2. Commemoration of September 11 on Tuesday, September 11, 2007 at the Memorial Arch, 12:00 p.m.

The September 11th Commemoration ceremony will begin at 12 noon at the Memorial Arch (in front of Humanities). This will be followed by a silent procession to the Memorial Grove at the Student Activities Center circle. Rain Location: SAC Auditorium. Van transportation will be available at the Hospital main entrance for the east campus community. Access to the Administration Garage is available to East Campus cardholders. Please observe a moment of silence during all campus activities at 8:46 a.m. The Interfaith Center Chapel and Hospital Chapel will be open all day on September 11, 2007, for those seeking a quiet place for prayer, meditation, and reflection. 7. Latin American & Caribbean Studies Center Seminar: Bolivia Today: Indigenous Movements and Popular Sovereignties

Bolivia has undergone profound changes from the time of the Water War of 2000 in Cochabamba. Indigenous, trade-union, and grassroots social movements have spearheaded this process and set the agenda for national transformation. At the center of debate are the issues of ending "internal colonialism" and establishing collective popular sovereignty over resources such as energy, water, coca and territory.
Join Oscar Olivera (leader of Cochabamba’s Coordinadora del Agua) and Pablo Mamani (Aymara Sociologist from El Alto) discuss issues of current political, economic and cultural struggles in Bolivia. Introduction by Prof. Brooke Larson, Department of History.

9. The 4th Annual Stony Brook Human Evolution Symposium: Tracking the Earliest Bipeds: Diversity in Australopithecus. Tuesday, September 25, 2007.

Convened by Richard Leakey, the 4th Annual Human Evolution Symposium is a full-day event featuring many of the foremost scholars in the field. What is Australopithecus? First discovered in South Africa in 1925, this early hominid genus is now known from five different species and also has been found in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Chad. This year’s symposium will explore the diversity in this most successful early hominid.

10. September 12Asia in the 21st Century : A Resurgence, Japan, China, India, South East Asia, and Their Relations

Ambassador Aftab Seth, a fluent Japanese speaker, author of a number of books, including one notably in Japanese, is a specialist in Japanese affairs who served as a career diplomat for nearly four decades before taking up his current position as Director of the prestigeous Global Studies Institute at Keio University. A Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, he anchored his own TV show for many years in India and has served with distinction in different capacities in the Middle East, Europe, and South East Asia besides being a spokesperson for India's foreign office for a number of years. The title of his thought-provoking address will address issues that are engaging the attention of international relations scholars worldwide as Asia emerges the new powerhouse on the world scene. 3. Literacy volunteer tutors needed!

Tutor Volunteers Needed! The Stony Brook Adult Literacy Center is seeking volunteers to help adults learn to read, write, and/or speak English. Tutors meet with their learners two to three hours a week on campus or the Health Sciences Center. All you need is a high school diploma and a desire to help others. All tutors must attend a Tutor Training workshop which takes place on-site. We are now accepting registrations for our Fall Workshop. The workshop schedule is as follows: September 20, Oct. 4, 11, 18, 25, Nov. 1, 15 2007 from 5:15pm-8:15pm (must attend all sessions). 7. Help build the Habitat House 2007

The 2007 house, a 2-story structure, will be built in Gordon Heights for Lorraine Hayes and her children. On Friday, September 14, and Saturday, September 15, 2007 we expect to complete the first floor framing, wallraise ,sheathing and roof trusses.
During the following week, between Sept 20-22, we expect to raise the walls of the second story, as well as complete the second story hurricane strapping and sheathing.
Volunteers are needed for September 14 and 15, 20 or 21, 2007; we currently have a full group committed to September 22.

It is a portrait of the people and towns that make up the Los Yungas region, which is the oldest known coca growing region in the world. 6. Devon Sproule, eclectic singer-songwriter, to perform at The University Cafe on Sunday, October 7th at 2 P.M.

A fast rising star on the acoustic music scene, twenty-five year old Devon Sproule, brings her eclectic songs and engaging performance style to Stony Brook on Sunday, October 7th for a 2 P.M. show at The University Cafe, in a series co-sponsored by WUSB-FM.
With a voice reminiscent of Maria Muldaur and Victoria Williams, Sproule combines Appalachian, folk and jazz influences and has receive praise from Dave Matthews, Mary Chapin Carpenter, NPR, and Rolling Stone.
Opening is Hope Nunnery whose style has been described as "Son House meets The Carter Family."

7. Sufi Rock! Salman Ahmad of the famed Pakistani Band Junoon rocks the Wang center!

He sings, shares stories, challenges orthodoxy, and is an activist for Peace and a UNAIDS Ambassador. The documentary film Islamabad Rock City (2001) will also be screened. The film is a look at the rock group Junoon Lahore natives Salman Ahmad (guitarist/songwriter) and Ali Azmat (vocalist), Muslims who follow the Sufi teachings of Islam, and New Yorker Brian O'Connell (bassist), a Christian. 5. Senior Citizen Law Day October 6th - Free educational seminars designed to assist families in senior life planning.

Senior Citizen Law Day is a community event that offers free educational seminars on topics related to senior life planning. Senior Citizen Law Day will be held on Saturday, October 6th, at Stony Brook University’s Student Activities Center from 9 AM to 3 PM.
Through the generous support from Moloney Family Funeral Homes, Harbor Village at Mt. Sinai, Senior Funding Group, Prudential Douglas Elliman Real Estate, and Citibank / SmithBarney of Lake Grove, this event will be open to the public - free of charge.
Elder law attorneys, finance and healthcare professionals will provide objective information sessions on important topics such as community resources available for seniors, Medicare Part D, identity theft, community Medicaid, wills & trusts, estate planning, selecting a nursing home, reverse mortgages, pre-need funeral arrangements, advance directives and more.
