1. The Counseling Process for Supervisors of Research Foundation Employees

This program will provide you, the 1st or 2nd line supervisors and managers, with information regarding the Counseling processes for non-represented Research Foundation employees in the Stony Brook University community. In addition it will provide you with the ability to support the supervisors in your departments who are faced with employee issues requiring counseling. The session includes:
How and when to conduct a counseling session
The difference between a verbal and a written counseling
How to write a counseling memo
How to identify problem situations
Determining when to counsel an employee and when to seek more severe administrative action
The roles of the Supervisor, the Department, and Employee and Labor Relations within the process.

This diversity awareness workshop is designed to allow participants to explore and discuss dimensions of diversity, examine individual approaches to managing diversity, define important concepts and terms, learn about the impact of stereotyping and bias in the workplace as well to build skills to more effectively work with colleagues and students. Each participant will also develop a personal action plan.

This workshop will provide supervisors with the following information: the necessary information and resources about Federal and State regulations, University policies and legal issues and concerns around issues of discrimination, equal employment opportunity, diversity and complaint resolution. Clarify and communicate the roles, rights and responsibilities of supervisors, managers, employees and the office of Diversity and Affirmative Action with regard to discrimination prevention. Review of appropriate methods for making referrals and explain concerns about confidentiality and the policy against retaliation.

2. Science And Research Awareness Series (SARAS)

If you answered "YES" to any one of the above questions try to answer the next three.

"What are the different careers and fields in Biomedical Sciences?"
"How can I plan for my future in the field of Biomedical Sciences?"
If you dont have definitive answers to the above statements, participate in "Science and Research Awareness Series" (SARAS) being organized by the Department of Anesthesiology at Stony Brook Medical Center in the summer (July) of 2007.
This program consists of lectures, experts views, video workshops and hands-on-workshops. Though this program is designed for high school and undergraduate students, it is open for everyone who is interested in Biomedical Sciences.

3. Mechanical Engineering/CEAS Distinguished Lecture Series Dr. Ares J. Rosakis of California Institute of Technology

Dr. Ares J. Rosakis, the Theodore von Krmn Professor of Aeronautics and Professor of Mechanical Engineering; Director, Graduate Aeronautical Laboratories (GALCIT)at California Institute of Technology will present a Mechanical Engineering Distinguished Lecture entitled: Laboratory Earthquakes. The lecture will be at 11:00AM on Friday, January 26th in room 301 of the Engineering Building. Seminar coordinator is SUNY Distinguished Professor and Chair, Dr. Fu-pen Chiang. 1. Stony Brook Athletics presents "National Girls and Women in Sports Day"

In celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, Stony Brook University Athletics will be offering a multi-sport youth sports event for young girls and boys ages 6-11 prior to a women's basketball game on January 27. For only $5, participants will have the opportunity to interact with current Stony Brook student-athletes. The student-athletes will lead drills and games in the sports of football, volleyball, soccer, basketball and track & field. It promises to be a fun-filled day. Be sure to mark your calendar. All participants in the event will get a ticket to the women's basketball game vs. Albany at 2:00pm as well as an event gift bag.

2. Singer-songwriter Ellis Paul to perform at The University Cafe, Sunday, January 21st 2 PM in the Sunday Acoustic Concert Series

Ellis Paul, one of the top singer-songwriters on today's Acoustic Music Scene, returns to the University Cafe on Sunday, January 21st at 2 P.M. Opening for Ellis is Antje Duvekot, a rising star on the music scene who has just won a Boston New Folk Award.
Ellis Paul is unique in that while he writes contemporary-based songs, he is also true to the spirit of Woody Guthrie and has set Guthrie's words to music in a song called "God's Promise."
Admission is $25.00 general and $20.00 for Stony Brook Faculty/Staff/Students. Reservations are strongly suggested since the show is approaching a sell-out.

Dreamweaver is the industry-standard website development software, supporting sophisticated functions such as JavaScript, Dynamic HTML, and CSS. This course will cover topics such as basic page creation, layout tables, frames v. no frames, how to edit HTML, internal FTP capabilities, templates, and how to manage workflow.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Windows or the basic computing skills as described to our self-test.
