Baroque Sundays Concert Feb. 18 At 3 Pm At Staller Center - Free!
"Love from Spain and England"
The "Baroque Sundays at Three" concert series continues on
Sunday, February 18th, at the Staller Center for the Arts. Come
experience the musical and political romance between Spain and
England during the age of Henry VIII and the defeat of the
'Invincible' Spanish Armada! Traveling alongside their noble
patrons, musicians exchanged new musical genres, ideas, and
instruments that enriched the artistic palette of both
nations. Featuring a commissioned poetic narrative written by
the renowned historian and English literature professor Lawrence
Rosenwald, the baroque musical group, Common Ground, takes you on
a musical journey between Spain and England through lively and
poignant ballads accompanied by the sweet sounds of the lute,
harp, and viol. This moving story is coupled with the melodies of
virtuosic ground bass variations, mystical Spanish harp music,
and both solemn and rousing dances!
Join us for this exciting baroque concert, Sunday, Feb. 18, at
3:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Staller Center. As always,
on the Baroque Sundays at Three series, admission is free with a
small good will offering requested to offset concert expenses and
promote early music at Stony Brook.

2001 Student-Community Wellness Leadership Symposium
On February 13, 2001 from 1:00 p.m. ? 3:00 p.m. in the Student
Activities Center Auditorium, The School of Social Welfare's
Student-Community Development Program and the Office of the Vice
President for Student Affairs at the State University of New York
at Stony Brook will host the 2001 Annual Leadership Symposium on
Student-Community Wellness.
This year?s symposium is entitled ?Campus and Community
Engagements: Engineering New Partnerships? and will focus on the
importance of shaping and building the relationship between
institutions of higher education and the local business and
residential communities for which they exist to serve. Higher
education is beginning to recognize the need for a focus and
imperative which extends beyond traditional ?community
service? and embraces the concept of ?institutional
engagement,? defined by the Kellogg Commission as the long-term
connection of the resources/capabilities of colleges and
universities to the needs and interests of society and our
surrounding communities. Institutional engagement requires viable
university-community partnerships.
This year?s panelist speakers will include Dr. Lattie F. Coor,
President of Arizona State University?s main campus, Dr. Carl
V. Patton, President of Georgia State University, and a third
panelist to be determined shortly. Contact Fred Preston, VPSA,
for more info.
