1. "LYNN STERN: Photographs from Ten Series" at Staller Center
Art Gallery

Photographs by New York photographer Lynn Stern will be exhibited
at the University Art Gallery in the Staller Center for the Arts
from Thurs., Nov. 8 through Sat., Dec., 15. It was curated by
Professor Donald Kuspit, whose insightful essay appears in the
accompanying catalogue. This exhibition, composed of
black-and-white photographs culled from ten of Stern's series,
are formally linked by their treatment of light and space, and
emotionally linked by their preoccupation with emptiness and
vulnerability.

A gallery talk given by Lynn Stern will be held on THURSDAY,
NOV. 15 from 4:30 - 5:30 pm. An artist's reception will be held
on SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 15 from 6:30 - 8:00 pm. Both are free and
open to the public.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, noon to 4:00 pm, and
Saturday, 6:00 to 8:00 pm. For further information, please call

2. Visit to OSI Pharmaceuticals Inc.

The Center for Biotechnology is pleased to organize a visit to
OSI Pharmaceuticals for Stony Brook University students. November
28, 2001. 10 am - 12:30 pm OSI is a Pharmaceutical Research and
Development Organization (PRDO) that utilizes a high tech,
comprehensive drug discovery and development capability to
rapidly and cost effectively discover and develop novel, small
molecule drug candidates for commercialization by major
pharmaceutical companies. All graduate and senior undergraduate
students in the life sciences are invited to take this
opportunity to visit OSI's integrated, high-tech research and
development capabilities - laboratory, robotics system, compound
libraries and tissue culture area. This visit is limited to 30

3. Stony Brook Chamber Music Concerts on Monday, November 26 and
Tuesday, November 27 at the Staller Center - Free!

These Chamber Music concerts will highlight performances by the
illustrious Stony Brook Graduate Ensembles featuring Chamber
Music from the Baroque to the Contemporary. The concerts will be
performed at 8:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall at the Staller Center
for the Arts on Monday, November 26 and Tuesday, November 27.

4. INTERNATIONAL SERVICES WORKSHOP SERIES # 2: PRACTICAL
TRAINING AND OTHER EMPLOYMENT OPTIONS

International Services will hold a workshop on Optional Practical
Training and other employment opportunities for international
students on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at 1:00 p.m. in the Physics
Building, Room P 112. All interested international students are
encouraged to attend. Applications for Optional Practical
Training after completion of studies in December are currently
being accepted by the international student advisers in

7. Wednesday, November 14: Judith Butler: "Ethical
Violence." 4:30 p.m. at the HISB.

This lecture will consider whether we might rethink ethics
without "judgement" as its central category and will attempt to
rethink the ethical value of 'judgement', when and why it is
necessary, and when and why it exercises a certain violence.
Using Freud and Kafka as points of departure, the talk will query
the violence of conscience and the possibility of a post-moral
ethics.

Judith Butler is Maxine Elliot Professor jointly in Rhetoric and
Comparative Literature at the University of California, Berkeley.
She has written Subjects of Desire: Hegelian Reflections in
Twentieth-Century France (1987), Gender Trouble: Feminism and the
Subversion of Identity (1990), Bodies That Matter: On the
Discursive Limits of 'Sex' (1993), The Psychic Life of Power:
Theories of Subjection (1997), Excitable Speech (1997), and
Antigone's Claim: Kinship Between Life and Death (2000).

the Global Economy"

Kevin Bales, expert on slavery in contemporary times presents the
facts about slavery occurring around us and how consumerism and
the global economy is both supporting and slowly transforming it.

10. CELT Workshop: Discussion as a Mode of Inquiry with Homer
Goldberg, Distinguished Teaching Professor, Emeritus on November
12th, 1-2:30.

This workshop will focus on ways to conduct productive classroom
inquiry through give and take between instructor and students.
Using short texts as our objects of study, we will consider how
to locate analytic problems that 'naturally' provoke thought, how
best to prepare for an unpredictable process, the teacher's
complex role in that process, and specific strategies to help
students reason to some result. To register please go to

This workshop walks through an overview of designing a course and
will provide some direction in the steps that can be used for
designing and implementing a quality course. Topic areas include:
Learning Outcomes, Constructing a Knowledge Table, Themes,
Performance Measures, Creating a Course Assessment and Evaluation

14. Save the Date! -- Presidential Lecture set for December 5th
during Campus Lifetime --

During campus life time on Wednesday, December 5th, (12:40 - 2:10
p.m.) you are invited to attend a Presidential Lecture
Celebrating Diversity by Dr. Robert Thurman, author, scholar,
Buddhist Monk, and activist. His talk will be of special interest
subsequent to the tragic events of September 11th; and will take
place during the campus' celebration of Diversity of Religions
month.

