15. Paula Treichler presents "Media, Medicine, and the Politics of Representation," March 2nd, 4:30PM, HISB Humanities 1008
Physicians, health, and disease have been popular topics of U.S. mass media programming since the early 20th century. Their reliable educational and entertainment value as media products as well as their gripping storylines and seductive visual conventions, tend to divert us, as viewers and even as scholars, from the conditions and conflicts surrounding their production. Yet a host of media productions were directly shaped by the collaboration, competition, and conflicting agendas of these two astonishingly powerful industries. Through a series of vignettes from film and television, this presentation explores the parallel histories of 20th century mass media and medicine as well as recurrent tensions between the two mutually-dependent industries, conflicts in aesthetic and cultural values, contradictory and at times deluded positions toward art and commerce, differing understandings of narrative power, and changing social contexts. Paula A. Treichler teaches at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
