Beginning November 1, 2007, in accordance with SUNY Regulations, a new schedule of parking fines will be in effect on campus. The goal of the increase is to ensure compliance, thereby improving traffic flow and making more space available for legal permit holders.

The Department of Healthcare Epidemiology announces the celebration of International Infection Control Week. This year's theme is: "Infection Prevention--it's in your hands". 1. Naam Yoga Class - Tuesday, October 16, 2007 at 12:15 pm in the Sports Complex Dance Studio
A style that merges the esoteric traditions of the East found in Kundalini Yoga and of the West found in Universal Kabbalah.
Naam Yoga classes involve extensive use of breathing techniques, yogic postures, movement, and meditation through sound.
This class is free for all Stony Brook University students, staff and faculty with valid Stony Brook ID. Sponsored by the Department of Campus Recreation.

This training will provide you with a step-by-step explanation of what the employer must do in order to meet legal and procedural responsibilities associated with the Form I-9. We will focus on how to correct common mistakes and omissions that delay the hiring process, and will provide answers to frequently asked questions regarding documentation.
Target Audience: VP Coordinators, Departmental Personnel Administrators and anyone who is responsible for completing a Form I-9.

3. Children with Cancer Go Back to School Conference
On Tuesday, November 6, the Department of Pediatric Oncology presents the Children with Cancer Go Back to School Conference at the Wang Center. This is a FREE, one-day conference for health care professionals and educators to educate participants regarding childhood cancer, effects of treatment, preparation for school re-entry, emerging technology and innovative distance learning for students with cancer.
Our special guest speaker will be, Yankees own, Ray Negron. Ray is the author of the children's book The Boy of Steel: A Baseball Dream Come True. When Ray was a teenager, he was caught spraying graffiti on the side of Yankee Stadium, and was put to work by Yankees owner George Steinbrenner. Negron became a Yankee batboy, played minor league ball, and then went to work for the Yankees and the Cleveland Indians. He is now a special adviser to Steinbrenner.

9. A Conversation with Emmy Award Winning Producer, Designer & Artist
Robert Markell
Robert Markell is an 4-time Emmy Award winning producer, designer, network executive and artist whose career spans over 40 years. His unique perspective on the changing environment in film, television and theatre industries will be among the topics of conversation in this special event sponsored by the Department of Theatre Arts.
Markell was producer and art director on dozens of well known TV shows and movies including Defenders, NYPD, Playhouse 90 and 12 Angry Men starring Henry Fonda.

10. Ruthanne Lum McCunn & the God of Luck: The Perils & Rewards of Using Historical Fiction in the Classroom
Ruthanne Lum McCunn was born in San Francisco's Chinatown and raised and educated in Hong Kong. As a young child, Ruthanne recalls being left out because of her mixed ethnic background (Chinese and Scottish). This isolation produced an award-winning author of children's books and novels with a multicultural vision. McCunn's novel Thousand Pieces of Gold was adapted into a feature film and her picture book Pie-Biter was published in English, Chinese, and Spanish. Ruthanne holds life credentials for teaching K-12, and she has worked as an elementary school librarian and taught K through graduate school. Ruthanne now writes full time and frequently returns to the classroom to talk with students and teachers.

1. Hip and Knee Pain Seminar
Seminar will include diagrams of the hip and knee with discussion of their normal anatomy, what can go wrong in either joint such as tendonitis, bursitis, synovitis, meniscal tears and osteoarthritis. Signs and symptoms of a problem, how to get a good diagnosis e.g., how to give a good history, x-rays with examples and the physical exam and what it tells us. Treatments for various problems are discussed including, diet, nutrition, exercise, medication, arthroscopy and hip and knee replacement surgery. There is also a question and answer period.

2. Paintings by Philip Pearlstein at University Art Gallery
"Philip Pearlstein: Paintings and Watercolors 1990-2007" will be on exhibit at the University Art Gallery in the Staller Center from October 16 through December 8, 2007. Pearlstein depicts his nude models in unusual positions alongside highly diverse objects and patterned textiles to create complex, colorful compositions of startling originality. Pearlstein, whose work is in the permanent collections of 64 U.S. museums, is world-renowned as the master of realism for his generation. An artist's reception will be held on Saturday, October 27 from 7-9pm. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, noon to 4pm, and Saturday, 7-9pm. Admission to the exhibition and reception is free.

