1. Stony Brook Symposium Morphogenesis: From Signal Transduction to Pattern Formation
The Department of Biochemistry and Cell Biology will host the 20th Stony Brook Symposium entitled: "Morphogenesis: From Signal Transduction to Pattern Formation" to be held on May 20, 2002 from 9am to 5pm and on May 21, 2002 from 9am to 1pm in the Student Activity Center Auditorium.

June 20, 2002, a TIAA-CREF Representative will be at Tech Park, Bldg. 31, Conference Room A to conduct individual counseling sessions from 8 am to 4 pm for Tech Park Employees. To schedule an appointment call TIAA-CREF at 1-800-842-8412.

3. Looking For A Positive And Convenient Summer Experience For Your Kindergarten, 1st or 2nd Grader? SBCCSI's On Campus Program.
Stony Brook Child Care Services (SBCCSI) is offering a summer program for children who have completed kindergarten, first and second grade. The lead teacher is a certified NYS elementary school teacher and will offer a balance of individual / group, indoor/ outdoor, active / quiet play, art, music, science, language, math activities and field trips celebrating summer.
The program runs Monday thru Friday from 8 am - 6pm. Parents can sign up for 6,7,8,9 or 10 weeks. The choice of which weeks is up to parents. Priority and a 10% discount is given to University, Hospital and HSC families. For more information call 632 6930.

6. GCRC Tour
The General Clinical Research Center located on the 12th floor of the Hospital invites you to attend a tour of its center.
The tour will be held on Wednesday, May 23rd and run from 11:00 a.m. through 1:30 p.m. at 30-minute intervals.
The tours will be held monthly and the dates are as follows:
Wednesday, June 19th 11:00 a.m. through 1:30 p.m.
Wednesday, July 17th 11:00 a.m. through 1:30 p.m.
The tours are open to employees and students as well as the public.
The GCRC is an NIH funded research center. It offers a wide range of services to aid investigators and a modern facility that makes volunteering for a study an enjoyable experience.

7. Blackboard: One Day Conference for Faculty & Staff - Thursday 5/23/02
Instructional Computing is offering a day-long conference in Blackboard for interested Stony Brook faculty & staff. This course management system software allows faculty to add a web-based component to their courses. The event will address both beginner (Session A) and advanced (Session B) users. Session A will include: What Is Blackboard & Setting up your Blackboard Course Session B will include Blackboard Beyond the Basics: Using HTML, PowerPoint, Multimedia & Quizzes At 11am in CELT, there will be a session for all interested parties at which time Stony Brook faculty/staff will demonstrate their use of this powerful tool in their courses.

9. Summer Camp at Stony Brook June 24 - August 16th 632-4550
The Summer Camp at Stony Brook is back for its third exciting year. The Camp combines a unique twist of educational activities and athletics for children between the ages of 5 -12. 10. Women's Heart Health Series
The Stony Brook Heart Center is presenting a lunchtime symposium focusing on heart disease in women.
The symposium, which is free of charge, begins on Thursday June 13th from 12:00pm to 1:00pm HSC level 3, lecture hall 6.
Lunch will be provided and pre-registration is required. The series will continue on Thursday July 11th and Thursday August 15. To register or find out more information call 444-7415.

11. Project Liberty is providing free support services to persons affected by the September 11th World Trade Center attacks.
Project Liberty offers free supportive counseling and outreach services to persons, families, and groups affected by this disaster. Groups are now forming for immediate family members who lost a loved one, and for persons who have first hand experience with the events that occurred on September 11th. Please contact Bridget Baio at the Sayville Project at 563-2290 or by E-mail, bbaio@notes.cc.sunysb.edu for assistance or information. Project Liberty is funded by FEMA and the Center for Mental Health Services. All services are free and strictly confidential. The Sayville Project is a community support services agency sponsored by the School of Social Welfare, SUNY @ Stony Brook.

12. Lipid Program Group Visits
Stony Brook University Hospital's Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of Family Medicine will be conducting four, two-hour group visits for patients with elevated lipids and cholesterol.
After an individual clinical evaluation, group visits will review the factors that contribute to increasing levels of lipids and insulin and how they can be decreased with whole foods. Evidence-based information on supplements, genetic influences and indications for anti-lipid medications and their side effects will be reviewed. The role of exercise and stress reduction will also be covered.
The series of four, two-hour sessions will be conducted on consecutive Wednesdays, May 29th, June 5th 12th and 19th from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at 33 Research Way, Stony Brook Technology Park.
Most insurance plans are accepted with appropriate co-pay for each visit. For those without coverage, the cost for the series is $150.00.

13. Stress Management Workshops
The Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of Family Medicine will be presenting a series of three workshops on stress management. The workshops will focus on meditation as the core experience of stress management and will additionally cover the principles of sound nutrition, movement and sleep practices, time management, awareness of thought patterns and emotions. The group will be introduced to several forms of meditation including breathing techniques, the stress relaxation response, mindfulness meditation, walking meditations, heart centered meditations and others.
Dates are Thursdays, June 6th, 13th, and 20th from 8:15 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at 33 Research Way, East Setauket, NY. Facilitators are Br. Clark Berge, SSF, Raja Jaber, M.D., Janet Bienkowski, N.P.

14. Meet the Oncology Nurse from The Stony Brook Hospital's Cancer Helpline
The Oncology Nurse from Stony Brook University Hospital's Cancer Helpline will be available in person to answer cancer questions at the Health Resource Center - located in the main entrance of the hospital on May 23,2002 from 12 Noon - 2:00 PM and/ at The Community Resource Center - located in the Stony Brook Village on May 28,2002 from 12 Noon - 2:00 PM. This is an opportunity to have cancer questions answered and to obtain cancer related information

15. Stony Brook Farmers Market
Starting May 21, the Stony Brook Farmers Market will take place at the Student Activities Center Bus Loop. Visit the farm stands every Tuesday from 11am-4pm, May - October. We now offer fresh produce, specialty breads, flowers, homemade jams, jellies, preserves, pies, sweets, gourmet coffee and gift baskets. A Service Provided by Faculty Student Association.

16. UUP Family Leave Surveys needed ASAP
The UUP Statewide Family Leave Committee has prepared a survey to determine how members have utilized leave provisions to deal with family situations. This survey will provide useful data for upcoming new contract negotiations for UUP. To complete the Family Leave survey, please go online to

18. National Safety Month Carnival - June 24, 2002
Environmental Health and Safety is sponsoring a carnival in recognition of the National Safety Council Worker Safety Week. The event will be held Monday, June 24, in the HSC Galleria, Level 3, from 10 AM to 2 PM. Many interactive demonstrations will be held during the event to help you learn new solutions and safety tips to keep safe and healthy on and off the job. Join the fun and participate in the games, try your luck to win prizes, visit with the vendors and enjoy free popcorn!
