1. Volunteer For Welcome Wagon 2002!

The Division of Campus Residences Invites you to be a part of Welcome Wagon 2002. The program is designed to welcome the incoming class of first year students who will move onto campus on Saturday, August 31, 2002 between 9 am and 3 pm. Over 300 student volunteers will welcome the first year students, answer their questions, and assist them in moving their belongings into the residence halls.
We are actively seeking the participation of faculty and staff in this effort. In the past, faculty and staff who have volunteered have been particularly helpful in answering questions and providing information to students, parents, and family members.

2. Volunteers for Salute to Stony Brook

On Thursday, September 19, 2002 between 4:00 p.m. and dusk, the President's Office is hosting a special event (Salute to Stony Brook) on main campus for all students, faculty and staff. The Academic Mall will be transformed into a vibrant street fair with student, faculty and staff performances, contests, delicious food, music and a grand finale, complete with fireworks.
In order to ensure the success of the Salute, the help of many volunteers is needed. We hope that you are available on September 19th to give an hour and a half of your time. By choosing one of the following two time slots, you will still be able to join in the afternoon's festivities:
Volunteer time slot 1: 4:00 - 5:30 p.m.
Volunteer time slot 2: 5:30 - 7:00 p.m.

3. Step into Something New... Get Ready for SAC, Phase II

On Sept. 4th, starting at 12:30p.m., the excitement will start with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony & tours of the fabulous, new wing in the Student Activities Center, which boasts a wonderful, student lounge, beautiful new multi-purpose spaces, somewhat similar to the current SAC auditorium, additional wellness center with showers, a new art gallery and.... To showcase these spaces, there will be freebies, food and events galore, i.e. concerts, spell-binding hypnotist, student dance parties, step show, super movie, scooping out success ice cream party and lots more!
So, the Student Activities Center is the place you'll want to be. Mark you calendars for Sept. 4th. Join the fun. Everyone is welcome. Stay tuned for more info. Hope to see you there!

4. August Blood Drives

Due to new FDA regulations, beginning May 31st we are no longer able to import blood from Europe to meet our needs. The Stony Brook University has maintained a long-standing commitment to make sure that our community's blood supply is plentiful and safe. We urge the Stony Brook University community to make a difference by donating at our upcoming Blood Drives in August. No appointment necessary. DONATE BLOOD NOW. We need it to live.

5. Employees - It's Time To Update Your Office Address!!

Human Resource Services (HRS) and the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) have developed this online service for employees to access and update your own office address information. Changes that you make using this service will automatically update PeopleSoft, the university's official Human Resources system. By updating your office related information you will receive campus mailings and phone calls with improved accuracy. This information will also be printed in the 2002-2003 Stony Brook Faculty and Staff Directory later this year. You can access this web site anytime to update your current office address.

6. Volunteers needed for program, "Scooping Out Success"

Faculty and staff are needed to help scoop out ice cream to students. "Scooping Out Success" is an ice cream social where students are given the opportunity to socialize with faculty and staff. Faculty and staff are asked to bring any information that they would like to share with students. The program is on September 4, 2002 from 7:00pm-9:00pm. 7. Staff Assistant (Part-Time)

Assists in the administration of a large faculty and professional staff union with a broad range of responsibilities involving significant communications between individuals, departments and organizations. Responsible for day to day scheduling and operational activities of the union office. Assists the Chapter President, Executive Board and Chapter committees.
The position requires demonstrated proficiency with personal computers ( e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets) and demonstrated skills in interpersonal matters.
Salary range: $ 10.00 - $ 12.00 per hour

8. Ombuds Office Has A New Home

The University Ombuds Office will be moving toRoom W0505 in the Melville Library on July 8, 2002. The office is located alongside the zebra path, next door to the Alliance Room, with an external entrance on the southwest corner of the library.

9. The Hospital Benefits Office will close from 2 pm to 4 pm on Tuesdays and Fridays.

In an effort to better service our employees and to process transactions in a timely manner, the Hospital Benefits Office (located in the HSC, Level 3, Room 122) will close from 2 pm to 4 pm on Tuesdays and Fridays. Medical and Dental Claim Forms, NYS Health Insurance Transaction Forms, and Employment Applications (for state) can be obtained from the display rack outside the Benefits Office.