3. Film: Abduction The Megumi Yokota Story
The remarkable story of a thirty-year search for Megumi Yokota, a 13 year old Japanese girl who was kidnapped by North Korean spies in 1977 while coming home from school. Director Jane Campion chronicles the twists and turns faced by an ordinary banker and housewife as they search for their long-lost daughter in an internationally hostile political climate. More intimately, the film follows the extraordinary journey of Megumi's parents, as their search for a missing daughter thrusts them into the center of a volatile international conflict. Co-sponsored with the Greater Port Jefferson Northern Brookhaven Arts Council. (In Japanese & Korean with English subtitles).

5. Legendary Folk Duo Aztec Two-Step at The University Cafe, Sunday, October 21st, 2 P.M.
Aztec Two-Step, the folk duo of Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman, are now celebrating their thirty-sixth year of performing together, and bring their songs and electric stage personalities to the University Cafe on October 21st at 2PM in a special "Homecoming Weekend" concert.
This is also a Stony Brook homecoming for Aztec Two-Step who are long-time favorites and have appeared at Stony Brook University several times during the seventies and the eighties. Their Stony Brook show will highlight their original songs as well as include the duo's recent venture into the "Simon and Garfunkel" songbook.

8. Opening This Week! The Department of Theatre Arts 2007 Long Island Play Project: The Trestle At Pope Lick Creek
Set in a dead end town somewhere in the United States in 1936, The Trestle at Pope Lick Creek explores the lives of two teenagers who "dare" to transform themselves. Director Valeri Lantz-Gefroh and the talented Stony Brook cast explore the fine distinction between life-affirming subversion and self destruction in this evocative production playing October 18-28, Thursday through Saturday at 8pm and Sunday at 2 pm in Theatre Two at the Staller Center for the Arts. 9. Multidisciplinary Panel Discussion
In conjunction with the "Our Way, Contemporary Aboriginal Art from Lockhart River" exhibition, a multidisciplinary panel discussion will be held on Tuesday, October 16, 4pm in the Wang Center, Lecture Hall 1, to discuss the influence of historical, geo-political, and anthropological relationships between Australia and Asia,. Moderated by Professor Kamal Sridhar (Director, Stony Brook India Studies Center), panelists will include Dr. Sally Butler (lecturer in Art History at The University of Queensland, and "Our Way" curator), Dr. David Hicks (professor of Anthropology at Stony Brook University), and Mr.Benjamin Gennochio (Art Critic for the New York Times).
The discussion is intended for the entire campus community, with special relevance to students in the Departments of Art, Anthropology, and Asian and Asian American studies.

1. Defensive Driving Program Offered for UUP employees and their immediate family members.
A NYSUT sponsored Defensive Driving program is being offered on Monday, November 5 and Thursday, November 8 in the Wang Center Room 201, for all UUP employees and their immediate family members. Attendance at both classes is required. Cost is $25 per person. Checks should be made payable to "NYSUT Benefit Trust" and delivered to the UUP office, 104 Old Chemistry, Z=3475. Office hours are Monday thru Friday, 9 am to 3 pm. Receipt of your check reserves your place in class. Participants are usually entitled to a 10% discount on their automotive insurance. 1. Memorial Service for Makoto Oda
A memorial service for Makoto Oda will be held on Monday, October 15, 2007 in the Javits room on the second floor of the Frank Melville Jr. Memorial Library, State University of New York at Stony Brook from 3:00 to 4:30. Makoto Oda, a famous Japanese novelist, was a visiting professor at Stony Brook from 1992-1994 and taught literature courses in the Japanese Studies Program, supported by the Japan Foundation. On the world stage, he was known for his peace activism, which began during the Vietnam era. He last visited Stony Brook in April 2003, when he gave a lecture on the war in Iraq.
