12. Wednesday, October 10:  Deborah McDowell, University of
Virginia:  "The I/Eye of Record:  Remembering the Civil Rights
Movement."  4:30 at HISB.

Focusing on photography in the making of the Civil Rights
Movement, Deborah McDowell's talk will survey the iconic images
of the period summarized by police dogs and firehoses turned on
passive demonstrators, for example, and their hold on all
subsequent representations of the period, including first person
accounts. The 'I' of personal memory is eclipsed by the camera's
'eye.' The presentation will also examine these signature images
of the Civil Rights Movement in relation to now commonplace
theories of photography, particularly those that see photographic
signification as exercised in pictorial conventions that are
never 'purely' photographic. Photographic meaning is, then, the
outcome of an interplay of iconic, graphic, and narrative
conventions.

Deborah McDowell teaches American literature in the English
Department of the University of Virginia, where she has been a
full professor since 1987. McDowell is one of the foremost
scholars of Black American literature.

13. Thursday-Friday, October 11-12:  Humanities Institute and le
Collge International de Philosophie, Paris, present  Politics and
Filiation 3:  "Sorority/Fraternity Sisterhood/Brotherhood"

Brotherhood is supposed to constitute the sediment that
guarantees--at least according to the French republican
ideal--freedom and equality. Brotherhood is thought to foster the
feeling of belonging, a sort of political 'friendship' ensuring a
social cohesion that reason alone cannot guarantee.

Brotherhood and sisterhood alike bear a religious heritage that
of cosmopolitanism and the universal word which unbind the
individual from her or his family ties in order that she or he be
integrated into the community of women-sisters and
men-brothers. Yet if there is love between sisters and brothers,
this love is unnatural: 'brotherland' is marred by rivalries and
hatred at the heart of the horde. Politics can foster strife
between brotherly enemies.

Conference contributors are:  Diane Barthel-Bouchier, Alain
David, Jean-Yves Guerin, Jean-Pierre Marcos, Franois Noudelmann,
Mary Rawlinson, Antonia Soulez, Patrick Vauday, E. Ann Kaplan.

15. CELT Workshop:
Evaluating Writing AND Handling the Paper Load with Anne
Beaufort, Thursday, October 18th, 11:00am - 12:00pm at CELT

Do you sometimes feel the time you spend giving written comments
on students? writing isn't leading students to improve their
writing as much as you'd wish? Do you spend a lot of time(and red
ink) marking students? grammatical errors, only to find they keep
making the same mistakes in subsequent papers? Or do you avoid
giving writing assignments because of the time-intensive task of
reading and grading them? In this workshop, we'll examine the
research on teacher comments on student writing as a pedagogical
tool and discuss strategies for giving feedback on student
writing that are effective and efficient uses of your time. We'll
also examine the rhetoric of teacher comments to see what signals
we send to students by our words. If at all possible, bring a
sample student paper that you have written comments on.  For more
information and to register please go to www.celt.sunysb.edu.

27. Emergency Evacuations

The Department of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) has
prepared an Emergency Evacuation planning guide to help you plan
for emergencies. In the event of a fire or other emergency,
seconds count. The safe, orderly and prompt evacuation of
building occupants depends on having the physical safety features
of a building in operating condition as well as having an
emergency evacuation plan. The cooperation and participation of
every building occupant is essential. Every person that lives and
works in a building on campus has an individual responsibility to
know how to evacuate in an emergency and to accomplish the
evacuation when the fire alarm device sounds or when directed by
an authority. The guide is available though the EH&S website.
Please visit the website to obtain a copy of the guide and for
additional environmental, health & safety in formation. If you
need further assistance, please call EH&S at X2-6410.
