Upgrade Lotus Notes Client

There was a great response to last weeks announcement of the need
to upgrade to Notes R5. Several hundred upgrades were
accomplished, but there are some still using the older
version. If you are now running R5, then you have our thanks and
you can ignore the rest of this announcement. (If you have the
dark green menu bar and the icon and bookmark bar on the far left
you are on R5)

For those not yet on R5 the deadline has been extended. Please
try the upgrade instructions below. If you encounter problems
call DoIT Client Support at 2-9800, someone will help you through
any difficulties.

Again, we will be monitoring the status of upgrades and
contacting those who are still using the R4.x clients. All Notes
users cannot realize all the benefits of Notes R5 until everyone
is using it.

First, check to make sure your machine is capable of running R5.
It should be at least a Pentium (Windows 95,98,Me, NT, 2000) or
PowerPC (Mac OS 8.5 or above) 133 MHz with 32 MB of memory and
200 MB free disk space. Then, use the instructions at
http://naples.cc.sunysb.edu/doit.nsf/pages/r5quick to do the
upgrade.

Computer Music "Earfest" Concert Wed.Feb. 7th, 8 pm At The
Staller Center- Free!

Earfest IV: Festival of Tape Music - February 7th at the Staller
Center

Beat back the winter blahs with unique sonic visions from
established and emerging composers, on Wednesday, February 7, at
8:00 pm in the Recital Hall of the Staller Center for the
Arts. The artists, sculpting in sound with computers and
electronics, build very personal statements which can reach
everyone. By turns heartbreaking and humorous, lofty and loopy
-- come hear how expressive loudspeakers can be! Lighthearted
commentary from Dan Weymouth, the Music Department's Computer
Music Director, will make this a "User-Friendly
Production". Admission to the concert is free; donations are
accepted at the door.

To receive a free Music Department Concert Brochure or to be
added to our mailing list, call and leave a message at
(631) 632-7330; fax: (631) 632-7404; or
email: music@notes.sunysb.edu.
For a complete listing of upcoming concerts, visit our web
page:

Program In Writing And Rhetoric - Candidate's Talk For Writing
Center Director

The Coherent Tourist: Teaching Students the Local Language.
Talk led by June Griffin, Professor of English, University of
Virginia.
Date: Friday,January 26th
Time: 10:30 ? 11:30 AM
Place: Conference Room HUM 157

For many students, writing papers in an unfamiliar discipline can
be like traveling to foreign lands: bewildering at best and
likely produce communication problems. As teachers and tutors we
can help our students to avoid many of these communication
problems by showing them how an awareness of the relationship
between a reader's knowledge (of the topic and of the local
conventions) and his or her understanding can act as a guide for
their writing. In her talk, June Griffin will describe three
components of coherence (one structural, two--roughly
speaking--cultural), focusing on how her theories can be useful
to classroom instruction and to one-to-one tutoring.
