19. Help Build the Habitat for Humanity Stony Brook House

Homelessness is on the rise on Long Island, but you can help
break the cycle of poverty for a deserving family. Join our
campus community and Habitat for Humanity as we work together
tomake a North Bellport family's dream of home ownership come
true.

It costs roughly $60,000 in materials and services to build a
house on Long Island. Stony Brook has committed to raising
$40,000; the balance is funded through Habitat for Humanity.
Every department on campus and a variety of student groups are
making plans to raise funds for their designated part of the
house.

So, take the Habitat Challenge calling for communities to
eliminate substandard housing in their area within this
generation. Support the Stony Brook House fundraising events and
help us reach our goal. For more information, contact your
department coordinator, or visit our web site on the YOCL page at

33. Thurs. 2/14, 4:30pm at HISB. Nandini Bhattacharya,
Valparaiso University: "James Cobb and Colonial Cacophony: Doing
the Enlightenment in Different Voices"

HISB is located at E4341 Melville Library

Bhattacharya will examine the plays of James Cobb, an
eighteenth-century British dramatist, for their articulation of a
globalized, circumatlantic discourse of power and trauma. Cobb's
plays reveal some of the promises and poignancies of
enlightenment globalization, issues that have reappeared in our
own era. To establish the links between Cobb's globalization and
ours, enlightenment discourse will be shown to anticipate the
twinned enthusiasms and crises that accompany our own
globalization and appear in literary products such as the work of
Salman Rushdie.

Nandini Bhattacharya is associate professor of English Literature
and chair of Gender Studies at Valparaiso University. She has
published Reading the Splendid Body: Gender and Consumerism in
Eighteenth-Century British Writing on India (1998). She has a
book on slavery, commodity circulations, connoisseurship and
taste in the late-eighteenth-century transatlantic world,
forthcoming from Ashgate press.
