2001 Student-Community Leadership Symposium
On February 13, 2001 from 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. in the Student
Activities Center Auditorium, The School of Social Welfare's
Student-Community Development Program and the Office of the Vice
President for Student Affairs at the State University of New York
at Stony Brook will host the 2001 Annual Leadership Symposium on
Student-Community Wellness.
This year's symposium is entitled "Campus and Community
Engagements: Engineering New Partnerships" and will focus on the
importance of shaping and building the relationship between
institutions of higher education and the local business and
residential communities for which they exist to serve. Higher
education is beginning to recognize the need for a focus and
imperative which extends beyond traditional "community
service" and embraces the concept of "institutional
engagement," defined by the Kellogg Commission as the long-term
connection of the resources/capabilities of colleges and
universities to the needs and interests of society and our
surrounding communities. Institutional engagement requires viable
university-community partnerships.
This year's panelist speakers will include Dr. Lattie F. Coor,
President of Arizona State University's main campus, Dr. Carl
V. Patton, President of Georgia State University, and a leader
from a major charitable organization. Contact Fred Preston, VPSA,
for more info.
