1. Become an Adult Literacy Volunteer Tutor!
There are many adults in the Suffolk County area who need basic
reading, writing, and/or conversational English language skills.
Would you like to become a tutor and make a huge difference in
someone's quality of life. Knowledge of a foreign language is not
required. A high school diploma is required to become a
volunteer. Volunteer tutors develop their skills by attending a
24 hour workshop over the course of eight (8) weeks. The next
workshop begins January 30th on Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 9:00
p.m. at the Longwood Public Library (Middle Island, NY). For more

3. Innovative Technology Development Grant (ITD) Program
The Center for Biotechnology is pleased to announce the 2002 Call
for Applications for the Innovative Technology Development Grant
(ITD) Program. The ITD program supports a broad range of
commercially promising, translational research in all areas of
medical biotechnology, including research products, diagnostics,
or therapeutics. ITD grant funding is available to faculty at SBU
for translational research on the academic campus. Applications
must provide evidence for commercialization potential and be
consistent with the Centers' mission of economic development in
NYS. We encourage projects that are complementary to, and seek
collaboration with, the Center's Applied Bioscience Laboratories.
Faculty with interest or considering submission, are strongly
encouraged to contact Dr. Anil Dhundale, Director, Scientific
Affairs (anil.dhundale@sunysb.edu), prior to writing a full
proposal. Application forms can be downloaded from the Center's

4. 2002 P.A.W.S. Campaign Kick Off
All staff, faculty and friends are invited to the 2002 Providing
Athletes With Scholarships Campaign Kick Off which will be on
Friday, January 25th from 6:00-7:30pm. The Kick Off will be held
in the Indoor Sports Complex Atrium and will include welcome
remarks, a video presentation, volunteer recognition and hors

The Stony Brook University Hospital Corporate Education and

throughout the Hospital and East Campus. This handy reference

7. Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day Set For February 2 at the SBU
Sports Complex
When the Stony Brook men's basketball team takes on America East
rival Albany on Saturday, February 2, at 2:00 p.m. all faculty,
staff and their families will receive admission to the game for
just $2 each. Starting at 10:30 a.m. - the men's basketball team
will put on a clinic for boys ages 5-13. The clinic is available
to the first 125 to sign up. The clinic is $5 and includes a
ticket to the game afterwards. To sign up for your tickets or the

11. Xerox 1090 Copier
For surplus: an analog heavy-duty copier (rated at 90 copies per
minute) we've had for approximately 10 years. It has two paper
trays (1500 sheets total), a document feeder, a sorter/stapler,
and a built in digital auditron. It measures approximately 90
1/4 in wide and 34 3/4 in. deep. It requires a 125V/250V 30A

13. Breast Cancer Prevention
The Cancer Clinical Trials office is still recruiting
participants for the STAR Study. In STAR, two drugs, Tamoxifen
and Raloxifene will be compared for their effectiveness in
reducing the risk of breast cancer. We are looking for
postmenopausal women ages 35 and older who are at risk for breast
cancer. You will be considered at risk if you have: 1) previous
benign breast biopsy, 2) a mother or sister with breast cancer,
3) history of LCIS via excision only, 4) at least 1.66% projected
5 year risk of developing breast cancer per STAR Risk Assessment
Form. If you need more information about this study, feel free

14. Career Women's Luncheon - February 7th
The Employee Activities Council would like to invite you to our

Child/Adolescent Psychiatry, as our speaker. Her talk will be

The Summer Camp at Stony Brook is back for its third exciting
year. The Camp combines a unique twist of educational activities
and athletics for children between the ages of 5 -12. Tuition
includes provision of a camp T-shirt, as well as a hot lunch and

16. GROUP SESSIONS ON BREAST CANCER
The Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of
Family Medicine will be conducting two, two-hour group visits for
patients with breast cancer and at high risk for breast cancer.
These visits will involve a brief, individual evaluation followed
by group sessions on nutrition (whole foods, supplements) and
mind/body medicine (meditation, imagery, prayer).
These series of two group visits will be on February 6th and
February 13th from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at 33 Research Way in Stony
Brook Technology Park. Most insurance plans accepted with the
appropriate co-pay. For those without insurance, the cost of
both sessions will be $80.00 per person payable at the time of
registration.

The Oncology Nurse from Stony Brook Hospital's Cancer Helpline
will be available in person to answer cancer questions at The
Health Resource Center - located in the main entrance of the
hospital on Thursday 1/24/02 12 noon till 2:00-PM and at
TheCommunity Resource Center - located in the Stony Brook Village
on Wednesday 1/30/02 12:00-noon till 2:00-PM. This is an
opportunity to have cancer questions answered and to obtain
cancer related information.

18. International Focus Lecture Series - International Education

Ambassodor Robert Gosende, SUNY Associate Vice Chancellor for
International Programs will speak on the direction of SUNY
international initatives in light of the events of September 11,
2001. Ambassador Gosende served for thirty-five years in the U.S.
Department of State before becoming Associate Vice Chancellor for
International Programs in 2001. His experience includes tours of
duty in Uganda, Libya, Somalia, South Africa, Poland and the
Russian Federation. In Washington, he served as the Deputy
Director and Director for Africa at USIA and as USIA's Associate
Director for Educational and Cultural Exchange. He received
Distinguished Presidential Awards from Presidents Bush and
Clinton for his service as USIA's Director for African Affairs
and as the U.S. Ambassador to Somalia. Cookie and coffee will be
served.

our UUP employees, is in need of leave donations due to illness.

not be donated). Vacation time must be donated in full days and
must leave the donor with a minimum balance of 10 days after the

21. Library Online Catalog (STARS) Conversion POSTPONED
Due to circumstances beyond the Library's control, implementation
of the new STARS system (announced last week) has been delayed
until Spring Recess in late March. In February, access to a test
version of the new system will be made available from the
Library's Home Page. At that time, we will encourage all to try
the new STARS and provide comments and feedback.

LISVH) regarding Long Term Care Insurance Seminars
Med America will be conducting Long-Term Care Insurance seminars
for state employees (Hospital, West Campus, HSC & LISVH) on
January 23, 2002. There will be two sessions. The morning
session will be held at 10:00 am in Lecture Hall 2, Level 2, HSC
and the afternoon session will be held at 1:00 pm in Lecture Hall
3, Level 2, HSC. Both sessions will last about one hour. If you

25. Summer Child Care Program
A full day Summer Child Care Program will be available for
children Kindergarten - 2nd grade from 6/26/02 - 8/30/02.
Applications also being accepted for ages 2 months - 5 years for
openings in summer and fall. At this time we are actively
enrolling 3-5 year old children in child care, and children
grades K through 2nd for after school care. For tours,
