1. Ground-breaking ceremony for the Strategically Targeted Academic and Research (STAR) Center 9/24/07

The Ground-breaking ceremony for the Strategically Targeted Academic and Research (STAR) Center at Stony Brook University will take place on Monday, September 24, 2007 at 11:30 AM at the site of the new facility adjacent to the Life Sciences Building on the University campus.
Funded by the New York State Foundation for Science Technology and Innovation, the $25M Center will house the translational research activities of the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the Centers for Advanced Technology in Medical Biotechnology and Sensor Technology.

1. EAP Lunchtime Learning, Gang Awareness Training

This training teaches schools, law enforcement, parents and outside agencies how to identify, address, and verify if an individual is in a gang or associates with one. The training will cover gang symbols, hand signs and colors. The training will show what to look for in an individual who is suspected of being in a gang. The training will also talk about why youth join gangs; the warning signs of gangs and gang violence. Presented by the Suffolk County Department of Probation.

Tutor Volunteers Needed! The Stony Brook Adult Literacy Center is seeking volunteers to help adults learn to read, write, and/or speak English. Tutors meet with their learners two to three hours a week on campus or the Health Sciences Center. All you need is a high school diploma and a desire to help others. All tutors must attend a Tutor Training workshop which takes place on-site. We are now accepting registrations for our Fall Workshop. The workshop schedule is as follows: September 20, Oct. 4, 11, 18, 25, Nov. 1, 15 2007 from 5:15pm-8:15pm (must attend all sessions). 3. Help build the Habitat House 2007

The 2007 house, a 2-story structure, will be built in Gordon Heights for Lorraine Hayes and her children. On Friday, September 14, and Saturday, September 15, 2007 we expect to complete the first floor framing, wallraise ,sheathing and roof trusses.
During the following week, between Sept 20-22, we expect to raise the walls of the second story, as well as complete the second story hurricane strapping and sheathing.
Volunteers are needed for September 14 and 15, 20 or 21, 2007; we currently have a full group committed to September 22.

4. Flying Point 10K Run - September 23, 2007

The second annual Flying Point 10K for Autism Awareness is set for Sunday, September 23 in Water Mill. Last year, the Flying Point 10K raised $15,000 for the Cody Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities.
Starting at beautiful Flying Point Beach in Water Mill, the course weaves through estate-lined streets and ends up back at the beach again for a stunning finish. Following the competitive race is a 50-yard dash for all children.
New to the event for 2007 is a 2K fun walk.

3. Sufi Rock! Salman Ahmad of the famed Pakistani Band Junoon rocks the Wang center!

He sings, shares stories, challenges orthodoxy, and is an activist for Peace and a UNAIDS Ambassador. The documentary film Islamabad Rock City (2001) will also be screened. The film is a look at the rock group Junoon Lahore natives Salman Ahmad (guitarist/songwriter) and Ali Azmat (vocalist), Muslims who follow the Sufi teachings of Islam, and New Yorker Brian O'Connell (bassist), a Christian. Bill Morrissey is one of the acoustic music scene's top performers. This New England - based singer songwriter and guitarist (and published novelist) has been nominated for two Grammy aawards and is at home in the genres of folk and blues. Based on famed Japanese director Akira Kurosawa's last screenplay, Director Kei Kumai delves into the complex class and sexual dynamics of 19th century Japan. In a brothel in a Japanese village where the ruling and common classes mingle, Fusanosuke, a disgraced samurai, seeks refuge from authorities after he injured a more powerful samurai. 4. Introduction to Microsoft Excel

This introductory course demonstrates the power and ease that makes Microsoft Excel the most-widely used spreadsheet application for office and home financial planning. Accountants, office managers, budget managers, even the family financial planner, will benefit from learning the basics of Excel. Topics include: basics of spreadsheet design, entering data, editing, formatting and printing worksheets, and implementing formulae and functions. The course emphasizes hands-on exercises to reinforce lessons.

1. Herpes Vaccine Study

Did you know that 1 out of 4 women have Genital Herpes? and 90% of those who have it, don't know they do! Volunteer women needed.
Confidentiality maintained. If you are a women between the ages of 18-30,you may be eligible to participate in a Clinical Research Study at Stony Brook University Medical Center. A blood test will be done for detection,and if you qualify,you may receive an experimental vaccination which could protect you from Genital Herpes at no cost to you. 2. The SB Heart Failure and Cardiomyopathy Center is seeking volunteers with heart failure to participate in its research studies.

DICE: If you have heart failure, you may be eligible to volunteer for a study that seeks to prove if a simple device that demonstrates heart function, similar to an ECG machine, can be used to predict how healthy you may remain. The study involves s monthly phone call to follow your health and symptoms. Please call the study nurse practitioner through HealthConnect for further information and to volunteer.
