2. 2008 IRS Mileage Rate

The IRS has announced a new rate for personal car mileage. Beginning January 1, 2008, the standard mileage rate of a car (including vans, pickups or panel trucks) is 50.5 cents per mile for business travel. This standard rate for business miles is based on the costs of operating a vehicle such as maintenance and repairs, tires, gasoline, oil, insurance, license and registration fees and depreciation or (leased payments). The new rate applies to State, Research Foundation and Stony Brook Foundation travel.

The Graduate Council Fellowship & Awards Committee will be accepting nominations through Monday, February 25, 2008, for the following awards, presented annually at the Graduate Awards Ceremony held during Commencement week (May 2008): President's Award to Distinguished Doctoral Students; President's Award for Excellence in Teaching by a Doctoral Student; Weisinger Dissertation Award; Fusco Fellowship; Faculty-Staff Dissertation Award; Dean’s Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching or Mentoring; Dean’s Award for Excellence as a Graduate Director or Coordinator. 5. Libraries Increase Online Journal Holdings

More than 700 online journals have been added to the Libraries’ collections as a result of new contracts with Cambridge University Press and Wiley Interscience. These contracts more than double the journals available to us from these publishers. 2. Chemical Inventory Training: How to Respond to the EH&S Chemical Security Survey - 1/9 (Chem Bldg) & 1/15 (HSC)

Do you know about the new federal regulation that requires all chemical users to inventory designated chemicals?
Do you know about the database that was developed for departments to report their inventory to EH&S? Do you know how to access the database?
Do you have questions on how to complete the chemical inventory?
Are you sure of what needs to be counted?
Do you realize that all labs and chemical storage areas must complete the survey even though you may not have any of the chemicals on the list?
EH&S will conduct a training session to answer these and other questions that you may have.
Dates: Wed. 1/9/08 in Chemistry Rm 412, 2PM - 2:30PM or Tues. 1/15/08 in HSC Lecture Hall 5, 11:30AM - 12PM
All labs or departments are encouraged to send at least 1 person to either training session.

2. Hip and knee pain seminar

Seminar will include diagrams of the hip and knee with discussion of their normal anatomy, what can go wrong in either joint such as tendonitis, bursitis, synovitis, meniscal tears and osteoarthritis. Signs and symptoms of a problem, how to get a good diagnosis e.g., how to give a good history, x-rays with examples and the physical exam and what it tells us. Treatments for various problems are discussed including, diet, nutrition, exercise, medication, arthroscopy and hip and knee replacement surgery. There is also a question and answer period.

1. Sweet Dreams - An Evening of Chocolate Indulgence to benefit the Cody Center

Join us for the 5th year of Sweet Dreams on Monday, January 28, 2008 at 6:00 PM. Watermill Caterers of Smithtown will once again host an evening filled with cocktails, poured champagne, caviar samplings, passed hors’doeuvres, and an exquisite buffet of carving stations. After the reception, guests will experience the delectable "Fairy Tale" chocolate displays, each prepared by top Long Island restaurants and pastry chefs. Ballot boxes let you to vote for your favorite creation. Each display features tasting samples which can also be piled into a box to go available for only $20.

2. Winter Softball Clinic - January 27, 2008

Pitching (9:00am- 12:00) and Hitting (1:00-3:00pm)clinics will be offered by the Stony Brook Softball Staff again this winter! Cost of attendance is $80.00 per clinic or $140.00 for both sessions. 3. Defensive Driving Program Offered for UUP employees and their immediate family members.

A NYSUT sponsored Defensive Driving program is being offered on Saturday, January 19, 2008 from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM in the Wang Center Room 201, for all UUP employees and their immediate family members.
Cost is $25 per person. Checks should be made payable to "NYSUT Benefit Trust" and delivered to the UUP office, 104 Old Chemistry, Z=3475. Office hours are Monday thru Friday, 9 am to 3 pm. Receipt of your check reserves your place in class.
Participants are usually entitled to a 10% discount on their automotive insurance. Check with your provider. The certificate is good for three years of savings!

6. Study of HIV+/AIDS and ChromiumPicolinate

The General Clinical Research Center at Stony Brook University Hospital is seeking volunteers 18 years of age and older with a diagnosis of HIV+ or AIDS to research the effectiveness of Chromium Picolinate in the treatment of complications of current HIV therapy including insulin resistance, (leading to Diabetes) and possibly body fat distribution (HIV Lipodystrophy). Volunteers are offered compensation up to $2,050 plus transportation expenses.

7. How well do Your Lungs Work?

We are studying both overweight and normal weight participants. Are you a never smoker?
If you have no known lung problems, the Division of Pulmonary Medicine at Stony Brook Hospital would like to invite you to consider entering an investigational study of aerosol deposition. The research project is being performed to investigate the pattern of particle deposition in the lungs of patients who are overweight and comparing to the pattern in normal weight people. We now offer Camp Academies for children entering Kindergarten though grade 11 in the Fall 2008. Our special Camp Academies are designed to satisfy our campers with an interest in Art, Chess, Chess/Medical, Computers, GBA - Video Game Builders, Athletic/Medical, Acting, Sciences and Reading. These programs will run for one-week intervals during the summer. The camper will receive instructional activities relating to his or her chosen topic. A hot lunch and snack will also be provided.
