1. Time to renew library material

Faculty, Management Confidential, Emeritus and Professional staff who currently have borrowed library material due May 20, 2007, from the Main, Music and/or the Science/Engineering Library, are urged to renew at this time. The new due date will be December 23, 2008. Items already renewed 3 times, must be returned and may then be checked out again.
For information on how to renew online via STARS/OPAC, please go to the URL.
To renew in person, please present your ID card to service desk staff. It is not necessary to bring the material into the library in order to have them renewed. Overdue material can not be renewed. There are no phone renewals. Thank you.

1. Lawson Hospital Training for April and May

Lawson Requisition Training Classes will be held on a weekly basis, to see available dates please click on the calendar link: http://uhmc-iweb1.uhmc.sunysb.edu/lawsonsupport/index_files/Page909.htm.
All classes will be held in the Lawson Training Room #797, Level One, right next to the Blue Elevators. To schedule for any of these classes please contact Michele Thomas, Lawson Support Specialist, Ext. 4-7805. There will be 2 parts covered in these classes, the first half will cover ordering from any of the Storerooms in the Hospital and the second half will cover ordering from an outside Vendor. I suggest that all new hospital employees and/or if you are interested in taking a refresher course, please contact us to attend one of these classes.

2. RefWorks: Buy, Sell or Hold?

Please join the West Campus librarians for an exploration and discussion of RefWorks, the web-based citation management tool currently on trial through the library. This is not an instruction or presentation; the library is providing a space for the university community to get together and help us evaluate the usefulness of the tool. Classroom A in the Melville Library will be open for an hour on the following dates for those who would like to investigate what the tool has to offer and share their thoughts.

The Provost's Lecture Series is hosting 2 talks the week of April 28. On Monday, April 28, Martin Marty, the Fairfax M. Cone Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Chicago Divinity School, will give his talk at 4:30 p.m. in the Humanities Building, Room 1006. Our second lecture will host Michael Grodin, Professor of Health Law, Bioethics and Human Rights,at Boston University. Dr. Grodin's lecture will be held on Wednesday, April 30, at 4:00 p.m. in Room 145 of the Engineering Building.

11. James Johnson Sweeney conference at Stony Brook Manhattan, April 25.

The annual Pollock-Krasner / Stony Brook conference, "The Poetry of Vision: James Johnson Sweeney and the Twilight of Modernism," will be held on Friday, April 25 at Stony Brook Manhattan.
Organized by Ciaran Bennett, a Dublin-based art critic and the 2007 Pollock-Krasner / Stony Brook Research Fellow, the conference will address Sweeney's influential career as a museum director, curator and critic in the United States and Ireland. The speakers are Ciaran Bennett, Brenda Moore-McCann, Maureen E. Mulvihill, Raymund Ryan, Lorraine A. Stuart, and Karole P.B. Vail.

14. The Gender Illiminati: Facing and Overcoming Post-Stonewall Roadblocks to LGBTI Liberation, April 23, 6:30PM, Old Chem. 118

Will discuss hard-hitting issues which have been often ignored and sometimes actually covered up. These will include but not be limited to: religious/political extremism against LGBTI people, government-sponsored and conducted discrimination, psychiatric pathologization of trans/intersex/LGB people, the medicalization of transgender and intersex, nonconsensual medical interventions on intersex children, medical infiltration of the intersex movement by eugenicists and gender-based violence. Will then talk about where to go from knowing about such issues. This will include discussing options people can do in way of solutions. And since the personal is political there will be the oppurtunity to share personal stories of experiences as activists on these issues.

The Clinical Laboratory Sciences Department of Stony Brook University is hosting the 1st annual Lab Expo on May 2, 2008 from 11 AM to 4PM in the Wang Center Theater Lobby. 1. Hip and Knee Pain Seminar

Seminar will include diagrams of the hip and knee with discussion of their normal anatomy, what can go wrong in either joint such as tendonitis, bursitis, synovitis, meniscal tears and osteoarthritis. Signs and symptoms of a problem, how to get a good diagnosis e.g., how to give a good history, x-rays with examples and the physical exam and what it tells us. Treatments for various problems are discussed including, diet, nutrition, exercise, medication, arthroscopy and hip and knee replacement surgery. There is also a question and answer period.

4. Meals2Heal - Show Your Support for Children in Madgascar

The Madagascar Ankizy Fund (MAF) and the Graduate Program of Public Health invite you to skip an unhealthy snack/meal to improve your health while helping children affected by dental problems in remote areas of Madagascar. The Meal2Heal Fundraiser asks that you donate the amount equivalent to the price of the snack/meal skipped to the MAF Smile a Day Oral Health Education Program.
Donations can be dropped off until Friday, May 9th in participating departments campus-wide, or continuously by check or credit card. For a list of participating departments, visit the fundraiser website: www.meals2heal.webs.com.

