1. CELT Seminar
Topics in Learning and Teaching, Fall 2001
Description : CELT invites faculty to suggest topics for small
group meetings that could occur over a semester or a year on
current topics in learning and teaching that might be of interest
to several people. As a first topic in this series, David
Ferguson, Director of CELT, would like to see if other people
might be interested in forming a small reading/discussion group
to discuss the book "How People Learn: Brain,Mind,Experience, and
School." The book was published by the National Research Council
in 1999. In addition to reviewing relevant research on cognitive
science and neuroscience, the book explores the implications of
such work for learning and teaching in a variey of settings. If
you are interested in being a part of a small group that will
meet occasionally over this semester and perhaps into next
semester, please e-mail David Ferguson at
celt@notes.cc.sunysb.edu to let him know your interest.

2. Teaching Technology - Using On-line courseware (Blackboard) in
your classes and/or departments.
Blackboard is a web-based course management system that many
instructors are using in their classrooms. This Fall, some
Academic Departments began to use Blackboard as a means of
communicating with their majors/minors.
During January, Instructional Computing will be offering various
blackboard workshops from What is Blackboard to Creating Quizzes
with Blackboard.
In addition, there will be a 2 hour "Blackboard in a Nutshell",
on Wednesday January 9th from 6-8pm, which is geared toward
Adjunct faculty who are usually not on campus during the day.
Please register on-line at:
http://www.sinc.sunysb.edu/Ic/Classes/
Classes that have less than 4 people registered, will be
cancelled 1 day prior to the scheduled class.
For more information regarding the various resources on campus
for teaching with technology, please visit:

3. 2002 Innovative Technology Development Grant Program Call for
Applications
The Center for Biotechnology is pleased to announce the 2002 Call
for Applications for the Innovative Technology Development Grant

or therapeutics. ITD grant funding is available to faculty at SBU
for translational research on the academic campus. Applications
must provide evidence for commercialization potential and be
consistent with the Centers' mission of economic development in
NYS. We encourage projects that are complementary to, and seek
collaboration with, the Center's Applied Bioscience Laboratories.
Faculty with interest or considering submission, are strongly
encouraged to contact Dr. Anil Dhundale, Director, Scientific
Affairs (anil.dhundale@sunysb.edu), prior to writing a full
proposal. Application forms can be downloaded from the Center's
web site at www.biotech.sunysb.edu or by calling 631-632-8521.
The deadline for receipt of written proposals is 5 p.m., Friday,
