4. CELT's Third Annual Conference on Learning
and Teaching "CRITICAL REASONING AND PROBLEM SOLVING: INQUIRY,
DISCOVERY AND PROBLEM SOLVING IN UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION".

There is a difference between education and training. It is said
that training prepares people to handle tasks that we know how to
do; whereas, education prepares people for tasks that are yet
unknown. An important aspect of education is preparing students
to confront new situations with confidence and to tackle novel
problems. The CELT Conference on "Critical Reasoning and Problem
Solving" will engage faculty from many disciplines in new
approaches to developing students' problem solving abilities.
Keynote address is by Joseph Harris, Ph.D., director of the
Center for Teaching, Learning, and Writing at Duke University,
where he is also an associate professor of English. The
conference will be held on June 22nd, 2001 in the Student
Activity Center @ SUNY Stony Brook. Conference Registration &
Continental Breakfast, 8:00am SAC Lobby For conference
information and to register please visit www.celt.sunysb.edu or
call 632-1030.
