Do you need assistance with writing effective performance reviews? This workshop will give you hands-on practice in writing a performance evaluation. It will also address questions regarding contractual requirements of a performance evaluation. Hospital UUP and M/C negotiating unit 13 employees - The Sick Leave Exchange Program will be offered for 2003. The enrollment period to participate in 2003 began November 18, 2002 and ends December 13, 2002. Sick Leave Election forms and eligibility critieria are available at the Benefits Office, Room 122, Level 3, HSC. For your convenience you may also obtain this information from the UUP Union Office on Level 5 of the Hospital, Human Resources at Tech Park, and the LISVH Human Resources Office. 3. For Hospital Employees participating in the Tax-Deferred Annuity Program during 2002 - Watch your mail for a reminder letter.

Hospital employees who participate in the Tax-Deferred Annuity Program with TIAA-CREF are being sent a reminder letter that your current deduction will continue into 2003, unless you initiate a change. Please read the reminder letter as the limits for 2003 have increased. If you have not received a reminder letter, but participated in the tax-deferred annuity program during October 2002 - November 2002 please contact the Benefits Office at x4-2543.
If you participate in a tax-deferred annuity with Aetna, Valic or MetLife, please contact the representative of the company you are using if you wish to change the amount you want to contribute for 2003.

B140W Tuition Waiver applications for the Spring 2003 semester are available in the Benefits Office, 390 Administration Building. The B140W must be completed and returned to Benefits, Z=0751, for approval no later than Friday, December 6, 2002, c.o.b. UUP represented employees may also apply for an additional UUP sponsored waiver form for the Spring 2003 semester. The UUP waiver form does not have a return deadline. 8. Employee Assistance Program Humor Helps - The Benefits of Laughter Lunchtime Learning - LUNCH PROVIDED

The videotape by author and stress management consultant Loretta LaRoche will be previewed. It is called Relax! You Only Live Once with Loretta LaRoche (60 minutes). Loretta LaRoche tells you how to relax and enjoy every-day life by listening to another authority; the one inside you. Loretta helps you lose your worries by finding your sense of humor - even in the most unlikely situations. Loretta's contagious spirit and humor show that "life is better when you lighten up!" 17. Colds and Flu Workshop

The Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of Family Medicine is conducting a one and one-half hour lecture on Thursday, December 12th between noon and 1:30 p.m. at their office located at 33 Research Way, East Setauket. The lecture will focus on how to prevent colds and flu this winter and how to diminish their severity.
The use of vaccines and antiviral medications for the flu will be covered. We will also discuss lifestyle changes that promote health. There exist a plethora of supplements/herbs marketed to treat and prevent colds and flu. We will offer a research-based evaluation assessing safety and efficacy of these supplements and herbs.

18. The Humanities Institute at Stony Brook Presents A Distinguished Visiting Lecture by Purushottama Bilimoria

Title: How Gandhian Nonviolence Imaginary shaped the African-American Civil Rights Movement since c. 1910
Where: The Humanities Institute, E4340 Melville Library
When: Thursday December 5, 2002 4:30 pm.
Among other things, 2001 was declared the International Year of Reconciliation. 'A Season for Nonviolence' was declared, promoting public awareness of 'KinGandhian' nonviolence imaginary across the country. But why is Gandhian nonviolence being celebrated within an African American ambience? There is a profound story here, beginning around the turn of the 20th century, which our guest speaker has been investigating and from which some images and highlights are offered on this occasion.
Purushottama Bilimoria is presently A Professor of Philosophy at Deakin University in Australia. Areas of publications and teaching include Indian philosophy and ethics, philosophy of religion and on cross-cultural issues in ethics, bioethics, social thought and culture, with a major work on theories of testimony and scriptural hermeneutics.

23. Apple Presents: OS X and the Languages

Apple is coming to Stony Brook on Dec. 4th to demonstrate what their newest operating system can do in relation to being a truly international machine, specifically in regard to languages. If you haven't had a chance to look at OSX, the unix based operating system on macintoshes, this will be a great opportunity. OSX will be running in the Language and Learning Resource Center and most other Macintosh SINC sites in the Spring semester.

Project Liberty provides free supportive counseling services to persons, families, and groups affected by the events of September 11, 2001. Individual counseling and support groups are available for anyone affected by the attacks or the aftermath. Presentations are available to departments or groups on post-traumatic stress, loss, or coping with loss during the holidays. 26. Breast Cancer Group Visits

The Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of Family Medicine will be conducting two, two-hour visits for patients with breast cancer and at high risk for breast cancer. These visits will involve a brief, individual evaluation followed by group sessions on nutrition (whole foods, supplements) and mind/body medicine (medication, imagery, prayer).
These visits will be on Wednesday, December 4th and 11th from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at 33 Research Way in Stony Brook Technology Park. Most insurance plans accepted with the appropriate co-pay. For those without insurance, the cost of both sessions will be $80.00 per person payable at the time of registration.

