5. Computer Music Concert on Sunday, October 28, 8 pm at the
Staller Center - Free!
Enter the twenty-first century of sound and join us for an
evening of music created by computers, synthesizers, drum
machines, and humans. This year's concert will feature the
creative talents of composers and performers who live and work on
Long Island. Tape pieces by Jason Hanley, Gregory Pfeiffer,
Joseph Auner and Chris Brady use computers to manipulate sounds
such as electric guitar, clarinet, cars, and voice and warp them
into throbbing three-dimensional sonic landscapes that can be
hypnotic, exhilarating, and frightening. David Hurtgen will
perform his piece "Hypnogog" with his Electric chamber trio
consisting of electric violin, electric guitar, and percussion.
This year's guest composer is Herbert Deutsch from Hofstra
University who will perform his "Jazz Images, Worksong and
Blues," the first composition ever made on a Moog Synthesizer.
Come hear all of this and more, including electronic music
combined with video images.

object to be reshaped within surgery and psychiatry from the
1880s to the present.

8. CELT Workshop:
Evaluating Writing AND Handling the Paper Load with Anne
Beaufort, Thursday, October 18th, 11:00am - 12:00pm at CELT
Do you sometimes feel the time you spend giving written comments
on students? writing isn't leading students to improve their
writing as much as you'd wish? Do you spend a lot of time(and red
ink) marking students? grammatical errors, only to find they keep
making the same mistakes in subsequent papers? Or do you avoid
giving writing assignments because of the time-intensive task of
reading and grading them? In this workshop, we'll examine the
research on teacher comments on student writing as a pedagogical
tool and discuss strategies for giving feedback on student
writing that are effective and efficient uses of your time. We'll
also examine the rhetoric of teacher comments to see what signals
we send to students by our words. If at all possible, bring a
sample student paper that you have written comments on. For more
information and to register please go to www.celt.sunysb.edu.

12. CELT Seminar
Topics in Learning and Teaching, Fall 2001
Description : CELT invites faculty to suggest topics for small
group meetings that could occur over a semester or a year on
current topics in learning and teaching that might be of interest
to several people. As a first topic in this series, David
Ferguson, Director of CELT, would like to see if other people
might be interested in forming a small reading/discussion group
to discuss the book "How People Learn: Brain,Mind,Experience, and
School." The book was published by the National Research Council
in 1999. In addition to reviewing relevant research on cognitive
science and neuroscience, the book explores the implications of
such work for learning and teaching in a variey of settings. If
you are interested in being a part of a small group that will
meet occasionally over this semester and perhaps into next
semester, please e-mail David Ferguson at
celt@notes.cc.sunysb.edu to let him know your interest.
