1. Research Foundation Vendor Checks

As part of ongoing efforts to reduce Research Foundation Central Office costs the daily printing of vendor checks will be reduced to three times a week. Effective Monday, January 26 Research Foundation will be printing checks on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays only.
Please note that electronic (ACH) payments for University employee reimbursements will still be available on a daily basis. University employees who receive Travel and other reimbursements from Research Foundation may want to enroll in this program to prevent any delays in receiving payments

2. Alluring Androids and Robots in Film, Photography & Art

Professor Julie Wosk of SUNY Maritime will present an illustrated slide-lecture showcases colorful images of female robots, androids, talking dolls, mannequins and other artificial women ranging from early automatons to lifelike female heroines in today’s video games. These images tell a startling tale of changing attitudes toward science and toward women themselves.
Professor Wosk will be signing copies of her book Alluring Androids, Robot Women, and Electronic Eves following the lecture. This lecture is supported by the NY Council for the Humanities and co-hosted by the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the Undergraduate College of Science and Society.

A seminar by Professor R. Alan Plumb from the Program in Atmospheres, Oceans, and Climate, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. 7. "Naturally Obsessed; the Making of a Scientist" Film Screening

The Center for Inclusive Education (CIE), a division of the Graduate School, in collaboration with the GSO, will host a screening of the one hour documentary film Naturally Obsessed on Wednesday, February 4th at 5:00 PM in the Charles B. Wang Center Theater. Followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers.
Mixing humor with heartbreak, Naturally Obsessed tells an intensely dramatic story about the race to beat the competition to discover the switch that controls appetite in the human body. Naturally Obsessed provides unique insights into what it’s like to do biological research, honestly portraying the quid-pro-quo of the apprentice system, highlighting the ups and downs of the mentor-student relationship, and revealing the emotional roller coaster of a career in science that graduate students must learn to endure. 2. New Discount Policy at Staller Center-click here for info

As of January 1, 2009, Stony Brook University faculty, staff and alumni will be able to purchase two tickets to a professional performance at the discount price when they present their Stony Brook ID at the Staller Center Box Office. In the past, only one ticket per ID was eligible for a discount. For Stony Brook University students, it’s even better.
The new policy will allow students to buy two tickets at half price starting on the first of the month for performances taking place that month.
Student rush tickets that go on sale 15 minutes before the start of a performance are $7, and two can be purchased (subject to availability) with a valid Stony Brook University student ID, allowing students to bring a friend to a Staller Center show at an incredible discount.

4. Author Naomi Wolf to introduce documentary The End of America at Staller Center, Friday, January 30 at 7:00.

Staller Center will host the writer and co-director of the documentary film, The End of America: Letter of Warning to a Young Patriot. Author Naomi Wolf and Co-director Annie Sundberg will be on hand to introduce the film and to answer questions after the screening. The compelling documentary is based on Naomi Wolf’s best-selling book of the same title that looks at the ten steps that close down a democracy. To make the film, a lecture given by Wolf was taped and her points were illustrated with historical footage. The End of America had its world premiere in October 2008 at the Hamptons International Film Festival. Her book of the same name was a 2007 New York Times bestseller. 5. Department of Campus Recreation Ski Trip - Okemo Moutain

The Department of Campus Recreation will offering a ski trip to Okemo Moutain, in Ludlow, Vermont on Sunday, February 22,2009. This trip will have limited seating for faculty/staff and their families. Departure time will be approximately 4:00am at the SAC Loop and will return to campus at approximately 8:00pm. The Cost of the trip is $90.00 for Adults, $79.00 for Young Adults (ages 13-18), $71.00 for children (ages 7 12). Price includes all-day lift ticket and round trip transportation from Stony Brook University to Okemo Mountain. Ski rental is an extra $32.00. 7. Master guitarists and songwriters Pat Wictor and Pete Kennedy share stage at The University Cafe Sunday February 1st 2 PM

Pete Kennedy plays all sorts of guitars (acoustic and electric), electric, electric sitar, dulcimer and even ukelele, and writes terrific songs. Imagine Chuck Berry, Les Paul, Django Reinhardt and Richard Thompson meeting for a jam session, and you have an idea of his influences.
Pat Wictor, a wizard of the lap-style slide guitar, projects a zen-like calm as he takes you into his musical world, a world of classic blues songs, works of writers like Bob Dylan and Fred Neil, and his own acclaimed original songs.

Dreamweaver is the industry-standard website development software, supporting sophisticated functions such as JavaScript, Dynamic HTML, and CSS. 8. Drawing and Painting Classes at the Craft Center

Drawing for the Beginner: If you can hold a pencil, you can learn to draw! To make your drawings look more realistic, you must first learn to quiet the dominant left side of the brain and let the creative right side take charge. No Experience required. Five Thurs, begins 2/12, 7-9pm.

13. Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices

This course is the standard CCNA preparation course for new CISCO test #640-802. The overall objective of the course is to cover all the topics required by the CCNA test.
The principles of Architecture Layering (OSI's reference Model), Multiplexing and Encapsulation and IP addressing (subnetting) are discussed in detail. TCP/IP, IPX, PPP, ISDN and frame Relay Protocols are covered.
Network Equiptment such as repeaters, bridges, routers, hubs and switches are studied in detail. Interconnecting and configuring networking equipment such as Cisco's 2500 and 2600 series routers, 1900 and 2900 catalysts switches are studied.
We will cover how to design networks using VLANS on the above mentioned equipment; students will perform labs on Real Cisco Networking equipment.

1. Are you currently depressed or were you depressed in the past

You may be eligible for a research study! We are looking for volunteers between the ages of 18 65 to participate in a research study on depression and brain functioning. This study involves 1 lab visit (about 3 hours) for a clinical interview and an electroencephalogram (EEG) recording to look at your brain activity while performing a number of tasks and 1 phone interview 6 months later that lasts about 1 hour. 2. Treatment Study for Behavioral Control Problems for Boys and Girls

Children 6 to 12 Years Old Stony Brook University’s Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry is conducting a study supported by the National Institute of Health of treatment steps for children, ages 6 12, who have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and other behavioral control problems such as aggressiveness, explosiveness and low frustration tolerance. Eligible children receive free evaluation and study treatment, including medication and help with behavioral support strategies.

4. Do You Have Heart Failure

Adults diagnosed with heart failure are invited to participate in a symptom monitoring study. The study is testing an educational method to help patients monitor their heart failure symptoms. If qualified to participate, questionnaires about your medical history, symptoms, self-care, and quality of life will be completed. Participants are followed for one year by telephone (15-20 minute interviews 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after enrollment). All participants will be given a weight scale to keep and a booklet on heart failure self-care. You will be paid $20 at both 6 and 12 months if you complete the telephone interviews.
