Title: Beyond the Latin Lover: Marcello Mastroianni, Masculinity,
and Italian Cinema

The star persona attached to the Italian actor Marcello
Mastroianni was that of the Latin lover, a fact attested to in
the tributes that followed his death in 1996. In fact, Italian
masculinity has been widely seen as the sexual masculine ideal of
Western civilization. What my talk aims to reveal is that this
image is in fact misleading. Italian cinema of the post-war
period reveals the tendentious nature of Italian masculinity.

Underneath the faade of a presumed hypermasculinity is the inetto
(the inept man), an anti-hero at odds a rapidly changing
political, social and sexual environment.

10. University Association General Membership Meeting & Election
Of Officers

The University Association (UA) will hold its membership/election
meeting on Wednesday, September 19, 2001 from 6-8 PM in Health
Sciences Center, L-2, Lecture Hall 4. While the agenda for this
meeting includes the election of 2001/2002 UA officers, its
primary focus is to determine how best to continue your UA?s
long-standing tradition welcoming newcomers, promoting a sense of
campus community through social events and a variety of interest
groups and rewarding academic scholarship among Stony Brook
students.

Over the past several years, UA has increasingly relied on a
small and diminishing group of dedicated individuals to pursue
these efforts. However, this small group has found it difficult
to continue them at UA?s traditional levels of excellence. In
short, your UA is at a crossroads and needs your help. Please
take the time to attend the September 19 meeting.
