3. Off-Campus Access to MySBfiles Changes Oct. 1

Due to a Windows server upgrade, access to MySBfiles from off campus will require a new server address beginning Oct. 1. This is important for users who want to access their MySBfiles from home or from a computer that is not connected to the campus network. This change does not apply to on-campus computers that are connected to the campus network. Individuals who access their MySBfiles from a shortcut on their desktop or mapped network drive in "My Computer" will not be affected. As of Oct. 1, the new server address will be: https://mysbfiles.stonybrook.edu/home. For read-only access, enter the new URL into a Web browser. For read/write access, Windows users must add a new network place/location. Mac users should make sure they are connecting to the new server address. Instructions for how to set up a connection to MySBfiles can be found at the link below.

Wednesday, September 30, 2009, 3:50pm-5:10pm
Open your classroom to the world. It's no longer necessary to reserve special videoconferencing rooms in order to make a connection between your class and a remote participant. With SBConnect or Skype, along with a simple webcam and microphone, it's possible to invite a guest lecture from anywhere in the world and connect directly from their office, lab or homes to your classroom. Teach your on-campus from out-of-town or your online course from your office. You can conference with your students from home. Interactive web conferencing provides an outstanding modality for engaging students in the learning process and permitting them to experience new learning opportunities that might otherwise be impossible.

In this workshop, you will learn several examples of embedded assessment that you can easily adopt in your daily instruction.

13. Make your lessons SMARTer

Friday, October 2, 9:30am-12:00pm
Integrating technology into the classroom can be daunting. At one point educators questioned the purpose of chalk and a blackboard in the classroom, but with an open mind and patience these tools became one of the greatest assets to learning. Similarly, integrating technology like a SMARTBoard into your lecture can enhance your lessons and make them more enjoyable for you and your students.

15. Maintaining Student Attention by Varying Classroom Activities: Incorporating Change-ups in Delivery.

Friday, October 2, 12:50pm-2:10pm
We all have an all-too-natural tendency to drift off during a lecture presentation. Though attention spans are individual, studies show that students begin to lose concentration 10-20 minutes into the presentation. Not only do these attention drift-offs cause students to miss important pieces of information, but they can be disruptive to your focus as the presenter. In this workshop you will design change-up delivery tactics to incorporate into your classroom session that will prevent your student audience from losing focus during presentations. Resources and a collaborative website will be provided for classroom session planning.

23. Who are our Students? - Teaching the Millennials

Wednesday, October 7, 12:50pm-2:10pm
Education is changing because our students are changing. The Millennials in our classrooms have different worldviews and perceptions about education. Their formative years have been spent in a world that's vastly different than the world in which we were educated. They are the Google and Wikipedia generation. They grew up with computers in their classrooms and texting on their cellphones is one of their primary means of communication. This isn't going away. We tend to teach as were taught and that won't work with the Millenials. Let's discuss who they are and how the learn. How can we effectively reach and teach them and maintain the quality standards and best practices we endorse in our classrooms.
