2001 Student-Community Leadership Symposium- "Campus And
Community Engagements: Engineering New Partnerships"

On February 13, 2001 from 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. in the Student
Activities Center Auditorium, The School of Social Welfare's
Student-Community Development Program and the Office of the Vice
President for Student Affairs at the State University of New York
at Stony Brook will host the 2001 Annual Leadership Symposium on
Student-Community Wellness.

This year's symposium is entitled "Campus and Community
Engagements: Engineering New Partnerships" and will focus on the
importance of shaping and building the relationship between
institutions of higher education and the local business and
residential communities for which they exist to serve. Higher
education is beginning to recognize the need for a focus and
imperative which extends beyond traditional "community service"
and embraces the concept of "institutional engagement," defined
by the Kellogg Commission as the long-term connection of the
resources/capabilities of colleges and universities to the needs
and interests of society and our surrounding communities.
Institutional engagement requires viable university-community
partnerships.

This year's panelist speakers will include Dr. Lattie F. Coor,
President of Arizona State University's main campus, Dr. Carl V.
Patton, President of Georgia State University, and Dr. Norman
Brown, Board of Directors Chair for the Points of Light
Foundation. Contact Fred Preston, VPSA, for more info.

Study Circles, "Working Together To Shape The Future Of Our
Communities." Volunteers Are Needed To Facilitate Discussion.

Reply to Andrew Collver, Professor Emeritus of Sociology
Andrew.Collver@sunysb.edu or tel. 751-5320.

Residents of communities along the north shore of Brookhaven Town
will assemble for five evenings, April 16-May 18.in groups of
10-15 in five or six locations: Three Village, Port
Jefferson-Port Jefferson Station, Mount Sinai-Miller Place, Rocky
Point-Sound Beach, Shoreham-Wading River, and northern Longwood
School District. Facilitators will be expected to bring out
constructive ideas from all the participants without imposing
their own views, and to summarize what has been said without bias
or distortion. A full day of training will be given on a
preceding Saturday so that facilitators will be prepared to play
their part successfully, and a debriefing meeting will be held on
a Saturday following the five sessions.

The organizer, Philip Lynn of Stony Brook, says: "Study Circles
are small discussion groups that provide a simple way to involve
community members in dialogue and action on social and political
issues. They lead to positive change and help to build the bonds
that are essential to creating healthy communities." The study
circles movement is quite active throughout the U.S. (See
http://civic.net/ACF/SCRC.html.)

Assessment Workshop at CELT

This Spring CELT will offer three workshops having to do with
learning and teaching. These workshops will be offered by Pacific
Crest, an educational consulting and publishing company working
to improve the quality of educational outcomes by focusing on
five key processes: teaching, learning, mentoring, curriculum
design, and assessment. The first workshop is February 27th @
3pm at CELT (E-1337 Melville LIB)

Title: Understanding the Difference between Assessment and
Evaluation

Description: As the role of assessment draws increased interest
and attention within the higher education community, there is the
need to distinguish assessment from evaluation and clear up
misconceptions that may exist. In this workshop, participants
explore both processes in detail, including examining key
similarities and differences. The resulting common basis of
understanding helps to avoid misinterpretations that can lead to
problems and provides the framework for viewing and enhancing
various components of a course. Participants also gain valuable
insights into why students react differently to different types
of feedback.

For more information and to register please visit our web site at
www.celt.sunysb.edu and look under calendar. Any questions
please contact Rita Reagan Redko at 2-1057 or
