1. New 2009 IRS Mileage Rate
The IRS has released a new rate for personal car mileage. Effective January 1, 2009, the new standard mileage rate is 55 cents per mile for business travel. This standard rate for business miles is based on the costs of operating a vehicle such as maintenance and repairs, tires, gasoline, oil, insurance, license and registration fees and depreciation or (leased payments). The new rate applies to State, Research Foundation and Stony Brook Foundation travel.

The Department of Teaching, Learning + Technology (TLT) (formerly known as Educational Technologies, Instructional Computing, and CELT) at Stony Brook is offering a 2 day event for all teaching faculty (Full time, lecturers & adjuncts) & graduate TA's who are interested in learning about teaching & technology resources Stony Brook has to offer.
Last year, this event not only included workshops regarding TLT resources, but we were fortunate that some librarians, faculty from CAS, CEAS, HSC, and Career center staff offered sessions as well!
We hope to increase participation this year.
This event will take place Wednesday, January 14th, 2009 & Thursday, January 15th, 2009

2. Habitat for Humanity Annual Fund Raising Event Now Underway!
Habitat for Humanity Annual Fund-raiser now underway!
Tickets are now on sale and available through the Office of the Executive Dean;contact either Barbara Adams or Catherine Horgan, HSC level 4, room 225.
The 2008 fundraiser includes amazing prizes such as a fully customizable 5-person hot tub; second prize is 2 round trip economy class airline tickets anywhere in the continental US; third prize is a one night stay for 2 at the East Wind Inn and Spa; and, our fourth prize is restaurant gift certificates worth $100 each to Blackwell's in Wading River and Bliss Restaurant in Setauket.

1. Staller Center Spring 2009 Film Passes on Sale at stallercenter.com
Passes for the Spring Semester Films for Campus and Community are now on sale. Twelve films in the series, starting Friday, January 30th with "The End of America" at 7:00 pm. Naomi Wolf, author of the book "The End of America," will attend the screening with filmmaker Annie Sundberg, to introduce the film and host a Q&A afterwards. The 9:30 pm feature on January 30 is "The Dark Knight," the Batman movie directed by Christopher Nolan, starring Christian Bale and Heath Ledger. 1. Defensive Driving Program for UUP Members
A NYSUT sponsored Defensive Driving program is being offered on Saturday, January 10, 2008 from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM in the Wang Center Room 201, for all UUP employees and their immediate family members. Cost is $30 per person, payable in advance. Checks should be made payable to "NYSUT Benefit Trust" and delivered to the UUP office, 104 Old Chemistry, Z=3475. Office hours are Monday thru Friday, 9 am to 3 pm. Receipt of your check reserves your place in class. Participants are usually entitled to a 10% discount on their automotive insurance. 9. Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices
This course is the standard CCNA preparation course for new CISCO test #640-802. The overall objective of the course is to cover all the topics required by the CCNA test.
The principles of Architecture Layering (OSI's reference Model), Multiplexing and Encapsulation and IP addressing (subnetting) are discussed in detail. TCP/IP, IPX, PPP, ISDN and frame Relay Protocols are covered.
Network Equiptment such as repeaters, bridges, routers, hubs and switches are studied in detail. Interconnecting and configuring networking equipment such as Cisco's 2500 and 2600 series routers, 1900 and 2900 catalysts switches are studied.
We will cover how to design networks using VLANS on the above mentioned equipment; students will perform labs on Real Cisco Networking equipment.

1. Volunteers Wanted For A Research Study of an investigational drug for genital warts.
Do you have Genital Warts?
You may be eligible to join a clinical research study of an investigational drug for genital warts.
Convenient, once-a-day ointment application.
Requirements:
Men and women 18-50 years old.
Must not be pregnant or breastfeeding.
Qualified participants will receive study drug, medical exams and laboratory tests related to the study.
All study related visits and study drug are provided at no cost to eligible participant.

2. Do You Have Heart Failure?
Adults diagnosed with heart failure are invited to participate in a symptom monitoring study. The study is testing an educational method to help patients monitor their heart failure symptoms. If qualified to participate, questionnaires about your medical history, symptoms, self-care, and quality of life will be completed. Participants are followed for one year by telephone (15-20 minute interviews 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after enrollment). All participants will be given a weight scale to keep and a booklet on heart failure self-care. You will be paid $20 at both 6 and 12 months if you complete the telephone interviews. 4. Study Of HIV+/AIDS And Chromium Picolinate
The General Clinical Research Center at Stony Brook University Hospital is seeking volunteers 18 years of age and older with a diagnosis of HIV+ or AIDS to research the effectiveness of Chromium Picolinate in the treatment of complications of current HIV therapy including insulin resistance, (leading to Diabetes) and possibly body fat distribution (HIV Lipodystrophy).
