01. Administrative

1. Campus Software Distribution Web Site Softweb Will Require New Authentication

The Division of Information Technology's campus software distribution Web site, Softweb, is changing its authentication protocol to require NetID username and NetID password instead of your Stony Brook ID number and birthdate when attempting to log in and access the site. The switch to NetID authentication begins Tuesday, Aug. 11, at 9 a.m. As a reminder, your NetID is found in the SOLAR System under the NetID Maintenance link. This is also where you set your NetID password. Please call Client Support at 632-9800 for assistance.
University-licensed software applications can be downloaded from Softweb, including Lotus Notes, Symantec AntiVirus, EndNote, Maple, X-Windows, Impatica, and more.

2. Campus Dining Services Catering Requests

Request for catering services by Campus Dining Services requires the issuance of a purchase order by the Procurement Office as well as the guaranteed number of guests five (5) days prior to the event date. In order for the Procurement Office to issue a purchase order campus departments must contact Campus Dining Services to request catering service for their event. Upon Campus Dining Services' confirmation, an event sheet detailing the catering service will be provided to your department. This event sheet must be submitted to the Procurement Office along with a purchase requisition payable to Lackmann Culinary Service, Inc. with the required supporting documentation listed below:
- Justification for food/catering service event
- List of attendees
- Copy of event flyer/announcement

1. Fall line-up announced for Sunday Street Acoustic Series at The University Cafe

We will begin our sixth season presenting national and international recording artists in the listening room setting of The University Cafe on Sunday, September 27th. The schedule is on the website at www.universitycafe.org.
Look for some first-time performers at the Cafe, like DaisyCutter, Dala, Ana Egge, and welcome back Cafe favorites John Wesley Harding, Ellis Paul, and Rod Picott. The Employee Activities Annual Atlantic City Bus Trip will be Saturday September 12, 2009. The trip leaves from The University 7:30 with an additional stop at the Wicks Road Park & Ride.

2. Foundations of Accounting Methods

This introduction to accounting demonstrates basic accounting fundamentals. Students will explore the recording, summarization and adjusting transactions and the understanding of the basic accounting cycle. Accounting principles and concepts, preparation of budgets and variance analysis will be demonstrated. Hands-on problem sets will be used to reinforce concepts relating to financial statements. At the completion of this course, students should have an understanding of accounting concepts and how they apply to current business situations.

3. Fundamentals of Marketing

This introductory course will cover the many dimensions of marketing principles. Students will explore market research, developing a business/marketing plan, target/test strategies, marketing vs sales, branding; internet options, customer service vs customer loyalty, why price is not king and more.
There will be discussions on some famous marketing success stories and failures. At the completion of this class students should have a good understanding of marketing principles and methods.

4. Defensive Driving Program for UUP Members

A NYSUT sponsored Defensive Driving program is being offered on Tuesday and Thursday, September 29 & October 1 from 6:00PM to 9:00PM in the Wang Center Room 201, for all UUP employees and their immediate family members. Cost is $30 per person, payable in advance. Checks should be made payable to "NYSUT Benefit Trust" and delivered to the UUP office, 104 Old Chemistry, Z=3475. 7. Does Your Child Have ADHD and Severe Problems With Aggression?

Researchers at the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at SUNY Stony Brook are conducting a study of children ages 6 - 12 with ADHD and severe problems with aggressive behavior.
Children will receive a thorough diagnostic evaluation, and treatment with one or two medications. Parents will receive nine weeks of parent training. There is no charge to families for these services.

The General Clinical Research Center at StonyBrook University Hospital is seeking volunteers 18years of age and older with a diagnosis of HIV Positive or AIDS to research the effectiveness of Chromium Picolinate in the treatment of complications of current HIV therapy including insulin resistance, leading to Diabetes and possibly body fat distribution, HIV Lipodystrophy,. 9. Treatment Study for Behavioral Control Problems for Boys and Girls 6 to 12 years old

Treatment Study for Behavioral Control Problems for Boys and Girls 6 to 12 years old. Stony Brook University's Division of Children and Adolescent Psychiatry is conducting a study supported by the national Institute of health of treatment steps for children, ages 6 to 12, who have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and other behavioral control problems such as aggressiveness, explosiveness and low frustration tolerance. Are you a worrier? Are you always anxious? If you are between 18-59 years old and not currently taking antidepressants, you may be eligible to participate in a research study on anxiety and brain functioning. This study involves 1 lab visit (about 3 hours) for a clinical interview and an electroencephalogram (EEG) recording to look at your brain activity while performing a number of tasks and 1 phone interview 6 months later that lasts about 1 hour. 11. Volunteers Needed for a Gastrointestinal Symptoms Study!

We are seeking patients diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease or Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
We are conducting a study to gather detailed information about how life experiences impact gastrointestinal symptoms.
What you can do to help:
To qualify you should be diagnosed with Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis or Irritable Bowel Syndrome. You must be able to come to the research office at Stony Brook 1 time for a 3 hour period and be available for 2 telephone interviews following your study visit. Scheduling will be done at convenient times for you.

1. Al-Anon Meeting

Al-Anon Family Group meetings are being held on Mondays, 11:30am - 1pm in the East Pavilion Board Room at the LI Veteran's Home. Dubbed the Stony Brook Serenity Break, it is open to all family and friends of alcoholics, hoping to provide help and friendship to those affected by someone else's drinking. Anonymity is an extremely important part of this program, providing a safe environment for discussion of topics that will increase understanding and quality of life, especially in difficult circumstances. Anyone needing more information can email Janet Balsamo on Lotus Notes.
