Featured speakers for the event include Derek Walcott, Carole
Boyce Davies, and Elizabeth Nunez. There will also be a
presentation given by a representative from the Schomburg Center
for Research in Black Culture.

2. Library Tours
Come to the Melville Library to learn of the many resources and
services it offers. New students, faculty, and staff are welcome
to drop in for a tour. No sign-up necessary. Tours begin at the
Central Reading Room, First Floor of Melville Library.

4. $1000 Fiction Prize winner comes to Stony Brook
Winner of the 10th annual Stony Brook $1000 Short Fiction Prize,
Jennifer Oh of Duke University, will read her winning story
Wednesday September 12 at 4 p.m. in the Poetry Center, 238-239
Humanities. The public is welcome. Only undergraduate students
enrolled at American or Canadian colleges or universities are
eligible for this Prize, which is administered by the Department
of English.

5. Asylum Theatre Company Presents "Taller"
Asylum Theatre Company, Long Island?s newest professional
non-profit repertory performing ensemble, announces the world
premiere production of Taller, by Valerie Lantz-Gefroh (adjunct
professor). Directed by Deborah Mayo (Asst. Prof.) and featuring
Paul Kassel* (Asst. Prof), Laura Ross*, and Steven Gefroh*
Taller is a one-act play about a man and woman who navigate their
way through the agonies and ecstacies of the early years of
parenthood. Along the way they are tempted, taunted and
terrorized by a barrage of characters?experts, pundits, MDs and,
of course, the baby?all embodied by one actor. Presented in a
highly theatrical style, Taller gives the stage to the fears and
dreams of every parent.
Where/When: Staller Center, Theatre II, September 6-8 at 8:00 PM
Tickets are $12, or $8 for students and seniors. Opening Night
Gala tickets are $15 and include a champaign reception following
the performance.

6. Help us Celebrate on Tuesday, September 11 at the Salute to
Stony Brook
SALUTE TO STONY BROOK
Tuesday, September 11
4:30 p.m. Until Dusk
Rain or Shine
On the Academic Mall and SAC * Library Galleria * Administration
2nd Floor Lobby * Staller Plaza
All students, faculty, and staff are invited to celebrate Stony
Brook on Tuesday, September 11, starting at 4:30 p.m. and ending
with a fireworks finale at dusk. The Academic Mall and
surrounding areas will be filled with food, music, dancing,
entertainment, contests, and more. Party participants will be
eligible to win great prizes, too, including two round-trip
airline tickets. Free shuttle bus service will be provided from
the front of the Hospital, the HSC Loading Dock, the Veterans
Home, and South Campus.
For those interested in participating in the Rubber Duck or Bed
Race contests, please contact Sue Dimonda at 2-7206. For the
Talent Show, contact Godfrey Palaia at 2-1463. For the Karaoke
contest, contact Amy Coopersmith at 2-4559.

7. Auditions for the University Orchestra at SUNY Stony Brook on
Tuesday, September 4
There are openings for Strings, Woodwinds and Brass in the
University Orchestra-Susan Deaver, music director and conductor.
Final auditions will be held on Tuesday, September 4 between 2
and 5 p.m. in the Department of Music-Room 2342. Undergraduate
Music Majors and qualified non-Music Majors on the Undergraduate
and Graduate level at SUNY are encouraged to audition. For
further information contact the Department of Music at 632-7330.
Rehearsals are Tuesdays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The Univeristy
Orchestra presents three concerts at Staller Center each year.

9. 2nd Annual Careers In The Bioscience Industry Seminar Series.
The Center for Biotechnology is proud to present the 2nd Annual
Careers in the Bioscience Industry seminar series. These seminars
are a must attend for all graduate students in the life sciences,
engineering and computing fields. Hear key industry leaders speak
on the diverse careers opportunities in the bioscience industry.
The first seminar, Careers in Corporate R & D, will be held on
