01. Administrative

1. Microsoft Office Work-at-Home Software Now Available at Seawolves MarketPlace

Employees who wish to purchase Microsoft Office under the work-at-home license agreement can now do so at the Seawolves MarketPlace in the Student Activities Center on West Campus. Windows and Mac versions are both available for $12. Employees need to show their Stony Brook ID card and can pay by cash, check, credit card, procurement card, or purchase order. Material and Service Requisition vouchers will not be accepted. This software was previously distributed to employees through Client Support, but the centrally-located Seawolves MarketPlace has agreed to sell the software through its new and expanded "WolfieTech" line of products. 3. Stony Brook launches new Internet TV show on teaching and learning.

Teaching, Learning + Technology has launched a new Internet TV show which features Stony Brook faculty and staff using innovative approaches and best practices in teaching, and applications of educational technology that have had a positive effect on student learning. Interviews are 15-30 minutes long and focus primarily on faculty members. Video and pictures of the application of the innovation or best practice are included in each show where possible. The interviews are intended to provide a balanced look at both the benefits and challenges of adopting a particular approach to teaching and learning and should be useful to faculty and faculty developers at any campus.

3. EH&S is now offering courses on Blackboard!

EH&S is now offering training classes on-line through the Blackboard e-Education platform. Taking the classes on-line provides the same "credit" that you get when you attend the live class. The on-line class can be used to review the course material after you have taken the live class or to take the annual refresher class if required. 04. Hospital Workshops/Training

1. Lawson Requisition Training For September

Lawson Requisition Training Classes will be held on a weekly basis, to see available dates please go to our Calendar on Lawson Support which you can find on the SBUH intranet.
All classes will be held in the Lawson Training Room #797, Level One, right next to the Blue Elevators. To schedule for any of these classes please contact Michele Thomas, Lawson Support Specialist, Ext. 4-7805. There will be 2 parts covered in these classes, the first half will cover ordering from any of the Storerooms in the Hospital and the second half will cover ordering from an outside Vendor. I suggest that all new employees and/or if you are interested in taking a refresher course, please contact us to attend one of these classes.

2. Free 6 Week Smoking Cessation Classes

Employee Health & Wellness is once again conducting a Free 6 Week Interactive smoking cessation class. The classes begins Tuesday, Sept.15th, 11am-12pm. It is being held in the Preventive Medicine large Conference Room #86 HSC Level 3. Please call 4-7767 to register.

1. Laufer Center For Computational Biology And Genome Sciences: Inaugural Symposium, September 25, 2009-- Call For Abstracts

The Laufer Center is hosting it's first annual symposium on Friday, September 25th! It will be held in the Charles B. Wang Center and will have outside speakers in various areas as well as a poster session for students and postdocs.
Abstracts submitted by September 4, 2009 will be considered for the poster session. Please send abstracts to harris@pharm.stonybrook.edu
Registration for the symposium is not necessary, but lunch will be served to those that do register.

Join us when Stony Brook Seawolves take on Brown University. $2 of each ticket price will benefit Stony Brooks Sunrise Fund, which raises funds to support research and programs for childhood cancer survivors and their families. This event will help support Play Fit-Stay Fit, a wellness program for childhood cancer survivors. $10 includes a $2 donation to the Sunrise Fund Saturday, September 19, at 6 pm, Kenneth P. 2. Afghan Star(87 minutes, Pashtu/Dari with English subtitles, 2009)Part of the Port Jefferson Documentary Series

In Afghanistan you risk your life to sing. After 30 years of war and Taliban rule, pop Idol has come to Afghanistan. Millions are watching the TV series "Afghan Star" and voting for their favorite singers by mobile phone. For many this is their first encounter with democracy. This timely film follows the dramatic stories of four contestants as they risk all to become the nation's favorite singer. The organizers, Tolo TV, believe with this programme they can "move people from guns to music." But will they attain the freedom they hope for in this vulnerable and traditional nation?

This introductory course will cover the many dimensions of marketing principles. Students will explore market research, developing a business/marketing plan, target/test strategies, marketing vs sales, branding; internet options, customer service vs customer loyalty, why price is not king and more.

4. Emergency Medical Technician(EMT)Evening Classes

The Stony Brook School of Heath Technology & Management is offering an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Basic course. It is scheduled to be held on Tuesday & Thursday evenings 5pm to 10pm plus a few Saturdays at 9am. The course starts on September 8th, 2009 and continue through November 26th, 2009. It will be open to individuals 18 years old or older at the time of testing. Successful students will attain New York State EMT certification and will be eligible to apply to the SBU Paramedic course. Tuition cost: $700 plus text books. 5. Ballroom Dance Lessons, Student Union, Wednesday nights

8. Adobe Fireworks CS3

NCE 327 - 3 sessions - Fee: $209
Create web graphics, from a simple logo to a sophisticated rollover or pop-up menu, with this user-friendly program from the leader in web design software applications. Fireworks writes the JavaScript required for complex web graphics, and seamlessly merges with Dreamweaver, Macromedia's web layout program. This course is a thorough introduction to this powerful program. Students will create their own graphics to be incorporated into their website designs in Dreamweaver.

1. Do You Have Heart Failure?

Adults diagnosed with heart failure are invited to participate in a symptom monitoring study. The study is testing an educational method to help patients monitor their heart failure symptoms. If qualified to participate, questionnaires about your medical history, symptoms, self-care, and quality of life will be completed. Participants are followed for one year by telephone (15-20 minute interviews 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after enrollment). All participants will be given a weight scale to keep and a booklet on heart failure self-care. You will be paid $20 at both 6 and 12 months if you complete the telephone interviews. 4. Part-Time Job Expo

Hosted by the SB Career Center, the Part-Time Job Expo links students with on-campus and off-campus job opportunities. University departments offer work-study and student assistant positions. Off-campus employers, many of whom are accessible by bus, visit campus to hire students for part-time positions. The Expo will be located in SAC Ballrooms A and B on 9/3/09 from 11AM-2PM.