The lecture, entitled "War and Peace and the World Religions:
Indic Contributions to the Dialogue" will present insights into
the lessons for the West that may be contained in India's
experiences and religious traditions. RSVP to ex. 2-6320. Seating

15. Presidential Mini-Grant Forum -- All Faculty Members Invited
-- Wednesday, November 14th

This year, Dr. Kenny has approved a major change in the
Presidential Mini-Grant Program. The maximum amount per
mini-grant award has been increased from $4K to $10K. You are
invited to a special meeting designed to assist you in preparing
a mini-grant application for submission by the deadline date of
February 14, 2002. It's called the Helpful Hints Forum. It will

be held November 14. At the Forum, you can: Speak with a panel of
faculty members who are mini-grant winners, Learn how to maximize
the possibility of winning a mini-grant, Gain insight into the
creative ideas that have been awarded mini-grants in the past,
See samples of successful mini-grant proposals,get a mini-grant
application, and have an opportunity to ask questions.

16. Spring Semester 2002 Tuition Waiver Program

Full-time state and research foundation employees may request a
tuition waiver form for the Spring 2002 semester by calling
2-6150 or by emailing swhite@notes. Please indicate your name,
campus address and whether you are a state or research foundation
employee. The completed waiver form must be returned to Benefits
for approval on or before December 14, 2001. You will be
receiving complete information via email or campus mail shortly.
If you are a UUP represented employee, you may request a separate
UUP waiver form for the Spring semester in the same manner.

17. Harlem Globetrotters vs. Stony Brook Seawolves

Stony Brook University presents The Magicians of Basketball,the
Harlem Globetrotters in a special game appearance. The Harlem
Globetrotters will play the Stony Brook Men's Basketball team on

20. 2002 Summer Sessions Dates Confirmed

The dates of the 2002 Summer Sessions will be as follows:

Session I: Tuesday, May 28 - Tuesday, July 9 (no classes July 4
& 5)

Session II: Wednesday, July 10 - Tuesday, August 20
Extended Session: Tuesday, May 28 - Friday, July 19

These dates are different from those that have previously
appeared on the University Academic Calendar and were recently
approved by the Calendar Committee and the President.

The printed Summer Sessions course preschedule will be
distributed on campus during the week of November 12. The
Preschedule will also be posted on the Summer Sessions Web site
in late November. The final class schedule - with days, times,
and sessions - will be posted on the Web site in January. An
announcement will be made here when the 2002 Summer Sessions Web
site is operational.

21. "FACT, FICTION AND THE FUTURE" TO EXAMINE HISTORY OF
BIOCHEMICAL WEAPONS THREAT

"Fact, Fiction, and the Future" an examination of the history of
biochemical threats, including anthrax and smallpox, and how to
deal with them - will be held at Stony Brook University this
Wednesday, November 14 at 12:40PM in the Javits Lecture Hall,
Room 100. The event, open to all members of the campus community,
will feature presentations by Dr. Peter Viccellio, Clinical
Professor of Emergency Medicine in the School of Medicine and
Dr. Lester Kallus, Clinical Assistant Professor of Emergency
Medicine and Co-Chair of the University's Disaster Preparedness
Committee. In addition, A Wound Care and Injury Care workshop
will be held Wednesday, November 28 at 12:40 in the Student
Activities Center Auditorium. Peter Angelo, Ph.D., Department of
Athletics, will conduct a general workshop covering topics such
as cleaning wounds, bandaging techniques, and caring for
burns. Each participant will receive a free medical emergency
kit.

This program seeks proposals to address deeper understandings of
our similarities and differences. Proposals should include
funding requests from $250 to $2,000.

28. Research Foundation Open Enrollment

During the month of November, all Research Foundation employees
eligible for health insurance can make the following health
insurance changes that will take effect on January 1, 2002:
change to a different health insurance plan, cancel your health

insurance, change from family coverage to individual coverage
and, a change from individual to family coverage will still
require a 5 pay period waiting period unless a qualifying event
can be documented to make the change sooner. To make a change,

29. COLDS AND FLU LECTURE

The Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of
Family Medicine is conducting a one and one-half hour lecture on
Wednesday, December 12th between noon and 1:30 p.m. at their
office located at 33 Research Way, East Setauket. The lecture
will focus on how to prevent colds and flu this winter and how to
diminish their severity.

In this single session, we will show you how to improve and
support your immune system through adequate rest, nutrition,
supplements, herbs and use of the flu vaccine. In addition,
whole food supplements and herbal treatment of colds and flu will
be discussed.

The cost of this single session will be $25.00 per person payable
upon registration.
