04. Conferences/Seminars/Lectures
1. The Faculty Director Lectures - All faculty and staff invited.
Wednesday, July 23 from 11am to noon. Charles B. Wang Center, Meeting Room 201.
Creating Learning Communities, by Kim Moorning, Director of Instructional Technology Services and an assistant professor in computer information systems at CUNY.
Learning Communities have existed for decades, but this present age brought changes in teaching models and multimedia tools which dictate the need to collaborate. The higher education challenge is to create solid Faculty Learning Communities (FLC). Student Learning Communities are more concrete because students with similar courses or majors can form a community. Their communal lines are defined. Establishing, developing and sustaining FLCs require individual and continuous buy-in from faculty cohorts. FLCs are based on a dynamic philosophy of knowledge which requires research, assessment and innovative approaches to education stimulated by intellectual dialogue.

Are women and men judged differently when they speak their minds? Do women professionals get punished for asking for what they want? How does a woman successfully ask without provoking hostile responses? What is power? What is perceived power versus actual power and how to leverage it during negotiations? by Mala R. Chinoy, PhD, MBA. Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at 5:00-7:30 pm in the hospital cafeteria dining area. RSVP to: Caroline Lazzaruolo, Office of Faculty Affairs, 638-2005(caroline.lazzaruolo@stonybrook.edu)
