1. Free computer training for CSEA and PEF union members and
their spouses.
The school of Professional Development is a provider of training
for the Long Island Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO Workforce
Development Center adult education program. This is in addition
to the LEAP program. The purpose of the training program is to
enhance the skills and abilities of the union members and their
spouses. All courses sre provided at no cost to the union member

2. Auditions for the Fall Pre-College Music Program
Tuesday evening, September 4, at Stony Brook
The Pre-College Program is holding auditions Tuesday, September
4, at 7 pm. New chamber music groups will be forming for
musicians age 11-18 in strings, woodwinds, brass, piano, and for
voice. New this year is a flute choir, a wonderful opportunity
for flutists of every level to experience ensemble playing. Also
new, the Long Island Brass will be coaching chamber music for
brass.
Also on Sept. 4, is the placement test for Music Theory Classes,
which cover theory, musicianship, and analysis. Other classes
available: Electronic/Computer Music Composition and Composition
for traditional instruments. All classes meet on Saturdays during

3. Auditions for Adult Chamber Music September 10
Following our very successful first year, the USB Pre-College and
Community Music Programs are pleased to announce a new season of
Adult Chamber Music Workshops. Adult musicians of all levels of
ability and experience are invited to participate. Ensembles for
strings, woodwinds, brass, piano, and voice will be formed based
on performance level and the best possible instrumentation.
Pre-existing groups are also welcome. Ensembles will be coached
by well-known and experienced musicians who bring years of
chamber music coaching to the program. The 90-minute workshops
will meet for four weeks during September and October and will
culminate in a recital in the Staller Center Recital Hall on
October 19. Auditions for the first workshop will be held on
Monday, September 10, beginning at 7:00 pm. For more information

4. UPCOMING JOB EXPO
The Office of Financial Aid & Student Employment and the Career
Center are pleased to announce that we will sponsor the 8th
Annual Job Expo during the first week of the Fall 2001 semester.
University departments will seek students for work-study and
student assistant positions. Off-campus employers, many who are
accessible by bus, visit campus to hire students for part-time
positions.
This year's event will be held in the Arena of the Indoor Sports
Complex on Wednesday, August 29, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. A
tentative list of the participating off-campus employers can be
found on the Career Center's website (www.sunysb.edu/career)
under the What's New section.

5. Computing Center Schedule for Labor Day and Sundays
The Computing Center will be closed for the Labor Day weekend,
Sept. 1-3. The following weekend, our Sunday shift will resume
on Sept. 9 with building hours of 4 p.m. - 11 p.m.

6. Hillel Foundation Welcomes Jewish Faculty and Staff
The Hillel Foundation for Jewish Life in the University
Interfaith Center has developed a number of programs to include
faculty and staff on campus. In addition to both orthodox and
liberal services on campus, both of which welcome faculty and
staff families, Hillel also conducts the Hillel Jewish Laboratory
School for children of faculty and staff between the ages of 5
and 13. This Jewish enrichment program, which meets on Sunday
mornings, is directed and led by professional teachers and
student interns and teaches Jewish history, culture, and religion
as well as Hebrew language. In addition to the Laboratory
School, Hillel also offers faculty study groups and periodic
brunch programs. For more information and for a brochure

7. Do You Have a Frozen Shoulder?
This is a clinical study injection therapy for frozen shoulder
(adhesive capsulitis). If successful, patients may be able to
avoid lengthy physical therapy and/or surgery for correction of
their condition.
This study is being performed exclusively at the General Clinical
Research Center, Dept. of Orthopaedics, State University of New
York at Stony Brook (Long Island).

SALUTE TO STONY BROOK
Street Fair and Party
Tuesday, September 11

On the Academic Mall, SAC, Library Galleria, Administration 2nd
Floor Lobby, and Staller Plaza
All students, faculty, and staff are invited to help us celebrate
Stony Brook?s achievements on Tuesday, September 11, starting at
4:30 p.m. and ending with a fireworks finale at dusk. The
Academic Mall and surrounding areas will be filled with free
food, music, dancing, entertainment, contests, and more. Party
participants will be eligible to win great prizes, too, including
two round-trip airline tickets. Free shuttle bus service will be
provided from the front of the Hospital, the HSC Loading Dock,
the Veterans Home, and South Campus.

14. Osteoporosis Prevention and Management Series
The Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of
Family Medicine is offering a series of three group visits for
the prevention and management of osteoporosis. The groups will
also discuss osteoporosis in an integrative, holistic fashion
with focus on measures that may be added to conventional
treatment such as nutrition with whole foods, supplements, yoga,
and exercises to improve hip and spine bone density.
Conventional monitoring techniques and medical intervention with
hormone replacement therapy and drugs will be covered as well.
The series of three, two-hour sessions will be conducted on
consecutive Wednesdays, September 5th, 12th, and 19th from 4:30
and 6:30 p.m. at 33 Research Way, Stony Brook Technology Park.
