Steven J. Peitzman M.D., Professor of Medicine and University
Historian, Allegheny University of the Health Sciences will be
giving a talk entitled "Creating a Woman's Place in Medicine:
Philadelphia 1850-1900," drawn from his recent book, A New and
Untried Course : Women's Medical College and Medical College of
Pennsylvania, 1850-1998_ (Rutgers UP, 2000). The talk will be on
Wednesday, March 14, 2001 at 4 pm in HSC Lecture Hall 4 (Health
Sciences Center, L2).
Entrance free, all welcome.

FEDERAL INCOME TAX WORKSHOP FOR INTERNATIONAL FACULTY AND
SCHOLARS
A Federal income tax workshop for international faculty and
scholars will be presented on Wednesday, March 28, 1:00 p.m., in
the Stony Brook Union Bi-Level.
A representative from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will
provide information and training on requirements for filing
Federal income tax forms for tax year 2000 for J-1, H-1B, and
O-status faculty and scholars. Forms will be available at the
workshop and in the Graduate School reception area after the
workshop. NOTE: All international faculty and scholars and their
spouses (if applicable) who were present in the United States
during the calendar year 2000 MUST file a Federal income tax
return regardless of whether any U.S. source income was earned.
International Services cannot help with Federal income tax
preparation. International faculty and scholars are encouraged
to attend this workshop. International students are also welcome
to attend, although the focus will be on faculty/scholar returns.
The filing deadline or those who earned U.S. source income is
April 15, 2001. For more information, contact International

Summer Camp at Stony Brook
June 25 - August 17, 2001
The Summer Camp at Stony Brook is back for its second exciting
year. The camp combines a unique twist of educational activities
and athletics for children between the ages of 5 to 12. Tuition
includes provision of a camp T-shirt, as well as a hot lunch and

Baroque Concert - "The Glory of Bach" at Staller Center, Sunday,
March 25 at 3pm. FREE!
On Sunday, March 25, "Baroque Sundays at Three" is proud to
present the New York virtuoso instrumental ensemble, La
Brillante, featuring Stony Brook alumna HoSun Moon and friends.
The group will perform an all German Baroque program entitled
"The Glory of Bach and his Contemporaries" featuring music of
J.S. Bach and his son, C.P.E. Bach, as well as music of Bach's
contemporaries: Abel and Telemann. The group is made up of
Baroque violin, Baroque flute, viola da gamba, and harpsichord.
They are dedicated to the performance of 17th and 18th century
music on period instruments in such a way that the music is
always alive and expressive. Please bring your "Bach buttons" to
this event. His birthday is March 23 and if he were alive, he
would be celebrating his 316th birthday.
The concert will take place on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in the
Recital Hall of the Staller Center for the Arts on the Stony
Brook campus. Admission is free. To receive a free Music

Attention All Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighters
The Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine,
Department of Preventive Medicine, School of Medicine, University
at Stony Brook has received a grant to provide a unique asbestos
screening program to Volunteer Firefighters in Suffolk County.
All firefighters who are at least 50 years of age with a minimum
of 20 years of service in Suffolk County are eligible.
Firefighters are encouraged to participate in this cost-free

The Long Island premiere of Me & Isaac Newton
March 27, 7:00 p.m., Staller Center for the Arts
Free for the entire community!
As part of the events planned for the Spring Semester of Year of
Community Service (YOCS), students, staff, and faculty will have
the opportunity to view the feature length documentary, Me and
Isaac Newton, which profiles Stony Brook Anthropology Professor
Dr. Patricia Wright and six other prominent scientists. The
screening will take place on March 27 at 7 p.m. at the Staller
Center Main Stage. Dr. Wright will introduce the film and then
answer questions at a reception following the film in the Staller
Center Lobby. Free tickets for the show are now available at the
Staller Center Box Office. For more information or if you need a

3 Doors Down to appear in concert at USB on March 12, 2001 (NEW
DATE)
Popular rock groups 3 Doors Down and Oleander will appear in
concert on Monday, March 12th at 8PM(NEW DATE) at the USB Sports
Complex Arena. Tickets are $25 for USB students and $27.50 for
non-students and are available at the Student Activities Center

Ambassador Harsh Bhasin will present a seminar on "South Africa:
The Transition and After" on March 15 (Thursday), 3:00 PM in the
Javits Room, Main Library. Ambassador Bhasin is a Visiting
Professor of International Relations. He has served in South
Africa for 5 years in senior diplomatic capacities on two
occasions - as Consul General of India in Johannesburg during the
first-ever multiracial democratic elections in 1994, and again as
High Commissioner (Ambassador) of India during the second
election in 1999. The seminar is co-sponsored by the Office of
International Programs, the Graduate School, Department of
Africana Studies, Department of Political Science, and
International Studies Living Learning Center. Coffee and cookies

Women's History Month, Monday, March 12 - Dr. Connie Koppelman,
"Customizing the Body: Tattoo Art by and on Women"
The slide talk will trace the history of tattoo, and the increase
in women artists entering the field, as well as those who have
themselves decorated bears a direct relationship to the women's
movement and women's ideas about "owning" their own bodies.

M. Blume, Suffolk County Coalition Against Domestic Violence
Domestic violence results in more injuries to women than
muggings, rapes, and car accidents combined, and 50% of women
will experience this type of abuse at some point in her life.
This seminar will help educate the audience about the dynamics of
dating and domestic violence, common myths, and what to do if you
or someone you know is experiencing dating/domestic violence.

Academy of Teacher-Scholars Award Information Session
We are making substantial progress in enhancing learning and
teaching on our campus. The Academy of Teacher-Scholars program,
established in 1995 by the University Senate, is an important
part of the aggressive effort that our campus is making to enrich
the learning experiences of all of our students.
The Undergraduate Council of the University Senate will choose up
to five teacher-scholars each year. Winners of this competition
will receive a stipend of $5000, with an additional $5000 in
flexible funds to be paid to departments in the following year.
