15. Laser Eye Surgery (i.e. LASIK) at Stony Brook

The response to the establishment of a LASER REFRACTIVE SURGERY
service at Stony Brook Ophthalmology has been phenomenal. In an
effort to "stream-line" the evaluation process, we have
established a new phone number ((631) 444-4996) dedicated solely
to refractive surgery.

Refractive surgery (i.e. LASIK) can reduce one's dependence on
glasses or contact lenses. The laser can now be used to treat
many forms of near-sightedness (myopia), far-sightedness
(hyperopia), and astigmatism.

A special discounted rate will be extended to all Stony Brook
students, faculty, staff, and their immediate family members.

If you would like to learn more about LASIK (and other types of
refractive procedures), or to schedule a FREE & INFORMATIVE
consultation with our laser vision specialists, call

Homelessnessis on the rise on Long Island, but you can help
break the cycle of poverty for a deserving family. Join our
campus community and Habitat for Humanity as we work
together to make a North Bellport family's dream of home

house on Long Island. Stony Brook has committed to raising
$40,000; the balance is funded through Habitat for Humanity.
Every department on campus and a variety of student groups are
making plans to raise funds for their designated part of the
house.

42. Tuesday 2/19, 4:30pm at HISB. Dana Heller from Old Dominion
University: "Does the Future Need Us?: Feminism and Popular
Memory"

HISB is at E4341 Melville Library.

Heller will foreground two very recent mass cultural narratives,
The Blair Witch Project and If These Walls Could Talk II in order
to examine a much larger dilemma: the problem of propagating
feminist history. Indeed, although these narratives exhibit no
explicit relation to one another, they are similarly set into
motion by the trope of found footage, and or the discovery of
documented images and voices that tell us something we need to
know about the past. Once brought to light, these buried truths
are mobilized to play decisive roles in the mediated cultural
struggle over how we remember feminist histories, and whether we
remember feminist history at all. Moreover, by staging broad
clashes of women and reproductive technologies, these texts help
bring into focus anxieties that circulate through popular culture
at large, anxieties ostensibly stemming from feminism's efforts
to reproduce itself in time.
