1. Salute To Stony Brook - Adopt a Rubber Duck
Salute to Stony Brook will be held on Thursday, September 19, 2002. One of the festivities planned is Rubber Duck Races down the brook located next to the Administration Building. We have 500 Rubber Ducks ready for Adoption, if interested in adopting a duck e-mail: campusrecreation@notes.cc.sunysb.edu
Please include your campus address in the e-mail so we may mail you your adoption papers. Once the races are finished you can pick-up your duck at the Campus Recreation Duck Race Tent or later that week.

7. Student Health Insurance Plan
The University offers all domestic students (undergrads and graduate students) a basic, reasonably-priced health insurance plan. Enrollments are being taken through September 30. Insurance coverage begins when processing of the enrollment materials is complete. 12. The Adult Literacy Center At Stony Brook - Needs You!
The Adult Literacy Center at Stony Brook University is a partnership between the Literacy Volunteers of America-Suffolk County, Inc.and Stony Brook University. The Center is designed to serve the employees, students, their families, stakeholders, and other constituents.
The Adult Literacy Center focuses on the university primary missions of teaching, research, and service. Services include basic literacy tutoring for the low-level reader (below 6th grade) and for those in need of conversational English skills.
The Adult Literacy Center at Stony Brook University is in need of volunteers to help individuals within our community learn to read and write and/or speak conversational English. Tutor Training Workshops will be offered at libraries throughout the county starting in September 2002 and on campus Spring, 2003. The HSC Library will charge for printing from the public access reference terminals and from terminals in the Coller Learning Center lab and class rooms, beginning September 9. Each printed page will cost ten cents. Print jobs can only be activated with your new campus ID card, or with a cash card purchased from the Card Value Center dispenser across from the Circulation Desk. There will be no refunds for damaged or lost print jobs, or for lost or damaged cards. There will be no cash transactions for printing. See

21. "Stony Brook Remembers 9/11: Celebrating America's Freedoms" At University Art Gallery In Staller Center
Drop-in workshop from Sept. 3 - 26, allows visitors to create works that will be displayed in gallery. The freedom to create and the freedom to express ideas will be the focal point of this workshop project. Visitors will be able to draw, paint, sculpt and write.
This project was made possible by grants from Wal-Mart Foundation and the Friends of the Staller Center. Additional support received from Greatland Target, Island School and Art Supply and Goldberg & Rodler Landscape Designs.

This course explores the significance various processes of globalization have for our analysis of politics and society. The class is designed as a survey introducing students to the field of Global Sociology. It offers sociological perspectives on different manifestations of political, economic, social and cultural globalization. Particular attention will be paid to the effects these processes have on key themes in various areas of sociological inquiry such as: the changing role of state sovereignty and the emergence of nation-state transcending forms of legitimacy; the underlying political and social implications of a global economy; the reconfiguration of international relations and changing features of warfare; the significance of New Social Movements and ;the impact of migration on the contested notion of transnationalism and concomitant conceptions of citizenship; the fusing of cultural forms and related tensions between local and global trends.

29. A special event to support children with cancer
"Little Miracles-For Children with Cancer" will be a unique fashion show, featuring children who have survived cancer modeling the latest adorable styles in children's clothing. Beyond raising money to help our children and their care givers fight cancer, the event gives children and their parents the opportunity to celebrate their recoveries and to be recognized for their extrodinary courage. 30. "Music Basics for Kids" Classes Forming for Kindergarten - 3rd Graders
Experience music through rhythmic movement, ear-training, singing games, and improvisation. Music Basics for Kids" is based on Dalcroze Eurhythmics, an excellent foundation for all aspects of music making. Young instrumentalists with Dalcroze training typically progress faster and with heightened understanding and skill in their long-range musical studies. Classes meet on Saturday mornings in the Music Department starting on September 21 and running through June. All classes taught by Dorothea Cook, also on the faculty for Dalcroze Eurhythmics at the Lucy Moses School of Music and Dance in New York City. 34. Web Theater - September 12, 13 and 14th
Web Theater explores the tenuous relationship between nature and technology. The piece will be a spectacle in English and Spanish with English subtitles. This is a collaboration of work between the Chilean performers Pamela Diaz Lobos and Sidhartha Corvalan. It will take place at the Fanny Brice Theatre on campus at 8:00 p.m.

Periodontal (gum) disease has been shown to make it more difficult to control diabetes. We are conducting a study to determine whether Periodontal Treatment can reduce specific markers of infection/inflammation that may make it more difficult for you and your physician to control diabetes. 38. Integrative Asthma Care and Prevention
The Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of Family Medicine will be conducting a three-part series on Integrative Asthma Care and Prevention.
This series will be available to asthma patients twelve years and older. Participants will be examined and evaluated individually in order to assess asthma severity and to determine whether their current treatment is optimal.
The group discussions will review state-of-the-art medical management, asthma triggers, prevention, proper use of inhalers, spacers and peak flow meters. The discussions will also integrate nutrition with whole foods, the value and safety of nutritional supplements and herbs, breathing exercises, yoga, stress management, massage, self-hypnosis, meditation and guided imagery
The series will be on Wednesday, September 4, 11, and 18 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at 33 Research Way in Stony Brook Technology Park. Most insurance plans accepted with appropriate co-pay at each visit.

40. Volunteer Needed for Study
The Department of Preventive Medicine at Stony Brook is seeking volunteers to participate in a study funded by NIH looking at how melatonin levels may be related to breast cancer in women.
Participants will be asked to provide urine samples over a 24-hour period and complete several questionnaires. A fee of $50 will be awarded for completing the study.
You may be eligible to participate if you are between the ages of 50 and 75, are postmenopausal, have no personal history of cancer, and are NOT currently taking melatonin supplements, sleep aids or certain other medications.
