5. Principal Investigator Award Interface (PIAI) Training Session

For Projector Directors who are new to The Research Foundation’s Business System, or staff who’d like a better understanding of the Principal Investigator Award Interface (PIAI), the Office of Grants Management is offering a 90-minute training session. The PIAI application is considered to be a superior and more user friendly information interface for inquiry only access, while Oracle is viewed primarily as a transaction processing system for the administrative departments that handle your financial transactions.
This session will be held on Friday, April 18th in the OVPR Conference Room, W5510 Frank Melville Library from 9:00-10:30 a.m.

1. Provost's Lecture Series hosting Paul Forman on April 14 and Hans-Peter Plag on April 18, 2008.

The Provost's Lecture Series is hosting 2 talks the week of April 14. On Monday, April 14, Paul Forman, curator of the Division of Medicine and Science at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History, will give his talk at 4:30 p.m. in the Humanities Building, Room 1006. This lecture is held in conjunction with the Templeton Research Lecture Series. Our second lecture will host Earthstock keynote speaker, Hans-Peter Plag, Research Professor, University of Nevada, Reno. His lecture will be held on Friday evening, April 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the Wang Center Theater.

7. EarthStock 2008: Stony Brook Nobel Laureates Speak Out

Nobel Laureates Speak Out: Behind the Workings of the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change
Four Stony Brook University Professors served on the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that was awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize along with Al Gore. Professors Robert Cess, Edmund Chang, Minghua Zhang, and Marv Geller, from the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS), will discuss their research and experience serving on this panel, led by School of Journalism Dean Howad Schneider. "Italy Today: Facing the Challenges of the New Millennium" featuring author and Stony Brook Distinguished Service Professor, Mario B. Mignone.
"Italy Today" is a concise narrative of the nation's stunning transformation from the ashes of World War II to the leading economic and cultural power it is today. This book provides insights into the dynamics of Italy's progression from the Second World War, through the anthropologically revolutionary 1970s and '80s, and into the complexities of a post industrial nation. We need help with setting up and breaking down tables, booths, equipment, etc., and for miscellaneous tasks throughout the day. Shifts are two hours long, starting at 8:00 am and ending at 5:00 pm.

6. The 15th Annual Child Care Cash Bonanza Win $15,000

Stony Brook Child Care will hold it's 15th annual Child Care Cash Bonanza on Thursday, May 1st, 2008 at the Student Activity Center. Tickets are $50.00 each and they may be purchased at the child care center or at the Bursar's Office. A ticket admits two adults for an International coffee, tea and dessert extravaganza. 7. Department of Campus Recreation Annual Golf Tournament

The Department of Campus Recreation will be holding its' Annual Golf Tournament on Friday, May 2nd @ 12:00pm at the Heatherwood Golf Club in Centereach. Tournament begins at 12:00pm with a shotgun start. The tournament format is best ball, with team low gross, longest drive and closest to pin awards given out. It is open to all students, faculty, staff and alumni of the University. Each foursome will be allowed one guest player who is not affiliated with the university. Cost, which includes shotgun start, green fees, cart and lunch, is $68.00 per person for faculty/staff/graduate student/alumni/guest and $50.00 per person for undergraduate students.
The registration deadline is Monday, April 21, 2008.

13. Sonic Residues Exhibition And Concert At Stony Brook University, April 29Th To May 12Th, 2008

The Sonic Residues Festival will be concerned with residual sound as a medium of artistic expression encompassing performance, sculpture, phonography, experimental notation, and installation. Our festival will synergistically combine a concert performance, a gallery exhibit, a series of portable media works, and provocative lectures as mediums of access to sonic residues. The Sonic Residues Exhibition will take place in the Student Activities Center Art Gallery at Stony Brook University from April 29th to May 12th, 2008. The Sonic Residues Concert will take place in the Wang Center Theatre at Stony Brook University on May 12 at 7:30. 14. Stony Brook Opera to present Chekhov double bill

On Friday, April 25, 2008 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, April 27 at 2 p.m. Stony Brook Opera will present its final production for the season on the Main Stage of the Staller Center for the Arts. This will be a full production of two one-act operas based on Chekhov, by two of America's foremost living opera composers: Dominick Argento's comic opera The Boor, and Lee Hoiby's tragedy The Scarf. Timothy Long will conduct the cast and the Stony Brook Symphony Orchestra, and Jennifer Griesbach is the stage director, with sets and lighting designed by Maruti Evans, and costumes by Sidney Shannon. There is a free pre-opera lecture in the Recital Hall one hour before each performance. 15. April 22 - Stony Brook Teams With Cody Center & Lacrosse Unlimited To Host Lacrosse forAutism Night

The Stony Brook men's and women's lacrosse team will host local rival Hofstra on April 22.
The games will have even more meaning this year as the Stony Brook Athletics Department has announced that the event will also be the inaugural Suffolk County Lacrosse for Autism night. Stony Brook Athletics will team with Lacrosse Unlimited, Inc. and the Cody Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities for the event that will donate a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales to the Cody Center. Everything will begin with the women taking the field beginning at 4:00 p.m. followed by the men at 7:00 p.m. with both games taking place in LaValle Stadium. 2. Geriatric Care Management Education and Training Workshops

The Schools of Social Welfare and Nursing at Stony Brook University are sponsoring four Geriatric Care Management Education and Training Workshops at the Long Island State Veterans Home at Stony Brook University from May 5th through 8th, 2008. The workshop titles are: (1) New Profile of Aging (2) Elder Law, Ethics, Finance and Housing (3) Family Relationships and Changing Care Needs (4) Health & Wellness. These workshops are designed for social workers, nurses, attorneys, paralegals, health professionals, senior advocates and those who work with older adults in government agencies.
The tuition for each individual workshop is $100. However, those who participate in all four workshops receive a $100 discount ($300 for all four workshops) and will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement in Geriatric Care Management.

A NYSUT sponsored Defensive Driving program is being offered on Saturday, May 10, 2008 from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM in the Wang Center Room 201, for all UUP employees and their immediate family members.
