1. Volunteers for Salute to Stony Brook
On Thursday, September 19, 2002 between 4:00 p.m. and dusk, the President's Office is hosting a special event on main campus for all students, faculty and staff. The Academic Mall will be transformed into a vibrant street fair with student, faculty and staff performances, contests, delicious food, music and a grand finale, complete with fireworks.
In order to ensure the success of the Salute, the help of many volunteers is needed. We hope that you are available on September 19th to give an hour and a half of your time. By choosing one of the following two time slots, you will still be able to join in the afternoon's festivities:
Volunteer time slot 1: 4:00 - 5:30 p.m.
Volunteer time slot 2: 5:30 - 7:00 p.m.
Please contact the Office of Conferences and Special Events at 2-6320 to indicate your time slot preference.

2. Reminder - August Blood Drives
The blood supply during the summer months dips critically low. Each pint of blood that you donate can save up to five lives. Please come and donate blood.

3. Volunteer For Welcome Wagon 2002!
The Division of Campus Residences Invites you to be a part of Welcome Wagon 2002.The program is designed to welcome the incoming class of first year students who will move onto campus on Saturday, August 31, 2002 between 9 am and 3 pm. Over 300 student volunteers will welcome the first year students, answer their questions, and assist them in moving their belongings into the residence halls.
We are actively seeking the participation of faculty and staff in this effort. In the past, faculty and staff who have volunteered have been particularly helpful in answering questions and providing information to students, parents, and family members.

4. Volunteers needed for "Scooping Out Success"
Faculty and staff are needed to participate in the annual ice cream social "Scooping Out Success." This is an opportunity for students to socialize with faculty and staff. Faculty and staff are asked to help serve the ice cream to the students. We are asking that faculty and staff also bring information that they would like to share with the students. The program will be on September 4, 2002 from 7:00-9:00pm. It will take place in the Student Activities Center. 5. Step into Something New... Get Ready for SAC, Phase II
On Sept. 4th, starting at 12:30p.m., the excitement will start with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony & tours of the fabulous, new wing in the Student Activities Center, which boasts a wonderful, student lounge, beautiful new multi-purpose spaces, somewhat similar to the current SAC auditorium, additional wellness center with showers, a new art gallery and.... To showcase these spaces, there will be freebies, food and events galore, i.e. concerts, spell-binding hypnotist, student dance parties, step show, super movie, scooping out success ice cream party and lots more! So, the Student Activities Center is the place you'll want to be. Mark you calendars for Sept. 4th. Join the fun. Everyone is welcome. Stay tuned for more info. Hope to see you there!

6. Staff Assistant (Part-Time)
Assists in the administration of a large faculty and professional staff union with a broad range of responsibilities involving significant communications between individuals, departments and organizations. Responsible for day to day scheduling and operational activities of the union office. Assists the Chapter President, Executive Board and Chapter committees.
The position requires demonstrated proficiency with personal computers ( e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets) and demonstrated skills in interpersonal matters.
Salary range: $ 10.00 - $ 12.00 per hour

7. Seawolves Stadium Opens in 33 Days. Got your tickets?
Just 33 days remain until Stony Brook University opens its brand-new, 8500-seat outdoor stadium on September 14. With the press box and VIP suites fully enclosed, the attention will now center on putting the finishing touches on Suffolk County's largest outdoor facility.
The Stony Brook football team will christen the stadium on Saturday, September 14 when they tackle Long Island rival St. John's at 6:00 p.m.
The all-weather field surface, lights, bleachers and chairbacks are fully installed. The 40-foot by 50-foot scoredboard, complete with a jumbo screen, will be installed in the first week of August.

8. Ombuds Office Has A New Home
The University Ombuds Office has moved to Room W0505 in the Melville Library. The office is located alongside the zebra path, next door to the Alliance Room, with an external entrance on the southwest corner of the library.

9. Student Health Insurance Plan
The University offers all domestic students (undergrads and graduate students) a basic, reasonably-priced health insurance plan. Enrollments are being taken now through September 30. 10. Adjunct Information Night-Wednesday, August 21st, 2002 @ 6pm Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, Melville Library Room E1337
The Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, in conjunction with Instructional Computing, is sponsoring an evening of discussion and hands-on computer training for new and returning adjunct faculty.
Representatives from both areas, as well as University Libraries, the School of Professional Development's Electronic Extension Program, and the University Bookstore, will demonstrate educational resources available to you, as well as general discussions about who can help you when you have a question.
From the mundane (where do I get a parking permit?) to the technical (Blackboard training), this orientation session will address your unique needs.

11. Fall Fashion Festival
FALL FASHION FESTIVAL to be held Thursday, 10/17 at the Meadow Club in Port Jefferson from 6:30-10:30 PM. Proceeds benefit the women's cancer programs of the LI Cancer Center. Cocktail hour, with cash bar, full course dinner, Chinese Auction, door prizes, and a fabulous fashion show, featuring our own "celebrity" models, such as Drs. 12. Save the Date! WALK FOR BEAUTY
The 9th Annual "Walk for Beauty - in a Beautiful Place" will take place on Sunday, September 22, 2002, in Stony Brook Village Center. This 6k/4k walk presented by Stony Brook University Hospital and the Ward Melville Heritage Organization will make history as the first ever walk on Long Island for breast and prostate cancer. 13. Adorable kittens need good homes
The USB Cat Network works to humanely trap, neuter, vaccinate, and care for the many feral cats that live on campus. 14. Do You Have Overactive Bladder That Causes Sudden, Uncontrollable Urges To Urinate That Causes Wetting Accidents?
We are looking for men and women 18 years and older to participate in a research study of an experimental medication for overactive bladder. All study-related medical care and medication will be provided free of charge. If interested please call (631)444-2758.

15. Diabetes and Periodontitis
Are you a Type 1 Insulin-Dependent Diabetic? Do you have Periodontal (Gum) Disease?
Periodontal (gum) disease has been shown to make it more difficult to control diabetes. We are conducting a study to determine whether Periodontal Treatment can reduce specific markers of infection/inflammation that may make it more difficult for you and your physician to control diabetes. Study participants will receive a free periodontal cleaning and payment up to $300.00.

16. Women's Heart Health Series
The Stony Brook Heart Center presents the third symposium in the Women's Heart Health Series on Thursday August 15th from 12:00 to 1:00pm. The focus will be on the treatment of heart disease. 18. Integrative Asthma Care and Prevention
The Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of Family Medicine will be conducting a three-part series on Integrative Asthma Care and Prevention.
This series will be available to asthma patients twelve years and older. Participants will be examined and evaluated individually in order to assess asthma severity and to determine whether their current treatment is optimal.
The group discussions will review state-of-the-art medical management, asthma triggers, prevention, proper use of inhalers, spacers and peak flow meters. The discussions will also integrate nutrition with whole foods, the value and safety of nutritional supplements and herbs, breathing exercises, yoga, stress management, massage, self-hypnosis, meditation and guided imagery
The series will be on Wednesday, September 4, 11, and 18 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at 33 Research Way in Stony Brook Technology Park. Most insurance plans accepted with appropriate co-pay at each visit.

Have you been told you have gum disease?
Would you like to earn $500. If you are a post-menopausal woman, not taking medications for osteoporosis, The School of Dental Medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook is conducting a clinical research project on a medication that may improve your gum disease and your osteopenia. If you are a woman with mild to moderate periodontal disease, early signs of osteoporosis and are between the ages of 45 and 70 you may qualify for this study.