29. Group Exhibition at the University Art Gallery Explores Issues of Identity and Popular Culture

An exhibition entitled "Queer Visualities: Reframing Sexuality in a Post-Warhol World" will be presented from October 19 - December 7. The show includes paintings, sculptures, photographs, video screenings, and installations. This exhibition brings together a group of outstanding artists who re-examine conventional notions of value, permanence, and quality from diverse and distinctive angles to arive at a fresh and mostly off-beat view of both art and human relationships.
Regular gallery hours are Tues.-Fri., noon-4pm, and Saturday, 6-8pm. The gallery will also be open one hour before and during intermission for Staller Center live season performances. ADMISSION IS FREE. For further information, please call the University Art Gallery at 631-632-7240.

31. Exhibit Announcement: This is woman's hour...: The Life of Mary Baker Eddy.

Date: November 1, 2002 - December 31, 2002 Location: Library Galleria
The Special Collections Department is hosting the nationally acclaimed Mary Baker Eddy exhibit, "This is woman's hour....". Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910) was an influential American author, activist, and teacher, noted for her groundbreaking ideas about women's rights, spirituality, and health. In 1908 she launched The Christian Science Monitor, a leading international newspaper which has received seven Pulitzer Prizes.
The exhibit was designed by The Writings of Mary Baker Eddy in collaboration with the Women's Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls, New York (a National Park Service facility). This touring version has traveled to numerous states and has been seen by over 1.5 million visitors at public libraries, university libraries, and state capital buildings. The exhibit features videos, interactive listening stations, news clippings, and photographs.

33. Join Stony Brook University In The Festival Of Lights!

The Holiday season is filled with celebrations that reflect the rich traditions of people from many different cultural backgrounds. To celebrate our diverse campus community during this season, we invite all of Stony Brook to attend The Festival of Lights on this Wednesday, December 4, 7:00 - 9:00PM in the Student Activities Center Lobby. In its second year, The Festival is an intercultural program where the most widely observed holidays of December are highlighted for their common use of light. Come join us and learn about the meaning of Ramadan & Eud-ul-Fitr (Islam), Hanukah (Jewish), Winter Solstice (Native American), Christmas (Christian), and Kwanzaa (African American) celebrations. 34. Stony Brook Stages presents "The Rover" by Aphra Behn - Opens Nov. 21 Staller Center for the Arts

Originally set in Naples during Carnival, this Restoration comedy explores the relationships between men and women and explodes the myths behind them. Florinda wants to marry the dashing (but poor) Belvile although her brother would rather have her marry his weathy friend. Hellena, Florinda's younger sister, is ready to break out of convent school and become a lover. The wild carnival celebration of Mardi Gras gives the sisters their chance to forge their own identities and create their own futures. Directed by Paul Kassel.

42. Kids' Weekend Highlights Seawolves Women's Basketball Tournament

All kids 12-under will receive a free Pizza Hut personal pan pizza coupon when the Seawolves women's basketball team hosts the Holiday Inn Express Tournament Friday and Saturday. A clown will also be on-hand painting faces and tying balloons.

43. Diabetes and Periodontitis

Are you a Type 1 Insulin-Dependent Diabetic? Do you have Periodontal (Gum) Disease?
Periodontal (gum) disease has been shown to make it more difficult to control diabetes. We are conducting a study to determine whether Periodontal Treatment can reduce specific markers of infection/inflammation that may make it more difficult for you and your physician to control diabetes. 44. Free Treatment Available at Stony Brook for Those Who Lost A Family Member or Close Friend on Sept. 11, 2001

Are you or is someone you love having difficulty healing from the death of a loved one as a result of the September 11 Catastrophe?
If so, The Sudden Traumatic Loss Individual Treatment Program may be for you.
Who: Persons 18 years of age or older who have lost a spouse, partner, child, parent, sibling, or close friend or coworker as a result of 9/11.
What: * 20 one-to-one sessions.
* Unique, state-of-the art treatment developed by experts in the fields of bereavement and trauma. This treatment is being researched and involves completing questionnaires.
Where: The State University of New York at Stony Brook, Pace University, and Columbia University.
Cost: The treatment will be offered free of charge for those who are accepted into the study.

46. Smoking and Periodontal (Gum) Disease

65 million people in the United States have some form of periodontal (gum) disease. Smoking is the greatest risk factor for periodontal disease, an often silent disease. Periodontal disease is a chronic, progressive inflammatory condition with no known cure. We are conducting a study to determine whether a tetracycline drug can reduce specific markers of inflammation, which can make it easier to control and treat periodontal disease.

If you are a post-menopausal woman, not taking medications for osteoporosis, The School of Dental Medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook is conducting a clinical research project on a medication that may improve your gum disease and your osteopenia. If you are a woman with mild to moderate periodontal disease, early signs of osteoporosis and are between the ages of 45 and 70 you may qualify for this study.