10. Adjunct Information Night-Wednesday, August 21st, 2002 @ 6pm Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, Melville Library Room E1337

The Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, in conjunction with Instructional Computing, is sponsoring an evening of discussion and hands-on computer training for new and returning adjunct faculty.
Representatives from both areas, as well as University Libraries, the School of Professional Development's Electronic Extension Program, and the University Bookstore, will demonstrate educational resources available to you, as well as general discussions about who can help you when you have a question.
From the mundane (where do I get a parking permit?) to the technical (Blackboard training), this orientation session will address your unique needs.

13. Meet the Oncology Nurse from The Stony Brook Hospital's Cancer Helpline

The Oncology Nurse from Stony Brook University Hospital's Cancer Helpline will be available in person to answer cancer questions at the Health Resource Center - located in the main entrance of the hospital on August 7, 2002 from 12 Noon - 2:00 PM and/ at The Community Resource Center - located in the Stony Brook Village on August 8,2002 from 12 Noon - 2:00 PM. This is an opportunity to have cancer questions answered and to obtain cancer related information

14. Project Liberty is providing free support services to persons affected by the events of September 11th.

Project Liberty offers free supportive counseling and outreach services to persons, families, and groups affected by the events of September 11th. Support groups are available for anyone needing help as a result of the attacks and the aftermath. 16. Improvements Underway - East Campus Three-Tiered Lot

17. An investigational study on a medication that may improve your gum disease and your osteopenia

Is it possible that you have osteopenia?
Do your gums bleed when you brush? Have you been told you have gum disease?
Would you like to earn $500
If you are a post-menopausal woman, not taking medications for osteoporosis, The School of Dental Medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook is conducting a clinical research project on a medication that may improve your gum disease and your osteopenia. If you are a woman with mild to moderate periodontal disease, early signs of osteoporosis and are between the ages of 45 and 70 you may qualify for this study. 19. Diabetes and Periodontitis

Are you a Type 1 Insulin-Dependent Diabetic?
Do you have Periodontal (Gum) Disease?
Periodontal (gum) disease has been shown to make it more difficult to control diabetes.
We are conducting a study to determine whether Periodontal Treatment can reduce specific markers of infection/inflammation that may make it more difficult for you and your physician to control diabetes. Study participants will receive a free periodontal cleaning and payment up to $300.00.

20. Volunteers Wanted for Research Study

The Department of Preventive Medicine at Stony Brook is seeking volunteers to participate in a study funded by NIH looking at how melatonin levels may be related to breast cancer in women.
Participants will be asked to provide urine samples over a 24-hour period and complete several questionnaires. A fee of $50 will be awarded for completing the study.
You may be eligible to participate if you:
->are between the ages of 50 - 75
->are postmenopausal
->have no personal history of cancer
->and are NOT currently taking certain medications.

25. Managing Workplace Conflict (HTCM02)

This program will help you develop the skills to deal with everyday workplace conflict confidently and with a productive outcome. (Please note: This program will focus on common conflicts that arise between individuals in the workplace. It will not focus on the extreme situations, which may escalate into violence. Program Objectives Analyze conflict situations and determine causes; Create a plan for conflict prevention; Use a 4-step process to resolve conflict; Apply conflict resolution techniques to high stress situations

26. The Attitude Virus: Curing Negativity in the Workplace (HTSR02)

This program illustrates the harmful effect that poor work attitudes can have on productivity, morale and quality service. The underlying causes of these problems will be explored as well as strategies to keep negativity from spreading in the first place.
Program Objectives: Detect different types of negativity and the causes for each; Recognize the impact of negativity; Focus on behavior, not personality, and address stressful situations, constructively, as they come up; Turn attitudes from negative to positive.
Who should attend: This program will be helpful for supervisors and managers who would like to learn additional strategies for improving morale and motivation. It will also be helpful for anyone who wants to understand how negativity can be reversed or prevented.

31. Need Flexible, Part Time Enrollment In A Summer Program For Your School Age Child? Need Coverage Only Occasionally?

SB Child Care School Age Summer Program now has part time/flexible enrollment options. You choose the days your child will attend, and pay a daily rate of $45.00. Select a minimum of ten days over the summer months (through August 30th) to enroll your Kindergarten, 1st or 2nd grader. Open enrollment throughout the summer.