4. Who is Asia America? A Series of Performance Art Happenings

5. Stony Brook Opera to present Chekhov double bill

On Friday, April 25, 2008 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, April 27 at 2 p.m. Stony Brook Opera will present its final production for the season on the Main Stage of the Staller Center for the Arts. This will be a full production of two one-act operas based on Chekhov, by two of America's foremost living opera composers: Dominick Argento's comic opera The Boor, and Lee Hoiby's tragedy The Scarf. Timothy Long will conduct the cast and the Stony Brook Symphony Orchestra, and Jennifer Griesbach is the stage director, with sets and lighting designed by Maruti Evans, and costumes by Sidney Shannon. There is a free pre-opera lecture in the Recital Hall one hour before each performance. 6. Contemporary Asian Architecture & the Wang Center: Tribute for Wang's Architect PH Tuan

P.H. Tuan, the internationally esteemed architect of the Wang Center and advocate of contemporary Chinese architecture, comes to the Charles B. Wang Center to celebrate the Wang Center's fifth year anniversary. He reveals the aesthetic vision that inspired the Wang Center, the Kenneth Wang Law School of Soochow University in Suzhou, China, which he also designed, and his experiences as an immigrant in a conversation with Bill Zimmerman. 8. "The Shape of Water" Film Screening, April 23, 12:50-2:10, Old Chem. 118

The Shape of Water tells the stories of powerful, imaginative and visionary women confronting the destructive development of the Third World with new cultures and a passion for change. The film takes us to Senegal, Israel/Palestine, Brazil, and India, tracing the vital efforts of women who are pioneering social justice, by protecting the rainforest, preserving biodiversity, promoting peace, and fighting against female genital cutting.

1. Geriatric Care Management Education and Training Workshops

The Schools of Social Welfare and Nursing at Stony Brook University are sponsoring four Geriatric Care Management Education and Training Workshops at the Long Island State Veterans Home at Stony Brook University from May 5th through 8th, 2008. The workshop titles are: (1) New Profile of Aging (2) Elder Law, Ethics, Finance and Housing (3) Family Relationships and Changing Care Needs (4) Health & Wellness. These workshops are designed for social workers, nurses, attorneys, paralegals, health professionals, senior advocates and those who work with older adults in government agencies.
The tuition for each individual workshop is $100. However, those who participate in all four workshops receive a $100 discount ($300 for all four workshops) and will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement in Geriatric Care Management.

2. Defensive Driving Program Offered for UUP employees and their immediate family members.

A NYSUT sponsored Defensive Driving program is being offered on Saturday, May 10, 2008 from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM in the Wang Center Room 201, for all UUP employees and their immediate family members.

3. The Chautauqua 2008 Short Courses for College and University Faculty

After many years of support by the National Science Foundation, Professional Education Program-Outreach will continue its several years commitment to the Chautauqua Short Courses. This nation-wide faculty development program in natural sciences, social sciences, engineering, and mathematics will offer eight courses. Five courses will be held at Stony Brook’s mid-town Manhattan site- Science & Art (6/5-6/7), Globalization and the Impact of Worldwide Poverty and Inequality(6/12-6/14), Science and Social Justice (6/9-6/11), Using Case Studies to Teach Science--A Workshop (6/19-6/21), Agent Orange: Abandoned Values and "A Kind of Chemical Warfare(6/26-6/28), one in Washington D.C.-Women and Minorities in the Sciences: How Faculty Can Make a Difference (6/5 -6/7) , and one in Beijing -China Confronts New Security Issues (6/9-6/13). We are studying both overweight and normal weight participants. Are you a never smoker?
If you have no known lung problems, the Division of Pulmonary Medicine at Stony Brook Hospital would like to invite you to consider entering an investigational study of aerosol deposition. The research project is being performed to investigate the pattern of particle deposition in the lungs of patients who are overweight and comparing to the pattern in normal weight people. 4. Study of HIV+/AIDS and Chromium Picolinate

The General Clinical Research Center at Stony Brook University Hospital is seeking volunteers 18 years of age and older with a diagnosis of HIV+ or AIDS to research the effectiveness of Chromium Picolinate in the treatment of complications of current HIV therapy including insulin resistance, (leading to Diabetes) and possibly body fat distribution (HIV Lipodystrophy). Thursday, April 24 from 9:30am - 6:00pm a Free Oral Cancer Screening will be held at the School of Dental Medicine on South Campus. The exam is quick and painless. Free goody bags available to the first 50 people who participate. Each year approximately 30,000 Americans are diagnosed with oral cancer and more than 8,000 die of their disease.
