suggested topics include the issue of student development of his/her voice in college writing, the challenge of managing competing voices in the researched essay, the use of alternative discourses in representing intellectual work, and the impact of technology on students' texts. The deadline for proposals is June 28, 2002.

17. Ergonomics for Therapists Workshop with Karen Jacobs. June 20, 2002
Karen Jacobs, EDd, OTR/L, CPE, FAOTA, Clinical Associate Professor, is an internationally recognized occupational therapist and certified professional ergonomist, well known for her work in ergonomics and health care marketing. She is currently teaching in the Occupational Therapy program, Boston University. She is the past President and Vice President of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) and founding editor of the inter-disciplinary and international journal WORK. A Journal of Prevention, Assessment and Rehabilitation. Her current projects include: violence prevention in the schools, ergonomic computing for children, and grant-funded research on safety and health for dentists. She also hosts a weekly Cable TV show, Life Style by Design.

18. Science Exploration Camp
This program is for students entering 7th, 8th, or 9th grade in September of 2002. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis; we will accept a maximum of 24 students per session. The academic program will complement the students' science curriculum at school and challenge them to think, investigate, and experiment. Each program will be laboratory-based, but will involve reading, computer searching, writing and group work. Students participating in these programs should be interested in science, inquisitive, and willing to work hard to learn something new!
