Operations Research Seminar
"Stochastic Shortest Paths"
Evdokia Nikolova (MIT)
Tuesday, May 5, 11:00-12:00
Math 1-122A
Abstract:
How do we get to the airport on time? Ideally we would like to take the shortest path, however in the presence of uncertain traffic what does that mean? Is that the path with smallest expected travel time, or should we minimize the path variance or some other metric? One natural objective is to choose the path which maximizes our probability of arriving on time. This turns out to be equivalent to a non-convex optimization problem, for which no efficient algorithms are available. We develop algorithms that bridge stochastic, nonconvex and combinatorial optimization. In fact, our algorithms extend to solve a much more general framework of stochastic optimization that incorporates risk, beyond shortest paths.

Invited Lecture

Herbert Scarf, Sterling Professor of Economics, Yale University
Core and the Scarf Complex
Two of Professor Scarf’s path-breaking discoveries are
*Sufficient conditions for the existence of a non-empty core in a general cooperative game
*Algorithms for the computation of economic equilibria (which he pioneered and for which his book won the Lancaster Prize in 1973)
Both these contributions are central to Game Theory and Economics. Of late there is a rapidly growing literature around them in the field of Computer Science.
The "Scarf Complex" lies at the heart of these contributions and has turned out to also be of great interest in Algebraic Geometry.
